SIHH 2017 – IWC Da Vinci Tourbillon Retrograde Chronograph

As previously announced on Monochrome, the Schaffhausen-based manufacturer is revamping its Da Vinci collection in 2017 including a return to the original round case which popularised this collection in the 1980s (read our article here). SIHH 2017 is just about to get underway and so IWC has finally unveiled all the new editions for this year, including this complex model combining a flying tourbillon with hacking mechanism, a chronograph and a retrograde date.

Most of watch lovers might know that in a few days will be the first major watch event of the year, the SIHH 2017. On the sidelines of this massive event, some other brands, traditionally exposing at the Baselworld, are also benefiting from the traffic of journalists, collectors and retailers that the SIHH can drain. Watches and Formula 1 – Episode 4 – TAG Heuer & Red Bull Racing, This Season’s BIG Surprise!

Let’s be honest, this past season of Formula 1 was not the most exciting between the usual suspects up front, just like the last three seasons have basically seen one team dominate the whole year. The battle within that team however was particularly exciting, right down to the final meters of the final lap of the final race. Amidst all that internal drama however a few teams and driver’s still managed to steal the absolute show! The talk of the town and the team and driver on everyone’s mind: Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen! This young Dutchman surprised everyone by pulling off a seemingly impossible achievement; becoming the youngest-ever Grand Prix winner. Along with his teammate, he was the only driver outside of Mercedes this season to clinch a victory, doing things on the track that no one has ever seen before! All of that is here to remind us about the partnership that goes along: TAG Heuer and Red Bull Racing – and the long history of Heuer into F1 timekeeping.

“What If” – The A. Lange & Söhne Datograph in STEEL

What if… What if I could imagine and create my dream watch, the timepiece I always dreamed of, the watch that does not exist and that I’d love to own one day. Well, if you read Monochrome on a regular basis, you already know that we’re not shy when it comes to making predictions and using Photoshop to imagine potential Rolex watches (don’t worry, we will be doing it again for Baselworld 2017…). Today though we have something a bit different. I’ve been playing around with Photoshop again but not to create a potential Rolex, but rather to imagine my dream watch, a watch that I’m pretty sure will never exist but that haunts my nights. For me, it is the A. Lange & Söhne Datograph, the ultimate chronograph by my standards and a watch that I’ve dreamed about seeing in stainless steel… What if?

Pre-SIHH 2017 – IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph (and a bit about the future collection to come)

It has become sort of a tradition for IWC now. Each year, when the SIHH is about to open, we all know that the Schaffhausen-based manufacture will come with an entirely revisited collection. After the 2016 Pilot’s Watches, the 2015 Portugeisers, the 2014 Aquatimers and the 2013 Ingenieurs, it’s now time to revamp the other collection, a range of watches that might not be the most popular among a large audience: the Da Vinci. An icon of the 1980s, this watch has since seen many variations, being even dressed in tonneau-shaped case. For the SIHH 2017, IWC goes back to the roots of the collection and, to open the festivities, introduces the flagship version: the IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph.

Christmas Shopping Guide – The Best Chronograph Watches of 2016

Following our previous guides about the best sports watches, the best dress watches and the best ultra-complicated watches of 2016, it’s time for us now to look at one of the main watch categories of them all, and I mean by that the chronographs. Chronographs are amongst the most sold timepieces, they are amongst the most sought-after in auctions and two of them are certainly the most iconic watches of all times. The best chronograph watches of 2016 is not a subject we should treat lightly at all. And here are the 5 watches that resulted from long debates at the Monochrome redaction.

Montblanc Introduces Bronze Into Its 1858 Collection, Including The Stunning 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter

The Montblanc 1858 Collection certainly is one of our favorites here, at Monochrome. It indeed pays tribute to the military roots of the Villeret manufacture and the 1930s pilot watches produced at that time by Minerva (now part of Montblanc). Large diameters, highly contrasted dials, cathedral hands… all sounds perfectly vintage and faithful to the Minerva heritage. To even reinforce that vintage feel, the brand is about to introduce some new models in the collection, which for the first time will use bronze elements for the case, and this includes the stunning Montblanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter, that we already showed you several times.
