Singing the blues: The 5 best blue dial watches

Even though the classic blue dial has lost some ground in terms of popularity due to the rise of other colours, most notably green and pink, it is still arguably the most popular choice for any watch. This of course excludes black and white, but since they’re not actually colours, my point stands. Within the vast … Continued

The 10 best British watch brands helping the revival of a great industry

The go-to word for instant credibility these days is ‘Swiss made’, and while Japanese, German and even Chinese brands have made strides to topple the neutral state’s dominance, it is thanks to the once flourishing British watchmaking industry that us watch lovers have a hobby to obsess over today. From Mudge’s 1755 lever escapement and … Continued

Introducing – anOrdain Teams With Hodinkee To Launch The New Model 3 Sunburst

Just last year we visited a fascinating young independent watchmaking company, set up in an old carpet factory in Glasgow, Scotland. This brand goes by the name of anOrdain and has made a name for itself through a series of well-crafted and fun time-only watches. Things started with the Model 1 and vitreous enamel dials, […]

Hands-on – Spending Time With The anOrdain Model 2 MKII Racing Green

The small Scottish brand known as anOrdain has made quite a name for itself over the past five years, mainly through its traditionally crafted vitreous enamel dials. Usually reserved for watches at a much higher price point, anOrdain has found a way to make them in-house, at a competitive level. After our recent trip to […]

Review – anOrdain Model 2 – Vitreous Enamel Dial and Sporty Attire, from Scotland

It’s rare to see bold or hand-made elements in microbrand offerings, especially in the “under EUR 1,500” category. Hand-crafted guilloche dials, in-house calibres and advanced complications are generally reserved for luxury brands with steep prices. Grand Feu enamel dials are a part of that list, but Scottish newcomer anOrdain managed to produce them for its inaugural watch, the affordable anOrdain Model 1. It was a rough road to travel, and some of the highest-end brands continue to outsource enamel dials to companies like Donzé Cadrans in Switzerland, but after three years of research and experimentation, anOrdain accomplished what many others couldn’t – in-house vitreous enamel dials. After a well-received debut, the now sold-out Model 1 has a successor, the anOrdain Model 2.

Value Proposition – The anOrdain Model 2 – An Affordable, Sporty Sequel with Vitreous Enamel Dials from Scotland

Lewis Heath founded anOrdain a few years ago and assembled a team of jewelery designers, a typographer, graphic designer, product designer and watchmaker to collaborate on something truly unique. The principle focus was on Grand Feu enamel dials, a difficult craft that’s almost always reserved for much pricier, luxury timepieces. Many such brands outsource their enamel dials, but anOrdain spent the better part of three years perfecting its own in-house production. The result was the Model 1 in 2018 with the deep richness of enamel in assorted colors, limited to a production of only eight dials per week. The Model 2, their second attempt in creating nice and affordable pieces, adds a sportier touch with new hands, typography and a smaller case, but enamel dials remain the centerpiece. Let’s take a closer look at the sequel from this independent Scottish brand.

Value Proposition – The anOrdain Model 1 – With Enamel Dial Hand-Made in Glasgow, Scotland

There are a lot of new watch brands coming to market these days. And I mean A LOT. Some go down the popular Kickstarter route, whilst others – like the brand we’re looking at today – prefer to do things the old-fashioned way. The one thing they all share in common is a desire to differentiate themselves from each other and from other established players. It’s a tall order in what is a very crowded market, and many never quite get there. Newcomer, AnOrdain, from Glasgow, has adopted a decidedly simple approach to standing out from the crowd and so far, it seems to be working. Today, we’re getting hands-on with their first watch, the Model 1, which features a stunning enamel dial made in-house.
