The Collector’s Series – @winewhiskywatches and his MB&F Legacy Machine No.1

I can remember clearly when MB&F’s Max Busser showed me the Legacy Machine 1 for the first time. It is simply one of those watches that immediately makes an everlasting impression. Mind you, this was a few years ago when such technicalities were simply absent from other brands, small or big. It was quite revolutionary and groundbreaking, or rather paving the way for others. One of the collectors who already appeared in our Collector’s Series goes under the IG handle @winewhiskywatches and today we’re talking about his magnificent MB&F Legacy Machine 1 in white gold.

The Collector’s Series – Frank and his Vintage Audemars Piguet Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ 5402ST

Today, we’ll get straight to the point and speak frankly and honestly. Frank, Founder and Managing Director of MONOCHROME, whom I’ve known for more than seven years now, is probably one of the most upfront and straightforward people I’ve ever met: Frank is a  man who says what he thinks. And today we’ll talk about one of his most beloved watches, one that he’s owned for years and that I’ve always wanted to feature in our ‘Collector’s Series’, his handsome Audemars Piguet Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ 5402ST. And because this watch is such an icon, it doesn’t really need an introduction anymore. Instead, we’ll be looking at what really matters, the collecting side of things, the market, the fuzz around the watch…

The Collector’s Series – @Watch_Time_It_Is and his Grönefeld Parallax

Two weeks ago we already talked with the California-based collector who goes under the Instagram handle @Watch_Time_It_Is and we talked about a rather rare, but extremely beautifully finished, watch of his, the McGonigle Tuscar Bánú. Today we’re looking at another watch. Again one from a small independent watch brand. Again one from a brand of two brothers. And again one that showcases stupendously beautiful movement finishing. Let’s see what motivated @Watch_Time_It_Is to buy a Grönefeld Parallax!

The Collector’s Series – @edthezilla and his F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain calibre 1403

Instagram is a source of inspiration and it proves to be a superb platform to meet like-minded people. For me, this means an Instagram feed of watches, watches, watches, and… watches. It is also the perfect platform to decide who sees your posts and with whom you want to be in touch, it offers a lot of privacy if you want that. And getting in touch is easy, peer to peer, and only if both parties are interested in getting in touch. One of the persons I’m in touch with goes by the Instagram name Edthezilla. Now I’m typing his IG name, I realize that I never asked why on Earth he calls himself Edthezilla. Anyways, we discuss watches, both his and mine. He owns quite a collection, comprising some of the most desirable modern Rolex and Patek sports watches, some very nice vintage Speedmasters and F.P. Journe. Quite a few Journe’s actually and when I asked him to participate in our Collector’s Series he immediately told me that he wanted to talk about the FP Journe Tourbillon Souverain Calibre 1403.

The Collector’s Series – @Watch_Time_It_Is and his McGonigle Tuscar Bánú

Today we’re talking with @Watch_Time_It_Is, a California-based seasoned watch collector who owns quite a few pieces that I’d call ‘dream watches’: a Grönefeld Parallax; the LM Perpetual Calendar from MB&F; an early Romain Gauthier; and something that I’ve never encountered ‘in the wild’, a Tuscar Bánú made by Stephen McGonigle. Stephen is an Irish watchmaker, […]

The Collector’s Series – Frank and his MIH Watch developed by Ludwig Oechslin and Paul Gerber

Fly under the radar. This could be the motto of the first generation MIH Watch that was developed by none other than Ludwig Oechslin and Paul Gerber. Christian Gafner, an industrial designer who never before designed a watch, has to be credited for the ‘fly-under-the-radar’ design that goes together so well with what’s under the ‘hood’. The MIH Watch served as a fundraiser for the Musée International d’Horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, where Ludwig Oechslin was the conservator and was sold in a newspaper!

The Collector’s Series – @winewhiskywatches and his IWC “Safari” Big Pilot (AKA the Tribute to 5002)

When Chris Granger-Herr, the CEO of IWC, posted a photo of himself wearing the prototype for this updated version of the original 5002-generation Big Pilot in matte titanium while on his African Safari, collectors took notice. Shortly after, IWC announced a limited edition of 100 watches, which sold out almost instantly via Instagram (despite a six-month wait for them to be built). The watch was immediately nicknamed the “Safari” Big Pilot, while IWC officially named it the “Tribute to 5002.” Today we’re talking to @winewhiskywatches about his IWC Big Pilot Tribute to 5002 ref. IW501007 AKA the “Safari” Big Pilot.
