Review – Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Panorama Date

When the first Senator Excellence model was unveiled in 2016, there was as much excitement about the aesthetic attributes of the watch as its brand new in-house movement. Part of Glashütte Original’s commitment to up the ante on quality and performance, the Senator Excellence line has fleshed out into a full collection, which includes the Panorama Date model that we will be looking at today. A handsome GO watch with the iconic date function, this watch is packed with contemporary design details that go a long way in dispelling the idea that this is “just another classic three-hand dress watch“.

Hands-on – Glashütte Original PanoMaticCounter XL

German watch manufacturer Glashütte Original has always done things its own way. Its watches are characterised by classic designs that invariably incorporate a quirky modern twist or two, appealing to connoisseurs and iconoclasts alike. Just look at the PanoGraph if you’re not sure what I mean. For whatever reason, however, Glashütte Original doesn’t always attract the same level of media attention as some of its peers, which means there are quite often hidden gems to discover. One such model is the PanoMaticCounter XL, which we’re taking a closer look at today.

Review – Glashütte Original PanoGraph – Redefining the Flyback Chronograph, the Saxon Way

With its asymmetric dials and large date windows, the Pano Collection has become a beacon of Glashütte Original’s solid Saxon identity – the PanoMaticLunar and the PanoReserve are the best-known examples of this utterly Saxon sense of design and mechanics. First released in 2002, the PanoGraph stood out from the crowd with its novel chronograph totaliser that dispensed with the traditional layout of sub-counters and proved that not all chronographs have to be hard-core sports athletes. A triumph of aesthetics and mechanics, we revisit the PanoGraph today and discover how an iconic Pano can take a complication on board without sacrificing an iota of style.

Buying Guide – Our Top 10 Moon Phase Watches for Women

The Moon phase function is the simplest and most prevalent astronomical complication. It is also one of the most attractive and bewitching of complications, a reminder of the beauty and mystery of our neighbouring satellite. Considered more of an aesthetic choice than a complication of intrinsic utility, moon phase watches have become a perennial favourite with their miniature recreations of the different phases of the Moon displayed in an aperture on the dial. So, take a look at our A-V Top Ten moon phase models and get ready to be moonstruck by their beauty – both superficial and mechanical – and in some cases, by their astronomical prices!

Review – Glashütte Original Sixties Annual Edition 39mm – The Temptation of the Green Dial

Just like any other luxury industry, the watchmaking world is driven by trends. After a massive invasion of blue dials – a predominant trend over the last five years – brands are now trying to find new directions. One of them, slowly inching its way into the limelight, is the colour green. And if blue was already a difficult colour, which could easily result in a plain, boring watch, green is even more complex to master. Few have succeeded but one truly great example has been presented by Glashütte Original, with the Sixties 2018 Annual Editions. Comprising two models, including one with a larger case and a Panorama Date, it is the simplest of the two that caught my eye. Let’s look at it in detail.

Women’s Watch Wednesday – Glashütte Original PanoMatic Luna Dressed in Red – Adding a Feminine Touch to German Watchmaking

Introduced in 2011, the ladies’ PanoMatic Luna introduced two complications into the brand’s reduced line-up of women’s watches. The complications, a hallmark Glashütte Original Panorama big date display and a moon phase function, already featured on the men’s elegant PanoMatic Luna line, were interpreted in a more feminine key. A moon phase function is always a good excuse to introduce some poetry onto the dial of the watch and the ladies’ PanoMatic Luna has been interpreted with dreamy mother-of-pearl dials and a sprinkling of diamonds. To celebrate the International Day of the Kiss on 6 July 2018, the PanoMatic Luna is revisited in rubies, diamonds and a white mother-of-pearl dial in a limited edition of 50 pieces. Unlike the simpler Pavonina collection for women with its quartz movement, the ladies’ PanoMatic Luna features a Glashütte manufactory automatic calibre with the excellent finishes we associate with the Saxon brand.
