The changing reality of wearing a watch in New York City

It’s a Saturday morning in New York City. For years, I’ve enjoyed the comfort and privacy of driving around the city as my form of transportation. But this Saturday I want to avoid having to pay the prices of a parking garage. So for the first time in what feels like forever, I’m about to … Continued

INTRODUCING: The Grand Seiko SBGJ269 ‘Pink Flannel’

In the interest of journalistic integrity I have to admit my biases, and I am obsessed with pink. My hair has been pink for the best part of five years, I own vast amounts of pink clothes, and yet I don’t own a pink watch. I was incredibly close to buying a Grand Seiko SPGJ249, … Continued

The new Grand Seiko SLGH013 means the 9SA5 x 44GS case combo has arrived in standard production

Grand Seiko SLGH013Don’t get me wrong. The Evolution 9 case geometry has a stellar aesthetic. But when we first saw Grand Seiko’s innovative and beautiful 9SA5 hi-beat calibre in a case other than the Evolution 9 case, the classic and iconic 44GS case it was found in for their limited edition SLGH009, I immediately knew I wanted … Continued

The Collector’s Series – Meet @so.frech, Our First Collector Talking Grand Seiko

For the first time in our Collector’s Series we talk about a Grand Seiko and we do this with Austria-based collector who can be found as @so.frech on Instagram. Grand used to be JDM (Japan Domestic Market) only and only opened up to customers from outside Japan since 2010. Although it’s not a young brand, for people outside Japan, Grand Seiko remained unknown. By now the brand is pretty well established among its peers and here on MONOCHROME we are always highly enthusiastic when we’re talking about Grand Seiko. And not only because of the Zaratsu polishing technique – an ancient method to polished Samurai swords – that results is stupendously good finished cases and hands. We will be talking with @so.frech about his Grand Seiko Spring Drive SBGA083.
