SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 11, August 2017

Well, this month ended just as quickly as it started, busy with watch related activities — and a bunch of incomings (including this stunning tropical Tudor Sub). Here’s what happened… I kicked off August with a coffee with Rich who, aside from having a great car collection, has a love for watches. He was rocking a Rolex Sea-Dweller (SD4K) on an Everest Rubber strap. Rich noted he prefers to wear watches on some sort of strap, and the only watch he keeps on the bracelet is his Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (ref. 15300). Understandable — it’s one of the best bracelets I’ve ever felt. Later, I made my way down to the Nomos Glashütte x Monards event, tucked away at South Yarra’s famous Stables. There I saw Phoenix, who just so happened upon a purchase. This particular model, the Nomos Club neomatik, caught her eye, and for good reason — it’s a great looking watch! What Phoenix really loved though, is that although it’s a diving watch, it doesn’t share the chunkiness you usually find on more popular models. Phoenix has an impressive collection, featuring brands like Rolex, Tudor and Roger Dubuis. For her next piece, she’s tossing up between a Blancpain…

Nathan tells us his IG feed is shoes, cameras and watches — but honestly, it’s mostly watches. We’re absolutely fine with that, and suspect you will be too. NAME: Nathan Liusvia OCCUPATION: Photographer HANDLE:  @MySafari FOLLOWERS: 2.6k LOCATION: Kuala Lumpur Who are you? My name is Nathan Liusvia, but on social media, I’m known as @MySafari. During the day I work in a bank, in a regional role which involves quite a bit of travelling. How do you unwind? My responsibilities at work keep me rather busy, sometimes even on the weekends, but when I do get some time to relax, I make the most of it. I love to watch movies, go for a relaxing massage with my wife, or catch up on new episodes of my favourite shows on Netflix. I also love scrolling through my Instagram feed to interact with fellow vintage watch-lovers around the world and hunting down the next watch to purchase and add to my growing collection. What’s your daily watch and why? Over the years, a number of watches have been added to or sold off from my collection. But right now, I have gorgeous timepieces from Gallet, Movado, Lemania, Rolex, Longines, Universal…

Angus is well known to Sydneysiders as part of a family-run business, AHW Studio, nestled in The Rocks, Sydney. AHW Studio collects, researches and upcycles obsolete and forgotten timepieces into wearable art — think cufflinks or a signet-ring with a difference. So if you’re looking to buy a gift for ‘the watch lover who has everything’, this is the account for you. NAME: Angus Zhao OCCUPATION: Horological jewellery maker HANDLE: @AHWStudio FOLLOWERS: 5.5k LOCATION: The Rocks, Sydney, Australia How do you unwind? In a way, I don’t necessarily ‘unwind’ (though that’s a good pun), because work is play and play is everything else. It all loops back in on itself. I’d go home and read up on some horological history or edit photographs. For the other side of this, small road-trips and drives, I really enjoy. To be able to soak up your own city and take photographs. What’s your daily watch and why? For me, a watch should be wearable and suitable, and more importantly – historically, culturally, or socially significant. As much as the notion of watches these days has transcended, they should still be doing what they were made to do all those years ago, with the right care.…

From vintage to a one-of-a-kind piece celebrating Springfield’s finest, Darren’s watch collection is top notch. NAME: Darren OCCUPATION: Professor of Law at Northwestern University and Attorney for start-up businesses and entrepreneurs HANDLE: @dmgreen11 FOLLOWERS: 10.7k LOCATION: USA Hi Darren, first question. What’s your daily watch and why? I tend to wear my watches two days at a time, so I don’t really have a consistent daily wear. I do, however, have a couple of go-to watches for travel and other situations where I may be banging around a bit: my ZRC Grands Fonds (the recent re-release) and my Damasko DK11. The ZRC is just about the perfect “homage” diver in my view, and the Damasko packs more technology and innovation in the movement and case than watches costing 10 times the price. And, to my eye, both are flat out killer in the looks category. What are you working on at the moment? I typically split my time each week teaching at Northwestern and working with early stage businesses to help them form, grow, raise money etc.  I will be taking a group of law and masters students out to San Francisco shortly to meet with a bevy of venture…

Meet Laurent. Guess what brand he’s a fan of? Hint: his Instagram handle isn’t named for his love of the English royal dynasty… NAME: Laurent Ge OCCUPATION: Marketing and Communications for The Belgium Watch Club. HANDLE:  @MisterTUDOR FOLLOWERS: 18.6K LOCATION: The Netherlands (most of the time) Tell me about yourself: Hi mate, how ya goin’? – Haha still practising my Australian accent for you guys. Um, I guess I’ll start off by introducing myself. I am Laurent but known in the watchfam as Mister Tudor. I’m a 25-year-old watch collector with a preference for Omega. Kidding, of course — Tudor. I absolutely love and live to travel. I was born in The Netherlands, raised in Belgium, lived in Canada, Denmark, and now back in the homeland The Netherlands. My family have taken me across the globe ever since I was born which gave me that travel-bug I guess. I am a big fan of cars and watches… and I just LOVE to meet new characters who share the same passion — like you guys! How do you unwind? I love to unwind by reading Time+Tide. That rhymes… or doesn’t it? I love Instagram, I try to reply to each and every…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 10, July 2017 – the watchfam edition

This month really flew by, which, going by the past six months, is the new standard. It started with a quick visit from Nick Kavvalos (@Nikokav) who was down from Sydney for ‘work’ with his Omega Planet Ocean. A couple of local watch collectors and I took him out for coffee and some car shopping. Nick is still revelling in his most recent purchase, an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver. Later in the month, I snuck along to a meet-up with the RedBar Crew Melbourne Chapter, which is headed up by Ernie Tang, a regular fixture on Time+Tide and the local scene. Like their fellow international chapters, RedBar is held at a secret location (for obvious reasons), tucked away in one of Melbourne’s many laneways. Here are some of the spotting highlights of the night. The first piece that caught my eye as I walked in was an IWC Big Pilot Heritage 48 on the wrist of member Yumie (@Yumie88). It was great to see the ladies well represented on the night, and Yumie was out in force, with a 48mm Big Pilot no less. It turns out Yumie has quite the collection, something we’ll be sure to cover in…

Today we catch up with the enigmatic Swiss penguin (hey, it’s what her profile says) with a love for complicated watches and a top notch feed. Meet @LindaZinha… NAME: Viviana – but please, call me Vivi OCCUPATION: Watch retail HANDLE:  @LindaZinha FOLLOWERS: 3K LOCATION: Switzerland Tell me about yourself: I’m a twenty-something-year-old girl who is nuts about watches — and have been ever since I started my career, about 9 years ago. I speak 4 languages fluently and a 5th language (only under torture). I’m lucky enough to have two nationalities, and enjoy the perks of both, travelling lots and meeting new people. How do you unwind? I hardly ever have time to unwind for real. I work from 9am until 7.45pm, which includes a two-hour commute, so I do lots of reading! Otherwise, I enjoy going to the gym or dancing. A good movie is also something that can put my mind off a long day, and when my brain is too tired to read. Lately, I have been reading a lot of management books. What’s your daily watch and why? My weekday watch is a Montblanc Dual Counter. I really enjoy wearing it because it’s not a girly…

Mr Zhu is a purveyor of all the finer things in life, including watches, cars, menswear and whiskey. His feed is overflowing with the spoils of his day job – a provider of high-end ‘value added’ services, for financial institutions within China. NAME: Mr. 朱 OCCUPATION: High-end service provider for financial institutions HANDLE: @Horoloupe FOLLOWERS: 27K LOCATION: Shanghai, China How do you unwind? When I’m not working (which is almost never), I tend to either spend time with my lovely dog Cupcake (who, if you follow me on Instagram, you should be quite acquainted with), or catching up with friends and family. Apart from that, I try my best to make time for the gym and the driving range, but I find that increasingly difficult due to how busy I am! I also love going on drives in my car or simply researching which watch to buy next! What’s your daily watch and why? This is an extremely hard question as I tend to rotate my watches as much as I can. It varies based on the occasion or even the client that I’m meeting. For instance, when I’m meeting an important client or attending an event, I tend to…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 9, June 2017 – the collector’s edition

The past few weeks have been eventful, to say the least. With the team (again) scattered across the country (and the world), here’s what I’ve been up to. We’ve nicknamed this dispatch the “collector’s edition” – for reasons you’ll soon find out… To kick things off, Australian Race Car Driver and host of Top Gear Australia, Steve Pizzati, dropped past T+T HQ for a coffee. It turns out that Steve’s quite the watch fan, having flipped and flopped his way into a very respectable collection. I caught him wearing his PAM372, but he’s got big plans for his next acquisition. Favouring larger pieces, he’s now eyeing off an IWC Big Pilot or an Aquatimer. As we progressed through the month, it just so happened that Emmanuel Breguet (yes, of THAT Breguet) was in the country. Felix and I hit Crown Casino for a dinner hosted by Monards, at which Emmanuel himself gave a fun and educational presentation on the history of Breguet. It’s always great to hear these stories of a brand’s provenance, especially from someone who shares the name! Later in the month Sydney was calling, and the entire team (welcome, Ali) made the trip up for the opening of…

Brandon’s one of the big personalities of the Instagram watch fam, with a revolving collection and crisp photography. He’s one of the guys behind Head2HeadCopycat and calls Texas home. Hook ’em horns! NAME: Brandon Zabodyn OCCUPATION: Commercial Banker HANDLE: @bzabodyn214 FOLLOWERS: 33k LOCATION: Texas, USA Tell us about yourself. I’m Texas born and raised. I’m married to my high school sweetheart, Jenna, and have two kids, Dayton and Mallory, who pop up on the feed every now and then. We both graduated from the University of Texas and love our Longhorns. I’ve been in banking for around 14 years but recently took a brief break to help the family business (scrap metal recycling) during an expansion. I’ve always had a love for watches, going back to my days as a teenager, when I’d see the “successful” guys around town with gold Presidents and Submariners and such. In small-town Texas, there’s Rolex (you know, the only watch that doesn’t “tick”), then there’s everything else. When I was 16 I saved up for my first G-Shock, and then it was stolen several months later. As funny as it is, that actually sparked it for me. The first “real” watch I bought myself (after I got my first bonus at my…
