WHO TO FOLLOW: @VintageRolexMania

Lex Kittichoke is a Thai businessman with a love for family, travel, and a huge passion for vintage timepieces. You might know him on Instagram under the handle @VintageRolexMania. Hi Lex, what’s your daily watch and why? I don’t have a daily watch, I change my wristwatch every day. It brings me joy to see a different watch, and take the time to look at the dial and case under the loupe. To me, that’s the ultimate experience. What else is in your collection? Have you got a favourite? In case of watches collection, when I got new one whatever expensive or cheap, That’s means I fall in love with it. Not only Vintage Rolex, I love all watches that make me stunning, such as Omega, Patek or Seiko. What is it you love about vintage Rolex? About 15 years ago, whilst I was at the park with my family, I saw a foreigner wearing a nice patina’d ‘Red Sub’ (Rolex Submariner Reference 1680). He saw my Green Submariner (50th Anniversary ‘Kermit’) and showed me his watch. At that moment I fell in love and it was the exact moment I decided to change my collection to focus on vintage.…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @JDWDesign

J. David Weiss is Founder and ‘Arsonist/Alchemist of Creativity’ for Designova Creative + Assoc. Hi JD, for those who don’t know, who are you and what do you do? Initially, I dreamed of sculpting the shapes of amazing cars, but have ended up in a waterborne version of my dream, designing large custom yachts, but that has opened new doors and allowed me to collaborate with heroes of mine like Neil Ferrier and David Levy, working on other sundries, from insane custom furniture to vehicles for future movies that I’m not allowed to talk about! How do you like to unwind? Again, time with those people, often with a bit of golden Scottish liquid, and sometimes in unexpected corners of the world. The last year or so has had me in India, China, Iceland, about a third of the US states, lots of Europe, and repeated visits to the ‘Yacht Capital’ of the world, Monte Carlo. Often that unwinding will involve some form of transportation device, as that passion never really wanes. Mountain bikes on the east coast, cars in California, trains in India, and, of course, the big boats in Riviera-flavoured places. However, despite (or perhaps because of) all…

Spotted! By AG: Dispatch 9, April 2018 – the Baselworld edition

Wow, what a whirlwind past month. The Time + Tide team again found themselves in the centre of the madness that is Baselworld. This year the fair might’ve been smaller, but we were there in full force, all nine of us. In between what felt like never-ending appointments, I managed to do some spotting. Here’s what I saw. As I entered the fair, one of the first familiar faces and friends I saw was the mysterious @WatchesOfInstagram. The man behind the well-known watch Instagram account likes to keep a low profile. However, over the course of the fair, we caught up several times and discussed our favourites. It’s always hard to pick a favourite watch, especially during the fair, but for Mr WOI it was the new Nomos Glashütte Autobahn that stole his heart this year. I bumped into Robert Velasquez, otherwise known as @SpanishRob, midway through the fair, and he was wearing none other than his famous Patek Philippe Nautilus with a ‘Tiffany Dial’. Nicknamed the ‘Loved Patek’ (or #TheLovedPatek if you’re on Instagram), Rob is famous for enjoying his Nautilus, and not being scared to wear it. Having last seen his Nautilus back in New York three or so years…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @EnriqueMuyshondt

Enrique Muyshondt is the founder of Muyshondt Enterprises, a company that creates electric torches. He loves simple, vintage, analog things — cars, vinyl, cameras, and, of course, watches. Hi Enrique, tell me about your love affair with watches; do you remember when it started? I had a Timex with Indiglo when I was a kid, which would never come off my wrist — I’m a post-quartz-crisis guy. Over time I had more modern fare, Citizen Eco-Drive watches in particular, and eventually made my way to mechanical watches a few years ago, starting with a Seiko Sumo, and then it all went downhill from there! There’s a particular appeal for me in clean, elegant design that’s prevalent in many modern watch brands, and a specific fascination with a form of engineering taken to its furthest possible form in watches, F1 racing, and a few other fields. What is your daily watch, and why? It varies. Lately, a Mitsukoshi (Panda) Speedmaster, but the polar-dialled Rolex Explorer II, Omega Seamaster 300 (vintage re-issue) and others are also favourites from the larger brands. I’m a particular fan of the work from Halios and Oak & Oscar, in microbrands, as well. What does your collection look…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @TheKirkland (Jeremy Kirkland of Blamo!)

Editors note: This week’s Who To Follow is the result of a mild obsession Andy and I had with the Blamo! podcast, which, if you’re at all interested in the world of fashion, style and luxury, is jam-packed full of gold moments and on-point insight. Given that we’ve tapped out the first three seasons, we’re pretty happy season four is dropping on May 7. Until then, I’m going to go listen to the Jen Rubio episode on repeat.  Hi Jeremy, for those unfamiliar, who are you and what do you do? My name is Jeremy Kirkland, and I’m the host of the Blamo! Podcast. Tell us about Blamo! Blamo! is a weekly show featuring personalities and individuals in the fashion industry. I’ve been in the fashion and luxury industry for more than 10 years and have been lucky to have made some great friends along the way. Their stories are so inspiring and encouraging, and I wanted to find a platform to share those stories. How do you choose your interviewees? Initially, it started out as friends and colleagues I’ve had along the way. More recently, it’s evolved to feature entrepreneurs, creative directors and other people who are helping shape the…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 8, (a very late) March 2018

Editor’s note: Full disclosure, this one slipped past the keeper in those hectic pre-Basel days. So to all of you people eagerly awaiting your dose of Spotted! (I know you’re out there), I’m sorry. But you know what, it might be late, but it’s still great. And with that, over to Andy. My March ‘Spotted Dispatch’ is always a fun one. It feels like just yesterday I was adding the finishing touches this time last year, before boarding my flight to Europe, destined for Baselworld. Well, this year is no different! Very shortly I’ll be jetting off to do some international watch spotting, but for now, enjoy some solid watch spotting, which if you noticed the banner image, is a pretty special one! First up, I kicked off the month over coffee with a collector friend, Rich, who happened to be sporting one of my favourites. Rich was rocking one of the classics, an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (reference 15300), which he likes as it’s smaller than the current offering, the 15400. The 15300 was 39mm in diameter and discontinued in 2012, where it was superseded by the reference 15400 (41mm). For Rich, the Royal Oak is all about the…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @justinmfrost

This week’s Who to Follow is a little closer to home than usual. Justin Mastine-Frost has been writing for us on and off over the last few years, so we’re obviously fans. But his passion for the independent, the odd, and not to mention the colourful, means that we think he’s well worth a follow. Hey Justin, tell me about yourself.  Who I am is a loaded question. Canadian by birth, transplanted to New York City for a few years, and now I’m back in Canada. To run you through the brief history lesson, I’ve been a guitarist, a sales clerk, a photographer, a construction foreman, BMW mechanic, and a journalist in a variety of fields including automotive, travel, lifestyle and horology. At 34 years old, you can say I’ve worn a few hats over my lifetime. What do you love?  When you boil it right down, I love experience. I love food, I love travelling, I love meeting people and discovering their backstory — what brought them to where they are today. How do you unwind?  That very much depends on the options at hand. During the day-to-day grind, a good Netflix binge or an evening out with good…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @Y.Andre.Ch

Andre is a Sydney-based collector with a penchant for rare vintage chronographs. We find out more … Hi Andre, what’s your daily watch and why? I’m currently wearing my Rolex 6542 GMT as my daily watch. While wearing the very first Rolex GMT reference as an everyday watch sounds crazy to most people, it’s one of the most wearable watches in my collection. Most of my watches are from the 1940s-50s, so a lot of them are a lot more fragile than the Rolex. Especially the early 1940s watches that don’t have Incabloc (shock absorber), and are not water resistant, let alone waterproof. What else is in your collection, is there a favourite? I’m a multi-brand kind of guy because I love all watches. I have other brands in my collection, like Gallet, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Omega, but my orbit of existence is Universal Genève (UG), and my absolute favourite piece is an oversize stainless steel UG Tri-Compax ref 22536 circa 1944.   What’s that next piece you’re looking to buy? Vintage Longines chronograph with the legendary 13ZN movement. I’ve been waiting for the past two years for the “right” one to pop up; fingers crossed, 2018 is the year for it!…

WHO TO FOLLOW: @MissDateJust

Going by Marianne in real life, @MissDateJust is a twenty-something-year-old from Sweden, who loves travel, meeting new people, and watches (like, a lot). Hi Marianne, what’s your daily watch and why? I think my handle says it all, Andy — my Rolex Datejust 178274. It’s my daily watch because it’s versatile, it works great at the office and in my spare time. And it doesn’t draw too much attention to it due to it being midsized. It was the first real watch I got myself before I used to wear a watch every day. Nowadays, when I look down on my naked wrist, I get a panic attack thinking I lost my watch … I guess it’s the same feeling as losing your kid at a store. What else is in your collection? Have you got a favourite? I don’t have a big collection, yet. So, besides the Datejust, I have my newest love — a Patek Philippe Nautilus 3900. I couldn’t choose a favourite between my Datejust and Nautilus; I love them both, but in separate ways. I also have an old gold-plated Citizen Watch with a green croc strap that I got from my grandmother years ago. Sadly, it never…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 17, February 2018

Welcome to February or, as we like to call it, ‘that spacer between SIHH and Baselworld’. The T+T team is taking a quick breather to digest exactly what happened at SIHH, as we brace ourselves for a hectic upcoming trip to Basel. I kicked off this month with a trip to my tailor, Carl Navè, for a bit of a wardrobe refresh (Baselworld is just weeks away, after all). Carl was sporting some new wristwear — a recently acquired Oris Aquis, which was a 40th birthday present. He thought long and hard about the watch that would best suit his personality and, more importantly, his lifestyle. Carl was drawn in by the gorgeous gradient blue dial and the utilitarian design. It’s not exactly a design that jumps to mind when you think ‘tailor’, but Carl wasn’t looking for a refined dress watch but something a little more rugged and casual — which is much more his personal style. Carl consulted the entire T+T team, and we expected him to jump at the Oris Divers Sixty-Five; however, already owning a vintage Tissot Seastar, he was definitely after a modern piece. The Oris Aquis Date ticked all those boxes — and the rest is history.…
