SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 12, July 2018 – A Heuer-heavy edition

This month was an interesting one, and, as you’ll see, jam-packed with one particular brand. I’ll put this Heuer-overload down to the fact I spent quite a bit of time with local car enthusiasts, who have a lot of time for the brand — especially their chronographs. Let’s kick things off. Local gent Charith recently picked up this Big Pilot, as a memento to mark winning a local boxing match, which he unfortunately lost. Charith has had his eye on the Big Pilot, having always loved the reference, and the stars aligned — letting him make this purchase. The Big Pilot, at 46mm, has quite the presence, and it’s not common to spot this brown dial limited edition on the streets. Later in the month, I made my way out to Elwood one crisp winter morning, for a Porsche event. As I was waiting for a coffee, young collector and fan of T+T, Brandon, revealed a pretty cool piece. He was wearing his 18th birthday present — a vintage Heuer ‘Viceroy’ Autavia. These old ‘Viceroys’ were a promotional watch, launched between Heuer and American cigarette company Viceroy, and were a special version of the Autavia — redeemable for $88 and the end flap from the…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @MrGrandSeiko – no prizes for guessing this guy’s favourite brand

Sydney-sider Daniel Yong (AKA @MrGrandSeik0) is a teacher by day, and Grand Seiko fanatic by night. When he’s not working, you might catch him in a random café in Sydney with either a cappuccino, espresso, or a glass of whisky (depending on his mood and time of day, of course), accompanied by good reading material. Hi Daniel, what’s your daily watch and why? It’s an Apple Watch … Just kidding, Andy! Although there’s nothing wrong with owning an Apple Watch, I believe one should own a piece of horology first. My daily wrist companion is my Grand Seiko SBGW031. It was the first “real” watch I purchased myself that spiralled my obsession with horology and, yes, Grand Seiko. I will cover why Grand Seiko later, but since purchasing it, I feel like it has grown into becoming both my comfort watch and the extra good luck charm I need when delivering an important presentation. Or quite simply, when a situation requires me at my best. Did I mention that it’s more versatile than you think? Really, it is. Just check out my Instagram page. What else is in your collection? Have you got a favourite? It’s no longer in my collection, but I loved…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @WatchPartsMotorCycles – a guy who bought a watch with gold bullion

Dan Tanenbaum is a father, husband, technology entrepreneur and artist. Dan works in the sports gambling industry and created a technology to facilitate stadium lotteries. Hi Dan, what’s your daily watch and why? I wouldn’t consider any of my watches a “daily” as all of them get wrist time. Currently, I’m wearing my white dialled Heuer Montreal, which I recently put on a period-correct white racing Heuer strap and I love the new look. What else is in your collection? Have you got a favourite? I have no ego in my collection and purchase whatever watch I find unique. I have a wide spectrum from Urwerk to Seiko. As far as a favourite, it’s probably my Rolex 6538, which has a pretty amazing story. Tell me about your 6538. Glad you asked … take a seat. When my wife was pregnant with twins I was convinced she was having two girls; I didn’t even have boys’ names picked. But when she gave birth to my two boys I told her I was going to mark the occasion and get each of them one of the most iconic watches of all time, in my eyes. So I jumped on all the forums and told…

WHO TO FOLLOW: Expert watch polisher @BobKolican

Expert (self-taught) watch polisher Bob Kolican is definitely an account worth following. If not for his vintage knowledge, then to witness his refinishing skills. Also a huge vintage watch collector, Bob resides in Germany with his young family. Hey Bob, what’s your daily watch (if you have one) and why? I have no particular daily watch, I mostly wear the most recently polished piece I have, until the next is refinished. I own a lot of Rolex models, like white/pink/yellow gold Day-Dates, gold and steel Datejusts, Explorer Is and IIs (also a pre-Explorer), Submariners with and without date, hand-wound Daytonas, a pre-Daytona, Sea-Dweller, and some others. The list goes on … Aside from that, there’s also some Heuer, Enicar, Mido and Omega in the box. So, do you only collect vintage watches? I have a few Rolex ‘sporties’ with sapphire, in my collection, like the Submariner or ‘Zenith’ Daytona. I love the simplicity and the purpose of use of the old vintage Rolex watches. You look at the dial and there is nothing that could stress you. Nowadays there are functions and displays on some watches you will never need in life, and they could be very restless. The weirdest watch I have…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @Super.Corgi – a man with a love for Mickey (and friends)

Watch collecting can often lead people down increasingly specialised, niche paths. One such example is Loh AKA @Super.Corgi – a collector from Singapore. He lives with his wife, two grown-up kids, a corgi and a French bulldog. He also has a thing for Disney characters on watches … Hi mate, what’s your daily watch and why? I don’t have a fixed daily watch. Every morning I get up and pick a watch in my collection to wear. I try to give every watch some wrist time. What else is in your collection? Have you got a favourite? I own watches in various Disney characters. My most important piece is a Mickey Mouse Classic I bought for my wife. My personal favourite is the Mickey Sailor (Mariner/Navigator). When it comes to buying watches, the number one thing I look for is obtaining the best condition within my budget. I try to buy the best condition I can afford. How did you find yourself collecting Gérald Genta Disney watches? I first learned about Gérald Genta Disney watches around 1993 when my wife (then my girlfriend) took me to a retailer and told me she was saving to buy that watch with a big Mickey…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 11, June 2018

Is anyone else struggling with the fact that it’s June? I am, and this month’s Spotted is jam-packed with some crazy cool watches. Kicking things off, I started this month with ‘coffee and cars’ – and going in I was well aware that any combination of Heuer and Vintage Chronograph is always a winner amongst car enthusiasts. I quickly spotted this very interesting piece – a vintage Leonidas ‘Easy-Rider’. These Leonidas Easy-Riders have quite an interesting history and were introduced in the 1970s for a short period of time by Heuer, developed as an affordable model to battle the increasingly popular quartz watches coming out of Japan. For a more in-depth look at their history, check out Calibre 11’s ‘Ultimate Guide to the Heuer Easy-Rider’ (it’s very good). Later that morning, I spotted another icon on the wrist of @AutoReligion, who was wearing his Seiko PADI. Although owning a large collection of Swiss watches, like Rolex and Omega, its owner loved the classical design and robustness of the PADI. It’s his watch of choice for weekend activities and is also a nice reminder of the special place Japan holds in his heart. Later in the month, I found myself in…

WHO TO FOLLOW: Filmmaker, photographer, watch guy – @nicholask_la

Nicholas Alexander Kalikow is a producer, director, screenwriter and photographer. He loves being on set and working with talented people to make films and take photos. Hi Nicholas, what’s your daily watch and why? Right now it’s a Patek 5167A Aquanaut. I like it because most people don’t know what it is and I can wear it with jeans and a T-shirt or a tux. And a Rolex 16710 GMT II Pepsi. I think the Pepsi GMT is the coolest watch around and incredibly useful if you travel a lot or have business in multiple time zones (like I do). What else is in your collection? Have you got a favourite? I have a few Tudors, Heuers and Rolex watches from the ’50s to the early ’80s. Highlights include a Tudor Snowflake Sub, an Omega Speedy 321, and a Rolex 5513 and 1016 (both of which I bought before the prices shot up). Right now my favourites are my 1969 Rolex 1675 GMT and a Heuer 2446C Autavia GMT. How did you find yourself collecting watches? Do you remember your first piece, and do you still have it? Like many kids with dyslexia, I had a hard time learning my left…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @Tom.inslay – watch engraver and artist

Tom Inslay is your typical Aussie, with the obvious exception of being wholly consumed by the beautiful world of horology. He’s also got a few interesting talents … Hey Tom, we’ve been wondering — what do you actually do? I have been in the manufacturing industry my whole life, the past six years as a CNC Machinist for a multinational mining company which designs and manufactures niche equipment for hard rock mine sites. On the side, I also run my own business, primarily as a bespoke hand engraver, and now watch art. What’s your daily watch and why? My daily watch is a Blue Tudor Pelagos. For me it’s the perfect work watch: the titanium makes it light, the clasp makes it easily adjustable and comfortable, the ceramic bezel is durable, the lume is second to none. It’s also not a $20,000 watch that I am too afraid to mark and wear, yet it’s a nice enough watch that an enthusiast would enjoy to wear. What else is in your collection? Have you got a favourite? I also have a Rolex GMT-Master II 116710BLNR ‘Batman’, an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15400 Blue, and a Rolex Submariner 5513 (birth year 1988). Which one…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @Horonation

Self-described ‘WIS Globetrotter’, @Horonation likes to keep his identity secret — preferring the moniker ‘Mr X’. To say he’s serious about his watches would just about be the understatement of the year. Hey mate, what is your ‘daily watch’ and why? I rotate and wear all my watches. But I find it very comfortable wearing vintage Rolexes and white metal on a daily basis rather than wearing those dressy rose gold pieces. But no particular ‘daily beater’ for me. I wear my double tourbillon, Greubel Forsey, as much as I wear my other watches. Perhaps I usually select what I wear on my wrist to match my outfit of the day. How did your love of watches start? When did it escalate to the point you realised it was a serious addiction? I was first attracted to horology when my father-in-law bought me a piece. The visit to the watch retailer was an eye-opener as I didn’t know that the horology world was so vast. At that time I was only aware of two brands – Rolex and TAG Heuer as the most popular brands among Indonesians. Fuelled by my curiosity and eagerness to learn, I started reading about horology and joining local…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 10, May 2018 – the London Edition

I backed up Baselworld, with a solid stint in London, where — let me tell you — I did some serious watch spotting. So much spotting in fact, we had to split it out. Here we go! Kicking things off, in true British fashion, a London boutique-only edition Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. This is one of only 26, and belongs to my good friend Silas, from @A_Collected_Man. Silas had been on the lookout for one of these for a long time before finally snagging one. I could be wrong, but I believe this to be one of JLC’s most limited watches ever made. There’s really only one way to describe this watch: Stunning. As I settled into London, I caught up with Pat (@Mr.Cosmograph), who has a love for Rolex sports models (don’t we all), and a knack for beating those waitlists. His piece of choice for our coffee was his prized Daytona, which, with a ceramic bezel, looks as sharp as ever. Pat was pretty impressed by the Tudor Black Bay GMT and has already put his name down for one, preferring it to the Rolex ‘Pepsi’ GMT-Master II in steel, also released this year at Baselworld. Next up — @APKStyle and his Audemars Piguet…
