Five of the best action-movie watches you can still buy at retail

Watches in film, whether or not snobbish enthusiasts are willing to admit it to themselves, are some of the biggest motivators for people to get into watch collecting. First you fall in love with one watch, say the Submariner after watching Sean Connery suavely save the day. But, like a bag of potato chips, you … Continued

One to watch: “Making Time” documentary now available to stream in time for the holiday break

Ever since I saw a 30-minute teaser for this film during Dubai Watch Week last year, I have been itching for the premiere of the full feature. Making Time, executive produced by Ian Skelleren (co-founder of Quill & Pad) and Hind Abdul Hamied Seddiqi (Director General of Dubai Watch Week), not only delivers a documentary that … Continued

From Panerai to Piaget, Hugh Grant’s watches are a whole lot more alpha-male than you’d think

hugh grant watch collectionAt the turn of the millennium, Hugh Grant was the man. In 1994, he won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his performance in Four Weddings and a Funeral and, in 1995, Empire magazine proclaimed him to be one of the “100 Sexiest Stars” in film history. Grant’s breakout role was in Four Weddings and a Funeral and he continued winning hearts with his very English brand of twinkle-eyed, floppy-haired, bumbling charm in Notting Hill (1999), Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) and Love Actually (2003). But for all his middle-class faux modesty, the watches that Grant wears on screen are about as alpha-male as they come and appear to reflect his personal taste. Let’s take a closer look. Panerai Ref. OP 6560 Luminor Marina – Bridget Jones’s Diary, 2001 Bridget Jones’s Diary is one of the most famous romcoms of the last two decades, and Grant (playing the caddish Daniel Cleaver) was out there flexing on everyone with a stainless-steel Panerai on a bracelet. While it’s tough to get a perfect look at the watch, the camera does linger while he helps Renée Zellweger get dressed for a Tarts and Vicars costume party, and you can see the beefy cushion…

Watches worn by Al Pacino on the big screen

watches worn by Al PacinoAs promised in the article on Robert De Niro and his watches in film, we are following up with watches worn by Al Pacino. Pacino is best known for his roles as Detective Vincent Hanna in Heat, Cuban gangster Tony Montana in Scarface, Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman, and Mafia don Michael Corleone in The Godfather trilogy. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for 1992’s Scent of a Woman. In terms of watches in films, Pacino has had some interesting timepieces occupying his wrist. In Scarface, the watch Pacino wore has received the most attention, in regards to which particular timepiece it was. The consensus is that it’s an Omega La Magique. This is a quartz timepiece featuring a gold case, with a clear dial and “mystery hands”. After doing some further research, I don’t think it is actually the Omega, since the watch Pacino wears has a crown at the 3 o’clock position and the La Magique does not. The dial also differs to the La Magique, since only a small portion of the dial is clear while surrounded by the rest of the case, compared to the Omega, which has a black dial around…

Paradise overseas with the Vacheron Constantin Overseas

Vacheron Constantin OverseasEditor’s note: A couple of years ago, Andrew and the team were lucky enough to travel to Lord Howe Island to explore the Vacheron Constantin Overseas collection and, in the process, enjoy the unbelievable scenery of volcanic spires and fish-filled shallows. While the setting was one of the most remarkable on earth, the focus was on one of the most remarkable brands on earth with a collection of watches that boast the Geneva Seal in a very sporty package. Enjoy the video! We gave a glimpse of our 48 hours in paradise with the Vacheron Constantin Overseas collection a month ago, but now, with the watches officially revealed and reviewed, it’s time to turn up the envy to unforeseen levels. In addition to mouthwatering shots of the collection, hands-down one of the best in the steel sports category this year, we’re also showing here just how spectacular Lord Howe Island is. From the volcanic peaks, to the friendly schools of fish that mill around your ankles in the shallows, to the outlook from the luxury Capella Lodge where my room had, just months before, been home to Blake Lively during the shooting of shark-as-villain thriller The Shallows. It’s all here,…

VIDEO: The Breguet Marine Collection

breguet marine collectionEarlier this year, Time+Tide celebrated the arrival of the 2019 Breguet collection in Australia. For those who attended, it was a night nobody would forget in a hurry, in part due to the impeccable setting, but mainly thanks to the sensational watches that were on display. Of these sensational watches, the real hero of the evening was the Breguet Marine Collection, which has a number of new additions to the family this year. In this collection, the thoughtful use of materials is immediately obvious. The titanium cases and bracelets of the Marine Alarme Musicale 5547 and of the time-only Marine 5517 give a sensation of weightless effortlessness, while still offering a tactile robustness in their build quality. On the more feminine side of the collection, the Breguet Marine Dame 9518 reference presents a range of dial, bezel and strap options, including a stunning mother-of-pearl dial that has been guillochéd by the hands of a master craftsman. Another option within the Marine Dame 9518 reference is a dial that is as blue and liquid as the ocean itself, and delivers a depth of texture that is rarely seen. While these four watches show the depth and breadth of the Breguet Marine Collection,…

From Dr No to Spectre – the Complete List of Bond Watches

We all know James Bond, AKA 007, the suave British secret service agent who has been on missions all over the world. Throughout many of the films, he has always had a wristwatch to keep track of the time and, in some cases, help him get out of a jam. Today we take a look at the watches that have featured in the films. Dr. No – Rolex Submariner Reference 6538 Ian Fleming wrote in the original Bond novels that a Rolex was the wristwatch of 007. For the first film, Dr. No, actor Sean Connery, playing Bond, wore a Reference 6538 Submariner. It was worn not on the stainless steel bracelet but a leather strap. From Russia With Love – Rolex Submariner Reference 6538 The watch was on the wrist of 007 again in the next film, From Russia With Love, on the leather strap. Goldfinger – Rolex Submariner Reference 6538 In the opening scene of third film, Goldfinger, we get the money shot that cemented the Submariner in cinematic history. Connery lifts his tuxedo jacket to check the time, with the aid of a cigarette lighter, and the details of the watch are clearly shown. The leather strap has been…

LIST: 5 out of this world watches perfect for the Guardians of Galaxy, just in time for Vol. 2

As Marvelites and Comic-Con attendees undoubtedly already know, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the much-anticipated follow-up to the 2014 original, is in Australian cinemas today. As a closet Marvel fangirl (Pssst, Antman. You never return my calls.), this is a big deal for me. So to celebrate I’ve put together five (very different) watches, for the five (very different) Guardians, and added an auditory accompaniment taken from “Awesome Mix Tape #2”, just for fun. Enjoy. Star-Lord (Peter Quill) According to his Marvel bio, infant Peter stared up at the stars in the night sky for nearly an hour before his mother found him, after surviving an attempted murder by his step-father. It is this legend that helped give Peter his character name of Star-Lord, and in turn led me to the Seiko Astron GPS Solar made in partnership with Giugiaro Design. Not only is the word “Astron” derived from the Greek word meaning “star”, but the titanium case, ceramic bezel, and high magnetic resistance make the piece both extremely lightweight and tremendously durable; traits that are ideal for, say, flying through galaxies at high speeds. Associated track: “My Sweet Lord” – George Harrison Gamora This ass-kicking Zen-Whoberi gives new meaning to the…
