Hands-on – The Complex Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite Now in Steel

The vast majority of people are comfortable with watches simply displaying hours and minutes but multiple time-zone watches are (and we can tell thanks to our own experience) useful for globetrotters or those who need to keep track of time in different countries. With the Senator Cosmopolite, Glashütte Original’s take on the complication is packed with a unique set of features, making for a highly functional and original travel watch. Initially launched in gold in 2015, its sophisticated mechanism is now cased in steel – thus more accessible (or, at least, less expensive).

Auction – 10 Highlights of the Upcoming 97th Dr Crott Auction

We only cover watch auctions occasionally, and, as editor-in-chief, I’m well aware of this void in our coverage of the world of watches. So, while we’re looking for someone to cover auctions and vintage timepieces for MONOCHROME (yes, we’re hiring), I’m taking a look at the upcoming 97th Dr Crott Auction. Flipping through the pages of the Dr Crott auction catalogue always put a huge smile on my face; so many horological goodies, so many beautiful, rare, impressive and desirable pieces. Today I’m sharing ten highlights of the upcoming auction, and tomorrow some more…

Hands-on – The Contemporary Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition

For the last few years, German watch manufacturer, Glashütte Original, has been on a mission to appeal to a younger, hipper audience, and it seems to be working. Best known for its restrained, classic aesthetic (very stereotypical German, in other words), the brand has made a concerted effort to inject some colour and personality into its various line-ups. Some of my recent favourites include the Sixties Iconic Square collection, with five distinctively colourful dials, the sporty-looking Senator Chronograph Panorama Date in steel and the recent modern, yet classic, additions to the Senator Excellence collection. Now, there’s another new model to add to that list; the Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition.

Buying Guide – The Best GMT/Traveller’s Watches Introduced at Baselworld 2018

GMT Watches… How not to look at this specific category when the star of the show this year, at Baselworld 2018, featured such a complication. You name it: the Rolex GMT Pepsi Steel. Yet, that was not the only Traveller’s watch to be introduced during the fair. In fact, we’ve seen some pretty interesting new offers. Here are 7 very different watches, from an elegant Patek to an ultra-robust Oris, but all with the same purpose: displaying multiple time-zones.

Baselworld 2018 – Glashütte Original Adds New Dials and Casual Styles To The Senator Excellence Collection

At Baselworld 2016, Glashütte Original introduced a full new Senator collection named Excellence. Originally comprising no less than 4 different versions (time-only, tima-and-date, date-and-moon and perpetual calendar), it was only available with a classic design – Roman numerals and blued hands. For Baselworld 2018, the Saxon brand adds some casualness to two of the versions. Here are the Senator Excellence Panorama Date and Date and Moon with new dials and 42mm steel cases.

Baselworld 2018 – Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition

For quite some years already, Glashütte Original is working hard to bring a more contemporary feel to its usual German design. Known for being one of the very best watchmakers in the region, the brand was clearly on the conservative side for decades. New collections are bringing a younger and more modern taste to these Teutonic pieces, such as the Senator Chronograph “The Capital Edition” or the casual 3-hand Senator Excellence. For Baselworld 2018, we have a new example of this strategy, with the Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar Limited Edition.

Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph “The Capital Edition”

For a couple of years already, Glashütte Original has been the official partner of the “Berlinale” (the Berlin Film Festival… which led us to create a movie together with the brand). Just a few hours ahead before the opening of the festival, the Saxon brand treats us with a new watch, a dedicated limited edition based on the superb Senator Chronograph Panorama Date. Surprisingly colourful and inspired by the vibrant German capital, please meet the Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph “The Capital Edition”.

Pre-Baselworld 2018 – The Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite now in Steel

In 2015, Glashütte Original introduced the Senator Cosmopolite, a complex yet visually clean watch (at least once you know all the functions that are packed into this piece). Based on the most advanced watch the brand ever created – the 2012 Grande Cosmopolite Tourbillon – it is capable to indicate the time in no less than 36 time-zones. First presented in gold (white or red), the Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite will be officially launched at Baselworld 2018 in a more affordable and less formal version in stainless steel and with Arabic numerals.

Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase in Full Steel

As you well know, dear reader, we manage to get our hands on an enviable number of incredible timepieces here at MONOCHROME. Some, like the stunning Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance with guilloché dial by Kari Voutilainen, make their presence immediately felt, whilst others, like the Tudor Heritage Black Bay steel, are decidedly more understated, although no less appealing. Today, we are getting hands on with a watch that falls decidedly in this latter category, the Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase in full steel.
