Some watchmaker-and-carmaker collaborations are a great success; others fail miserably; most, of course, fall somewhere in the middle. Many of the variables, the partners obviously can’t control — timing and luck, for example — but others, they can govern and refine. The now five-year-strong Hublot and Ferrari alliance proves a success story to learn from.
With 2016 (thankfully) behind us, aBlogtoWatch would like to poke its nose into 2017, and offer the watch industry a few suggestions on things we would like to see more of in the new year, and also things we’d like to see less of.
The Swiss watch industry was likely hoping for some performance rebounds at the end of 2016 in anticipation of the holiday shopping season, but alas such hopes have not been realized. Rather than proclaim “doom and gloom,” I prefer to see this as part of a larger trend of returning to normalcy.

During a recent trip to Hong Kong, something interesting dawned upon me about what is probably very likely to happen in the watch world sometime soon. That thing I’m talking about is a massive explosion of timepieces flowing into the pre-owned watch market in China.
In this era of what some might call excessive dial decoration, several brands including Chanel, Graff, and Van Cleef & Arpels, are actually covering up their watch dials. The “secret watch” is a ladies’ jewelry watch with a cover that moves via hinges or springs to hide or reveal the dial by activating a release somewhere on the watch.
