Phillips Watches to Auction the Unique A. Lange & Söhne 1815 ‘Homage To Walter Lange’ in Steel

In early 2017, during the SIHH, Walter Lange, the founder of A. Lange & Söhne and a direct descendant of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, who founded the company on 7 December 1845, sadly passed away. In order to pay tribute to this humble and charming man, the company decided to create a homage watch, just the way he wanted (a watch that Walter Lange always dreamed of, without seeing it being made… until now). Available to the public in the 3 colours of gold, one additional piece has been created, in stainless steel. And this steel A. Lange & Söhne 1815 ‘Homage To Walter Lange’ will be auctioned by Phillips Watches in May 2018.

As with every year it seems, A. Lange & Söhne’s creations are once again the talk of SIHH. Last year, it was the mega Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Merite (read our hands-on review here.) A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Chronograph Now In Pink Gold (SIHH 2018)

A. Lange & Sohne has introduced another iteration of its classic 1815 Chronograph this year at SIHH, now cased in warm 18ct pink gold but still with the same iconic pulsation dial. Considered by many to be the ultimate expression of a purist chronograph, these latest versions will be sure to strike a chord with collectors, who now find themselves literally spoilt for choice. Will it be the distinctive and powerful black dial or the equally elegant yet slightly more understated argenté dial? Perhaps one of each? We can dream.

A. Lange & Söhne Triple Split – The New Mightier Than Mighty Chronograph (SIHH 2018)

Several years ago I had the pleasure of reviewing the A. Lange & Söhne Double Split and called it the über-chrono. To be clear, this has nothing to do with its functions but is entirely due to its spectacularly beautiful movement. Of course, the Double Split is the only mechanical double split-second chronograph, so that certainly demands some respect, but the movement’s architecture and finishing show a breath-taking beauty that no watch lover can ignore. And now there’s a Triple Split! Does that mean that the über-chrono has been surpassed? Yep, it does, and… it’s limited to only 100 pieces!

As 2017 is coming to an end, and before the new horological season starts with the SIHH (as of January 15th, 2018), we thought it was important for you to understand what happened this year in the watchmaking industry. The idea here isn’t to focus on watches, we’ll have another recap article for that. In all fairness, 2017 has been an eventful year. VIDEO – The Timelessness of the A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia collection by Anthony de Haas and Bruno Moinard

A great looking simple dress watch has a certain “je ne sais quoi”. Of course there’s is only so much you can do as a designer, at least that what most laymen think. And also to us there are some very simple 2, or 3-hand watches that are just… perfect. The size, the shape of the case, that small bevel on the lugs, and that lovely straight-brushed case-band, or any other detail that can just hit the right note. But how difficult is it to find that perfect balance when designing something. We set out and asked the experts, Anthony de Haas, A. Lange & Söhne’s director product development, and Bruno Moinard, an acclaimed architect and designer. What is timelessness, and how to translate this, in all subtleness, into a design that will remain appealing for decades, or even centuries. Here’s what they told us about this ‘elusive’ property.

Introducing – A. Lange & Söhne 1815 “Homage to Walter Lange” with Stoppable Jumping Second Limited Editions in 3 Colours of Gold and a Stainless Steel Unique Piece

In January 2017, one of the greatest and humblest men I had the chance to meet in this industry, Mister Walter Lange (1924-2017), founder of A. Lange & Söhne, sadly passed away. In honour of its company founder, the Saxon manufacture is enlarging its 1815 collection, a range of watches rich of heritage for the brand, with the 1815 “Homage to Walter Lange”. Inside this watch is a surprising and unexpected complication, a stoppable jumping seconds hand that dates back to a 150-year-old invention conceived by Ferdinand Adolph Lange. A future collector’s watch for sure.

Buying Guide – 6 Great Annual Calendar Watches From Establishes Manufactures

Calendar watches come in a wide variety. Most of them are based on 31-day cycles and require a regular adjustment (5 times a year) to ensure that the correct date is displayed. An annual calendar automatically adjusts the indicated date, mechanically configured to display the different lengths of the months, and they require to be corrected manually only once a year (in the worst case depending on its mechanism). Typically more accessible than the perpetual calendar (which also takes into account leap years) and infinitely more useful than a standard calendar, the annual calendar offers a lot of bang for the buck.
