MY WATCH STORY: Will’s Perrelet Dual Time Skeleton Chronograph

A lot of watch conversation happens in high places. So it should come as no surprise that our recent trip to Monaco, where we spent a good four days standing at bars and in VIP lodges with celebrities and billionaires, yielded a ‘My Watch Story’. The subject is Will, and he manages a raft of high profile bands and actors. His choice of wrist wear for this day, and every day, is a Perrelet. Your name: Will Ward, ROAR Management Your watch: Perrelet Dual Time Skeleton Chronograph What’s the story behind it? Last summer I went to see one of my clients (musician Zac Brown) and to stay at his house. We sat down to dinner with his family, and afterwards he left the table and came back with this roll containing a couple of watches. He pulled this one out and he said, “try this on”. I put it on and said, “This is an amazing watch, wow! And the band is really cool.” I tried it on and was asking him how long he had had the watch for. He said, “It’s not my watch anymore…. I had it for three years, but it’s your watch now.” I’d been sick…

Meet all-round dude and the man who’s looked after the most expensive Tudor ever sold, Justin Sebesta. NAME: Justin Sebesta OCCUPATION: Horologist (watchmaker) at HQ Milton HANDLE:  @Sebs415 FOLLOWERS: 2,853 LOCATION: San Francisco, California Tell us about yourself: My name is Justin and I’m 34 years old, living and working in San Francisco. I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona under the hot, hot sun and surrounded by the beautiful desert landscape. Spent a few years in Seattle, Washington before making San Francisco home. I enjoy being outdoors, working on cars, and of course watches. I am a horologist for HQ Milton.  In short, I repair fine timepieces, vintage Rolex being the bulk of my work. I would say I’m now an expert in the repair and restoration of Rolex watches. I’ve been doing this for seven years now. I love working with my hands, solving problems and keeping active. How do you unwind? On the weekends, I enjoy hiking as much as I can – being out in nature is something I’ve done as a kid and even as an adult it helps me to recharge and get away from the city.  I also have a ’69 BMW 1602 that I enjoy…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 8, May 2017

The past few months have been so crazy that we split last month’s dispatch into two. As Basel wrapped up, I headed back to the great city of London for round two. Apparently I wasn’t sick of looking at watches yet. Silas’s Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar 3940G Whilst roaming the streets of Clerkenwell, I took the opportunity to stop in with Silas Walton, founder of A Collected Man. Silas, who prefers smaller watches, was wearing a Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar ref. 3940G from his own collection. It’s always interesting to see the pieces dealers (and serial flippers) hang onto, and for how long. However, Silas gave no indication that this one was going anywhere soon. If independent brands, high horology, or rare vintage is your poison – then he’s your man. Johnny’s Linde Werdelin Hard Black II I had the opportunity to catch up with London based engraver, Johnny King, after being Insta-friends for quite a few months. We grabbed coffee at the famous Monocle Café, where Johnny gave me the honor of a live ‘unboxing’. Yes, he waited until he was with me. I don’t know how he managed to contain the excitement, but boy – will power. In the box…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @KingNerd

Real nerd @KingNerd might not be a real monarch, but he is royalty in the world of fine engraving. Definitely worth a follow if you’re into acanthus leaves and long guns. Oh, and watches. NAME: Johnny King OCCUPATION: Engraver HANDLE: @KingNerd FOLLOWERS: 3.5k LOCATION: London, UK Tell me about yourself: My name is actually John, after my father and his father and so on, but friends started calling me Johnny and it’s kind of stuck! I’m a James Purdey & Sons (a very famous London gunmaker) trained engraver and was born and raised in West London. How do you unwind? Unwinding can consist of a few things for me – kicking my feet up and reading comics, listening to hip hop, going to a museum, looking at art or spending time with my family. My little boy, Hudson, decides whether I’m actually allowed to chill and do nothing, haha. What’s your daily watch and why? My daily watch at the moment is the Linde Werdelin Hard Black II, but I also collect Seikos. As for other watches in my collection, that would be telling. But I don’t just love the big brands, I love buying a watch that catches my eye. I recently bought…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 7, April 2017

Last month’s dispatch was written in an airport lounge as I waited to fly out to Basel, via London, for my very first Baselworld experience. Now to report back on what was a big month, to say the least. My trip to Baselworld started in London, where I shook the jetlag and spent a few days catching up with friends and family. The stars aligned and Ted Gushue, Editorial Director of Petrolicious, happened to be in town. We spent the morning driving round London in a lovely Porsche 911 Carrera 3.0 (thanks to the London City Car Club). On Ted’s wrist was an Autodromo Group B Evoluzione – Ted’s watch of choice when globetrotting, and one that’s always a big hit with the car guys. Next on my London itinerary was a visit to the Phillips auction house, where I caught up with their watch specialist, Paul David Maudsley. Paul started the conversation by apologising that he didn’t have too much to show me. He then proceeded to unveil the entire Crosthwaite & Gavin Collection, which is going up for auction in November. Paul also happened to have with him a piece from his personal collection, a 1954 Rolex Datejust ref. 6309 Thunderbird, as well as the…

MY WATCH STORY: Running into last year’s crush in Hall 1, Jared’s Breguet Type XXI 3817

There are watches you see that have an immediate impact, but then the feeling fades. You see the same watch some years later and you can remember thinking it was amazing, but sometimes the desire to own it is gone. The opposite happened when I spotted Jared’s Breguet Type XXI 3817, which was released at Baselworld last year. It remains one of the finest pilot’s chronographs available, and one of the best value in terms of materials, quality and finishing with pricing at $17,800. And that’s without mentioning its looks. My mancrush on this perfectly chiselled piece is more intense than ever. Time has only made its combination of rugged machismo and fine guilloched detail stand out even more off the wrist. Below my misty-eyed iPhone shots, you can find a much better quality selection we took last year. Thanks to Jared for letting me fawn all over it and try it on, yet again. Why did you choose this one? With my style I am more of a sporty person and I like to have a watch I can wear every day with every outfit. I also really like the vintage style of the strap. At the same time it keeps…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 6, March 2017

February was meant to give us some recovery time from the madness of SIHH, before talk of Baselworld began. But it didn’t really happen like that. The month flew by in a blur of scheduling (well done Elise, queen of ‘hell Tetris’ and spotting. In fact, I’m currently writing this dispatch from the airport lounge, en route to London first – where I have a couple of big marks to hit for some A-Grade watch hunting – and then to Basel, when I’ll meet up with the guys and get my key to the T+T frat palace around the corner from Baselworld. It’s going to be my first Basel. The excitement levels are atomic. Obviously the next Spotted! will be big. But before then, let’s get February sorted… Early on in the month, Sydney-based watch-collecting-couple Hal (@WatchULove) and Nilly (@Nilly_A) came south to the far superior city that we call Melbourne. Hal was sporting the seldom seen F. P. Journe Chronomètre Bleu, which was a pretty important and highly anticipated purchase, while his wife and fellow watch lover Nilly just happened to be wearing a green Submariner to match my own. Unfortunately, I was too caught up with the FPJ to…

MY WATCH STORY: Sebastian’s Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time (ref. 5524G)

If you like pilot’s watches, you need to head to the nearest airshow immediately. Irrespective of whether your eyeline lifts up to the craft in the air, or stays firmly on wrists, an airshow will give you more of a chance to spot aviation related watches than just about any other place. This setting – Avalon airshow, on the outskirts of Geelong – is where I spotted this dashing Patek Philippe 5524G, AKA the Calatrava Pilot Travel Time. It’s a watch that Felix and I hotly debated when it was released a couple of years ago. To recap, the topline quote was this: “The Patek Philippe Calatrava Pilot Travel Time is the watch that’s confusing the most people at Baselworld 2015. While the familiar Patek quality is there, that is pretty much the only thing about this watch people are associating with the name on the dial.” We wondered, not only then, but several times throughout the year, whether it would be worn by real pilots, or by mere earthbound Patek collectors? This question was answered emphatically by the watch’s owner, Sebastian, who is not only a pilot, but who is authorised to fly in formation – and has done so with the Australian…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 5, February 2017

The beginning of the year is always a great time here in Australia, as the weather starts to warm up and most of us get a few weeks off work. It’s also a time when 95 per cent of the population joins a new gym, and we make a bunch of other ridiculous new year’s resolutions, like ‘I won’t buy any watches this year’ and ‘I’ll spend less money on coffee’. Kicking off January in style, I made the (very long) drive down to the Alfa Romeo Portsea Polo. Whilst doing a touch of spotting in the Peroni marquee, I bumped into old friend Miles Wharton, who was sporting his recently acquired Rolex Day Date 40, which is very special indeed as it was his wedding watch (yes ladies, that IS a thing), as well as a satisfying purchase for Miles, as it had been on his list for a while. As work kicked off at a worrying pace, I made time to catch up with fellow Richmond local, Dion Link. A man of fine taste, he was wearing a lovely Cartier Santos 100 on a handsome blue strap, although with his 10th wedding anniversary rapidly approaching, he’s got his eyes on the…

MY WATCH STORY: Ben’s Seiko Sea Urchin

BenSeiko6Recently, Ben Gunsberger – friend of T+T, visual effects artist, photographer and co-founder of Babyology.com.au – posted this image on his Facebook feed without a caption. In watch circles, it doesn’t get much more intriguing than that, so we pestered him (over and over) until he agreed to fill us in on his Seiko. What’s the story of this watch? It’s the Seiko SNZF17K1 “Sea Urchin” on a Clockwork Synergy NATO strap. Ever since I became interested in mechanical watches, I’ve loved the Rolex Submariner, and I was toying with the idea of buying a 1976 model for my 40th birthday, in 2016. After lots of time spent looking and researching I came across the Seiko which is visually quite similar. There’s also a whole DIY community built around modding them, which is cool. I mentioned this to my dad, who’s also a watch guy, and he took it upon himself to buy me the watch as well as all the tools and information needed to properly look after it myself. It ended up being much more memorable than an old Rolex. I like having a mechanical watch that didn’t cost a fortune. I don’t stress about every scratch or scuff. I’ve yet to take it apart though. What…
