Spotted – Hans Dieter Pötsch, Chairman of Porsche SE, with IWC and Omega

For our latest instalment of “Spotted”, we are featuring Han Dieter Pötsch. Pötsch is the Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche Automobil Holding SE. And on his wrist are watches that are linked to the cars he produces or to the world of motor racing (surprisingly…), by Omega and IWC/Porsche Design. Porsche SE is […]

Hands-on – IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Chronograph Bucherer BLUE

The Portugieser Chronograph by IWC Schaffhausen needs little to no introduction. It is one of those classic watches that every collector will encounter, one day or another. For over 20 years, it remained practically unchanged, with the exception of variations on the dial. The model we present today is yet another of these variations… and […]

Introducing – IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Edition Right-Hander

Because 90% of the population is right-handed, there’s a convention that watches have to be worn on the left wrist… And that explains why the crown is positioned at 3 o’clock (on most watches, of course). There are exceptions to the rule, though, with so-called “right-hander” or “lefty” watches. Not so common, practical for left-handers […]

Introducing – IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser Chronograph Bucherer BLUE

On one side you have IWC and its signature, classic chronograph, the Portugieser 3714. This watch, as we’ve explained in this in-depth review, is a modern icon, practically unchanged since its introduction in the late-1990s. A perfect definition of a classic. On the other side, you have Bucherer, possibly the world’s largest watch retailer, known for its blue-themed special editions – usually very well executed. And when you mix the two, you get the new IWC Portugieser Chronograph Bucherer BLUE IW371492 – and yes, it is one superb version of this watch.

Introducing – IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition Racing Green

Do we even need to introduce the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph anymore…? This watch certainly is amongst the most iconic pieces manufactured by the Schaffhausen-based brand and, in its modern version, sums up years of slow evolution of the Pilot’s Watch concept at IWC. Usually seen in black with a utilitarian look (under the ref. […]

Introducing – IWC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month Now In Titanium

In 2016, when IWC decided to revamp its iconic Ingenieur collection, this came as a surprise. Gone was the robust “Genta-esque” case, the brand came back to the original design of the 1960s models. Among the inaugural models were some 3-hands watches and mostly some chronographs. And on top of the range was the complex Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month, combining a QP and a flyback chronograph. This watch, available until now only in gold with a white dial, comes today in a new, lighter, more casual version with a grey dial and titanium case under ref. IW381802.

Hands-on – IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert”

Since 2007, IWC has been producing a special series of watches designed to meet the demanding needs of elite jet pilots. Established as an independent collection within the IWC Pilot’s Watch family in 2012, the TOP GUN series has become renowned for its use of hi-tech materials and stealth, military-inspired styling. IWC introduced a total of four new TOP GUN models at SIHH 2019 this year. We’ve already gotten hands-on with the impressively technical Double Chronograph TOP GUN Ceratanium, as well as the practical Automatic TOP GUN. Now, it’s time to turn our attention to the slightly more unusual Chronograph TOP GUN Edition “Mojave Desert” (Ref. IW389103) – because it is objectively unusual.

Hands-on – IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Edition “Rodeo Drive”

2019 has been earmarked as the year of Pilot’s Watches at IWC.  This has not translated into a complete overhaul of the collection (something that we applaud, as we think it is important to keep the classical models intact) but with the introduction of new models in sub-collections – mainly TOP GUN and Spitfire. Apart from all the […]

Recap – MONOCHROME’s Top 10 Watches of the SIHH 2019

Now that the SIHH 2019 is over, it is time to sit down and to take a closer look at the dozens of watches that have been introduced. Overall, it has been a good year in terms of novelties – probably not the best edition ever, but still, there were some pretty interesting things to see, especially in the field of complication. This also means that the “entry-level” or “affordable” categories have been slightly forgotten by some brands. After all, SIHH means Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie. Thus, you won’t be surprised to see that our selection of the 10 best watches of the show is quite “high-end” focused.
