SIHH 2017 – 5 Questions To Wilhelm Schmid, CEO of A. Lange & Söhne (VIDEO)

As some might say, show must go on… But how futile and material this would be, the SIHH is about watches and A. Lange & Söhne again has a great, impressive and highly desirable collection of watches, including the Tourbograph Perpetual, the Zeitwerk Decimal Strike and the 1815 Annual Calendar. And who could be better than our good friend Wilhelm Schmid, CEO of A. Lange & Söhne, to explain these SIHH 2017 novelties. Here is our conversation with him.

SIHH 2017 – A. Lange & Söhne Lange 31 White Gold / Grey Dial

When you think power reserve, you thought that the 7-day IWC’s or the 8-day Panerai’s were already massively powerful – and obviously, they have more power than 99% of the mechanical watches produced. Well, if power is your thing and if you simply hate to wind a watch, you might have to consider the Lange 31… and 31 here is nothing about the diameter of the watch, but it is about the length of the power reserve, in days. Yes, this watch can run for 31 days, coming from one single barrel, when fully wound. Impressive, right. This powerful watch comes in a new version for the SIHH 2017, in white gold with a grey dial.

SIHH 2017 – A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Annual Calendar

After the massively impressive (yet far from accessible) A. Lange & Söhne Tourbograph Perpetual introduced yesterday, as the main highlight of the SIHH 2017 collection by the Saxon manufacture, we have to go back to the real world and to more usable and pragmatic watches. Well, sort of, as we talk Lange. As part of the novelties is a highly interesting calendar watch, with what certainly the most relevant option to us, the annual calendar – a complication that sits right in the middle between a normal calendar and a perpetual calendar. Here is the discreet and elegant A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Annual Calendar.

SIHH 2017 – A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Decimal Strike (with a new striking complication)

For the SIHH 2017, A. Lange & Söhne just reveled a new model in the emblematic Zeitwerk collection, and not just a new execution of an existing watch, but a new type of complication. This watch joins 3 other members in the family: the Zeitwerk, the Zetiwerk Striking Time and the Zeitwerk Minute Repeater (the latter two being chiming watches). For this new kid in the collection, A. Lange & Söhne introduces a new type of striking mechanism, the Decimal Strike, which gives echo to the unique display of this watch. Please meet the A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Decimal Strike.

SIHH 2017 – A. Lange & Söhne Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Merite (with tourbi, split-seconds, QP and fusée-and-chain)

Here we go. Monday 16th January 2017, 9am Geneva time. The SIHH 2017 is officially opened. And what could have been better than this A. Lange & Söhne Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Merite to sound the start of the show. In short, this watch is simply mega. If you are into watches for already a few years, you might be aware of the 2005 A. Lange & Söhne Tourbograph Pour le Merite, an impressive watch combining a tourbillon, a split-seconds chronograph and a fusée-and-chain transmission. Add to that a perpetual calendar and you’ll have one of the most impressive watches ever created by the Saxon Manufacture (after the Grande Complication), which is the brand’s highlight for his year. Here is the A. Lange & Söhne Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Merite.

We’re sure you, watch aficionado and collectors, can’t wait, but to make the suspense a bit less difficult, here is an overview of what the SIHH 2016 had best to show.

“What If” – The A. Lange & Söhne Datograph in STEEL

What if… What if I could imagine and create my dream watch, the timepiece I always dreamed of, the watch that does not exist and that I’d love to own one day. Well, if you read Monochrome on a regular basis, you already know that we’re not shy when it comes to making predictions and using Photoshop to imagine potential Rolex watches (don’t worry, we will be doing it again for Baselworld 2017…). Today though we have something a bit different. I’ve been playing around with Photoshop again but not to create a potential Rolex, but rather to imagine my dream watch, a watch that I’m pretty sure will never exist but that haunts my nights. For me, it is the A. Lange & Söhne Datograph, the ultimate chronograph by my standards and a watch that I’ve dreamed about seeing in stainless steel… What if?

The Nine Reviews You Loved Most in 2016 On Monochrome-Watches

Like we always say, Reviews are crucial for us, at Monochrome-Watches – and for two main reasons. First of all, in order to bring you the best possible stories and the most objective opinions, we need to have some proper wrist-time with the watches. It’s no debate here: wearing the watch and experiencing it for a while, as if we were owning it, is mandatory. It is our editorial philosophy. Second, as watch journalist, we believe that our reviews will influence your choices and for that reason, we think that you also need these reviews to make the most informed purchases. This is why, to close 2016, instead of showing you our most read stories, we’d like to show you the nine reviews you loved most this year on Monochrome-Watches (based on page-views and reactions).

A. Lange & Söhne: State of the Art Tradition

When our editor in chief, Frank, asked me if I was interested in photographing seven (yes 7) A. Lange & Söhne watches, I was as happy as a kid in a candy (electronic?) store. I took this opportunity to think about the brand. What differentiates Lange? What makes their watches unique? Why do people pay an enormous amount of money for a simple hand-wound watch? I will share my personal views as well as photos to illustrate my points. In many ways, Lange watches resemble – or exceed – the reliability, robustness, quality and performance of German cars. When you strap a Lange watch on the wrist, it is as if you just took your seat behind the steering wheel in a German luxury car.

Lange & Söhne, to a proper visit of an integrated manufacture with Armin Strom or a jump into the creative world of MB&F and the MAD Gallery, here are five movies for the watch lovers.
