“With the new Da Vinci collection, IWC Schaffhausen has returned to the round case that was so successfully establishedvby the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar in 1985. It meansvwe are bidding farewell to the tonneau case and reaffirmingvour commitment to the classic proportions the brandvstands for,” …
A Nobel prize laureate wrote in 1964 that, “The times they are a-changin’.”
It is now 2017, and the locus of the changes in the horological world is a company known as Compagnie Financière Richemont SA. And there are a lot of changes.
As we’ve seen yesterday, the story behind the IWC Da Vinci has been eventful and longer than many thought. If the first edition dates back 1969, it’s really in 1985 that the Da Vinci obtained the recognition we know today, with one iconic version, the Ref. 3750 Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, conceived in the mind of genius Kurt Klaus. For 2017, there’s a new Da Vinci collection, which takes inspiration in that vintage model. And this might be the main reason why we heard many collectors praising one edition in particular, the one we believe to be the cornerstone of the 2017 range, the IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph in Steel.
In the 1990s, when my interest for mechanical watches sparked, one of the most complicated watches I’d ever seen was the IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar. I was fascinated by the fact that a mechanical timepiece could be ‘programmed’ to have a calendar that won’t need any corrections until a certain year. The Da Vinci […]
Over several decades of existence, the IWC Da Vinci has drastically evolved and has seen dozens of versions and style. Yet, even if this watch is certainly not as popular as the Portugeiser or the Big Pilot’s Watch, it has been the field for multiple innovations and milestones for the brand. Before we go hands-on with the latest version of the Da Vinci, in what we think is the key model of the 2017 collection, the Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, as a tribute to the famous 1985 watch created by legend Kurt Klaus, a short history of the IWC Da Vinci would be more than useful.
IWC offered a peek at the revamped Da Vinci before SIHH 2017, revealing a design decidedly more conventional than its predecessor. Large, round and classically styled, the new Da Vinci is attractive in the metal, with a diversity of models that are all comparatively reasonably priced, even the complicated models. All models feature swivelling lugs that help the […]
Another epic week ends. The mood was cautious this year at the Salon International de Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. The watches being presented were magnificently beautiful, but with a decidedly more commercial flavour. Prices seem to head toward more modest levels. And many entry level watches are being shown. Here is the Chief Editor’s…
In an interesting turn of events in 2017, IWC not only goes back to the original round (though updated) Da Vinci case, the brand also puts the emphasis squarely on women.
Like Brice already mentioned in our first Pre-SIHH 2017 coverage introducing the IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, IWC follows tradition and revamps an entire collection. We’ve seen such practice happening over the past 4 years and this year is no different. The Da Vinci collection gets revamped, and one of the new models is this IWC Da Vinci 40mm Automatic. Farewell to the tonneau case, welcome to the round case. Farewell to the modern interpretation of the Da Vinci, welcome to the inspired-by-the-original Da Vinci.
