SIHH 2019 – Armin Strom Dual Time Resonance Sapphire – Total Transparency on the Dual Movement

Armin Strom is on a rush. After a first watch equipped with two oscillators connected by a resonance clutch spring – the revolutionary Mirrored Force Resonance – the brand unveiled an impressive development based on this concept, a dual-time watch with dual-movement – the Masterpiece 1 Dual Time Resonance. And knowing the watch, it would a shame to hide such mechanics behind an obtrusive metallic case. This is why, for SIHH 2019, Armin Strom introduces a sapphire version of Dual Time Resonance, which fully exposes its movements to the world.

Armin Strom gained fame over the years for its bold skeletonised movements but really made an impact in the watchmaking arena when it resuscitated a 400-year old phenomenon known as resonance. The ensuing Resonance Collection with its dual – and independent – regulators was a hit but limited to models displaying time only functions. In a move to expand and endow the watch with complications, the resonance technology migrated to the Masterpiece I collection offering a useful GMT/dual time function. First launched in a Dual Time Resonance model in titanium in October 2018, Armin Strom unveils the same model in 18k white and rose gold cases in a limited edition of eight pieces in each metal.

Armin Strom is a watch brand that was known mainly for its bold skeletonized movements, however mostly time-only watches. But with the Mirrored Force Resonance, the brand showed unprecedented horological skills. This year, the brand pushes the concept even further, not only by using the concept of Resonance but by using the double-balance construction to create a Dual Time watch. We’ve told it to you several times when reviewing their timepieces and when we took the opportunity to visit the manufacture – because Armin Strom is a truly integrated manufacture that produces most of the parts of a watch and that has a true innovation power (see the Resonance watch). Today, we take the time to talk with Serge Michel and Claude Greisler, owners of the brand, to talk about what makes this watch manufacture unique and what they have in mind for the future.

Recently, I’ve had the good fortune to wear the Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance for a few weeks. This watch is one of the most revolutionary horological developments of recent years – or even decades – and seeing it in action on the wrist has been a sheer pleasure. Recently, we had the opportunity to spend some quality hands-on time with the new Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance, and it now receives some superb guilloché dials. Creating an outstanding contrast between technology and modernity (the movement) and tradition (the dials), the creation of this new watch involved more than Armin Strom’s watchmakers… We had previously seen the watch at SalonQP in London, but it wasn’t quite ready for publication then, so we had to hold off until now to share all the tantalising details with you. We’re pretty sure you’ll agree though, that it was definitely worth the wait.
