HANDS-ON: The most iconic Rolex gets an update – the Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41

rolex-datejust-126331-1There are two main contenders for the title of ‘most recognisable watch in the world’, both of them made by Rolex. Naturally, the Submariner has a good shot at the title, but for me, the clear winner is the Datejust. First introduced in 1945, it includes one of the most useful and ubiquitous complications – a date window. Like many features we take for granted on a watch today, this date represented a Rolex first, in that rather than slowly transitioning over a few hours, the Datejust’s date jumped instantly at the stroke of midnight. Even though the model has been around for over 60 years now, the fundamentals haven’t changed much. Three hands, Oyster case, automatic movement and of course the date (with Cyclops). We saw its first leap to the 40mm+ club in 2009, with the bulked up, 41mm Datejust II. But it wasn’t just the diameter of this watch that had increased, it was broader all over: bezel, indices and lugs all felt super-sized. And while the masculine look had its fans, it lacked the elegant proportions of the classic version. Enter this year’s Datejust 41, released at Baselworld in a swathe of yellow and Everose Rolesor models, with options including fluted and…

Chopard Imperiale Joaillerie Rainbow Watch Hands-On

At Baselworld 2016, Chopard released this new haute joaillerie rainbow version of its 40mm-wide Imperiale watch. Strictly speaking, most people at Chopard would categorize this Chopard Imperiale Joaillerie Rainbow as a women’s watch – and perhaps, for the most part, it is.

Angelus U40 Racing Tourbillon Skeleton Watch Hands-On

The Angelus U40 Racing Tourbillon Skeleton watch is currently the brand’s most accessibly-priced model, and a good way of looking at it is as a smaller sibling to the more expensive Angelus U20 Ultra-Skeleton Tourbillon watch.

Arnold & Son Nebula Watch Hands-On

One thing I have in common with Arnold & Son’s designer for movements and overall brand aesthetic, Sebastien Chaulmontet, is a love of symmetry. The Arnold & Son Nebula – which is a new model for 2016 – is all about that the quest to make a movement as symmetrical-looking as possible.

Wristwatch Review: Glashutte Original Senator Chronometer

By Roberta Naas
Just recently, I spent just about two weeks wearing the Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer watch that was unveiled earlier this year and is in stores now. Inspired by marine chronometers, the new piece is a bold extension of the Senator chronometers the brand first released in 2009. The new version is a slimmer and more elegant timepiece. Crafted in 18-karat white gold with a stunning finely grained blue dial, the

Victorinox Swiss Army Airboss Mach 9 Titanium Limited Edition Watch Hands-On

When a major global brand that produces millions of products each year produces something interesting as a limited edition of just 250 pieces, the implication is that the watches are truly a bit more limited. That is certainly the case with the handsome, new-for-2016 Victorinox Swiss Army Airboss Mach 9 Titanium Limited Edition that I found to be both legible and stylistically fetching.

Emmanuel Bouchet Complication One New Watches For 2016 Hands-On

Back in 2015, I was pleased to debut the Complication One watch by the talented Mr. Emmanuel Bouchet on aBlogtoWatch. Over time, the Complication One concept and watch has grown on me quite a bit, but I have to admit I really wasn’t sure what to think of the watch when I first saw it.

Patek Philippe 5396 Annual Calendar Moonphase Watch Hands-On

There is something intrinsically ornate about annual calendars like the Patek Philippe 5396, an undeniable X factor that seems well-suited to a dressy watch with an old-school charm. Maybe the annual calendar has less to prove than a perpetual calendar, having enough chill to just let February be itself.
