EVENT: 7 watches spotted at the launch of the Ferrari Portofino in Byron Bay, inc. IWC, Creux Automatiq and Rolex

The new Ferrari Portofino — the replacement for Ferrari’s first ever front-engine V8 convertible, the California — has plans for you. It wants to be your first Ferrari. It’s eyeing you even more closely if your current whip is an Aston Martin, Porsche or McLaren. Meanwhile, at the ‘White Night’ themed launch at the Elements Resort in Byron Bay, hosted by Ferrari Australasia boss Herbert Appleroth (whose watch collection we explored in a video below), our eyes were divided between the shining flanks of Ferrari’s latest high-speed cruiser and the place they are usually trained on: Wrists. We spotted seven watches in particular, with stories about them ranging from husband and wife rivalry over a vintage GMT, a self-bought divorce watch, and a local brand whose stocks are on the rise. If you’d like to know more about the car, here’s about as much as we can impart without getting too far out of our wheelhouse: its construction is similar to the California T’s platform, and it keeps the same wheelbase and overall rough dimensions. It’s powered by a 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged F154 V8 (also shared with the 488 GTB) and has a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. How fast is it? According to Ferrari, it goes from zero to 100km/h hero in 3.5 seconds…

EVENT: Bollywood royalty Aishwarya Rai Bachchan opens Longines flagship Sydney boutique

Wherever Aishwarya Rai Bachchan goes in India there is a monumental crowd surge, and it was no different in Sydney at the weekend when Longines launched their flagship boutique in Australia and celebrated their starring role in the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Some local Indian film fans had brought their entire clans and staked out a viewing spot when the Queen Victoria Building opened that morning, even though the superstar was not due to arrive until 6.30pm. The press scrum was on when the world-famous beauty made her entrance, flanked by intimidating security, followed by countless hands launching mobile phones high. But the crowd was in respectful awe; there was no pandemonium. As Longines’ Ambassador of Elegance welcomed her audience with the Hindu greeting, Namaste, the crowd listened intently to their icon. Alongside Juan-Carlos Capelli, Longines Vice President and Head of International Marketing, Rai Bachchan graciously held the 2018 Queen’s Baton aloft, after it was handed to her by Australian high jumper Amy Pejkovic. “The pleasure is all mine being here this evening,” she smiled. “Thank you Longines for having me enjoy this wonderful little adventure of receiving the Queen’s Baton. It’s been a privilege for me receiving the baton.” She…

Hands-On – The Garrick S1 Prototype With Skeletonized Dial, Offering A Window Into British Watchmaking

For the last few years, we’ve been hearing about the so-called “resurgence” of British watchmaking. Run by passionate Brits with a strong streak of defiance, these small independent brands are (very) slowly but surely gaining a foothold in the market and proving they have what it takes to stick around for a while. One such brand, which we’ve written about several times before on MONOCHROME, is Garrick (you can find all past coverage here.) Today, we’re taking a closer look at the S1, the latest model from the brand, or rather a prototype of it.

Fabergé’s Aurélie Picaud Wins Woman of the Year Award at Eve’s Watch Awards

In a predominantly male-dominated watch world, we have some women in top positions who are making a definitive mark. Eve’s Watch aims to put the spotlight on those women, and on a choice of women’s watches that have been awarded best in one of twelve categories. Additionally, there’s a thirteenth award, chosen by the public. Last week, Aurélie Picaud, Timepiece Director at Fabergé, was awarded Woman of the Year at the 2017 Eve’s Watch Awards.

EVENT: Ferrari celebrates 70th birthday with best possible party wingman, Hublot – week-long bash ensues

Usually, an event recap refers to one single event. This one, however, details a week-long bash during Melbourne’s Motorclassica that saw the town literally painted red when the Royal Exhibition Building was lit up in a bold Italian red, with Hublot and Ferrari logos stamping the iconic site. It also included the largest ever convoy of Ferraris ever assembled in Australia, and a hell of a party to reveal the new LaFerrari Aperta in the Melbourne Docklands. Last, but certainly not least, was a new watch co-designed by Ferrari and Hublot, the extremely limited Techframe Ferrari 70 Years Tourbillon Chronograph. Remember, this was a 70th. If this is what the two brands mustered for a birthday party, just imagine what they would have done for a buck’s night. Hublot has a long-standing global alignment with Ferrari and it’s as perfect a match as any between watch and vehicle, with both marques striving to change their respective niches with technology and flair. The Drive What is the collective noun for a group of Ferraris? May we suggest a ‘growl’? That’s exactly what the idyllic lake and seaside suburb of Albert Park heard when more than 100 Ferraris took to the M1 on…

A. Lange & Söhne x Monochrome Event Recap

We don’t do this often, certainly not, however recently we hosted an event together with a watch brand. The brand in question was A. Lange & Söhne, which is in my humble opinion among the most beautiful brands in the world. The location for the event was the Louman museum, which showcases the world’s largest automotive collection in private possession. A great match! Here’s a recap of a memorable evening.
