7 of the best left-handed watches for long-suffering southpaws

Being a left-hander ain’t easy. While struggle might be overstating it slightly, there are constant daily reminders to the 10 per cent of the population who are southpaws that we are living in a right-handed world. Using a fountain pen is likely to result in an inky mess, and don’t get me started on scissors. Can openers require a flexibility warmup before use, and the number keys on the right side of a computer keyboard are pretty much useless to us. In recognition of the quotidian frustrations we deal with on a daily basis, today (Thursday the 13th for those who have lost track in lockdown) is International Left Handers Day, and we thought it was the perfect opportunity to take a closer look at the watches designed to be worn on the right wrist, of which there are some absolute classics. 1. Tudor Pelagos LHD This might be the most well-known left-handed watch in the watch community at the moment, and for good reason. It’s a great watch on so many levels. Featuring a 42mm titanium case, 500m of water resistance and Tudor’s own in-house caliber MT5612-LHD, this watch also has some great history behind it. From 1970, Tudor…

MICRO MONDAYS: 5 of our favourite Dan Henry watches, including the "spectacular dial" of the new 1937

Best Dan Henry watchesEditor’s note: We recently covered the launch of Dan Henry’s latest addition to his range, the Dan Henry 1937, a cleanly designed chronograph that looks back to some of the most iconic watches in the category. If we need any more proof that Dan’s watches are taken very seriously by all levels of enthusiasts, we need look no further than horological aficionado Mr Eric Wind’s personal Instagram account. He posted the gorgeous brushed silver dial version of the 1937 (see it below), with the caption, “Just a spectacular dial … Amazing to get a watch this beautiful for only $270.” So, the heat is back on. With that in mind, and the pressing need for everyone to get across the DH backstory (it’s a seriously great one that iterates in a clever website), we wanted to take a look back at a few of the other remarkably well designed pieces the brand has released over the years, as well as remind ourselves exactly who Dan Henry is as a watch brand.  To understand Dan Henry, the brand, we first need to understand the man behind it, none other than Dan Henry, himself. Dan Henry may well be one of the most prolific…

5 watches that look good on any strap

Brown cordovan leather watch strap, Omega SpeedmasterIt’s no secret that watches are expensive items. Whether it’s a $100 quartz Seiko or a $10,000 Rolex, you’re always trying to get the most for your money. By far the easiest way to eke out some extra value is to get a good collection of straps, so you can easily match your watch to certain occasions, or just change up its personality with some alternate colours. But not every watch is created equal. Certain hallmarks help timepieces be even more versatile than the rest. Uncomplicated designs, monochromatic themes, well shaped lugs and even-numbered lug widths will all ensure your watch is a veritable strap monster. It’s a great way to stop yourself from blowing more money on another watch, too. Here are 5 watches that look good on any strap.  Seiko SKX007 We’ll start with the original and the best. Seiko’s iconic 200m diver just begs to be customised, even if you’re determined to avoid the numerous third-party upgrades and modifications available. The stock Jubilee-style bracelet is attractive yet not well suited to a daily wearer. The stock rubber strap is supremely comfortable, but accordion-style folds can look somewhat ungainly if you’re doing anything other than diving. The result…

While some of their renowned references are Japanese Domestic Market only, with their sights on the American marketplace they have introduced some exquisite and artistic models exclusive to stores in the US (in both limited editions as well as regular production models). They truly are works of art in the medium of horological craft and require a keen eye and high degree of meticulousness to create. Here are 10 Grand Seiko models, sold only in the USA. To find your nearest Grand Seiko store, hit here.  The Kira-Zuri Collection Inspired by a Japanese painting technique called Kira-zuri, which translates to “sparkling painting”, the dials within this three-watch collection play spectacularly with the light that hits the dial. Commonly found in ukiyo-e paintings to create texture to the background of Kabuki actors, the inspired technique adds new depth to their dials ……

7 of the most expensive quartz watches you can buy in 2020

most expensive quartz watchesQuartz is the middle child of the watch industry. Born between the talented mechanical genius of the first-born and the innovative technology of the new smartwatch baby. But while it may have had less attention during critical developmental windows as a child – despite being wildly popular at birth – the quartz watch is hitting puberty in the same way Matthew Lewis (who played Neville Longbottom in Harry Potter) did, successfully finding its feet and getting some mojo of its own as a grown-up. So while quartz has typically been thought of as the cheap and cheerful sibling to the serious and expensive mechanical wristwatch, in 2020 there are some wonderful pieces of high-end quartz watchmaking that come with a price tag to match, both vintage and modern. Let’s take a look at a few very special examples. Citizen Caliber 0100 This is a watch that deserves more recognition. After debuting a solar-powered quartz movement that was accurate to within 1 second per year in a pocket watch in 2018, Citizen released the same movement in a wristwatch the following year. This watch has a laundry list of features that should go a long way to articulating why quartz watchmaking…

10 of the best digital watches you can buy in 2020, Part 2, including a cold Casio classic for 20 bucks

Digital watches remain an overlooked part of the watch world, forgotten by many who consider themselves to have ‘graduated’ to mechanical watches. But as we saw in Part 1 of this series where we looked at some of the best new releases in the last 12 months or so, there are a number of seriously cool and thoughtfully designed digital watches out there. So if you’re looking to mix things up in your collection that has previously focused on the mechanical side of horology, digital watches offer an injection of fun and variety into your collecting journey, without breaking the bank. Bulova Computron Bulova released this watch in 2019 to well-deserved praise, choosing to reissue a digital watch from a part in watchmaking history that isn’t much discussed. Based on the LCD/LED illuminated digital display watches of the 1970s, this piece revives the blocky case design and even requires the user to push the side button to display the time, just like the originals. While working on the Watch Buying Guide in the 2019 NOW Magazine, it was a no-brainer to include this fun reissue. Casio AE1200WHD-1A Featuring a world time map, analogue time display, 100m of water resistance, as well…

10 of the best digital watches you can buy in 2020, Part 1, including Braun, G-Shock, Hamilton and HD3

Digital watches may not be mechanical masterpieces that harken back to the romanticism of time-telling from a bygone era. But they’re an increasingly exciting corner of the hobby we love, and what they lack in pedigree and soul they make up for in almost boundless functionality. If you look down at your wrist right now and see a digital watch, in place of your usual ‘real’ watch, you’re a pragmatist as well as a poet, inspired by technology and its brilliant ability to democratise information and accuracy. We’ve chosen 10 new digital watches to bring to your attention that might just scratch that retro, or tech-geek, itch, starting with these five. Casio G-Shock GBD-H1000   G-Shock’s latest release is the near-ubiquitous brand’s first serious attempt at a digital timepiece with some real “smartwatch” features. As a result, not only is the GBD-H1000 built like a tank and robust enough to take literally whatever you can throw at it, but it’s also got myriad gadgets. Chief among this go-go-gadgetry is five different sensors, which include an optical sensor for measuring heart rate, an accelerometer that measures daily steps, a magnet that’s used as a digital compass, a pressure (altitude/barometric) sensor, and…

UPDATED: The complete list of watches James Bond wore on-screen

Editor’s note: This week we are taking a look at the brand new Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition that is set to hit screens on the wrist of Daniel Craig later this year, and we couldn’t help but think – how does it compare to the rest of the Bond watches? Fortunately, Nick Gould had put together a complete list of the watches James Bond has worn on-screen since the Ian Fleming books were translated onto the silver screen in 1962. We’ve also updated the list to include the most recent watch to be worn by Daniel Craig in his final appearance as 007, wearing the suavely understated titanium Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition that we are looking forward to seeing in action on Bond’s wrist very soon.  We all know James Bond, AKA 007, the suave British secret service agent who has been on missions all over the world. Throughout many of the films, he has always had a wristwatch to keep track of the time and, in some cases, help him get out of a jam. Today we take a look at the watches that have featured in the films. Dr. No – Rolex Submariner Reference 6538…

Kanye West is running for US President, here are 5 of his watches you might spot on the campaign trail

Kanye wins the 2020 US electionEarlier this week, Kanye West announced that he was going to run for President of the United States. That’s right, the 43-year-old rapper and streetwear designer married to Kim Kardashian says he will run in this year’s election that is set to play out in November. While it’s certainly a late announcement, and it isn’t even clear if he would be able to get his name on a ballot paper, this isn’t the first time Kanye has made his ambitions known in public.  In August 2015, at the MTV Music Video Awards, he closed out a stream-of-consciousness speech with, “as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president”, before dropping the microphone on the ground and walking off stage. While this definitely sparked discussion about how serious the statement was, Kanye added fuel to the fire in a lyric on his February 2016 album The Life of Pablo, where he rapped, “2020, I’ma run the whole election, yah!” In the last four years, Kanye has stayed a little more quiet on his desire to undertake the country’s top job, despite being seen publicly with Donald Trump and doubling down on his…

BATTLE ROYALE: The T+T Team list their favourite ever IWC Big Pilot references

The IWC Big Pilot collection is a pillar of the brand for a reason. The design is iconic and has remained unchanged for the best part of a century, the wrist presence is almost unparalleled, and the double-barrelled power reserve means you can take it off for a week without needing to reset the time. As a result of its significance within IWC, and its popularity on the wrists of collectors around the world, the Big Pilot has been expressed in countless different ways, from simple time-only references to perpetual calendars and tourbillons. With that in mind, I canvassed the team for their thoughts on the Big Pilot reference that was most dear to their heart, and arrived at some interesting answers. Nick Kenyon – IWC Big Pilot Heritage IW501004 There is an unsurprising boldness to the IWC Big Pilot Heritage that speaks to me loud and clear, harking back to a time when this type of watch was a crucial part of a pilot’s equipment. While the creamy off-white lume might whisper “fauxtina” into the ears of purists, the darker metal of the 46.2mm sandblasted titanium case complements it by matching a vintage-looking dial with a case that doesn’t…
