BATTLE ROYALE: The T+T Team list their favourite ever Grand Seiko dial (and, guess what, no Snowflakes)

Grand Seiko dialEditor’s note: If you’re wondering, Battle Royale is a relatively new segment where someone in the team nominates a collection or, in this case, a category – Grand Seiko dials – and we figuratively fight to the death for our favourite from said group until there is one opinion standing. Well, not really. That would be bloody, time-consuming, fairly hard to adjudicate and likely to upset HR. So, why don’t we just make our case for our pick, and then try to eviscerate each other’s (clearly poor) choices in comments? OK. We have news. We may be officially entering a new era of Grand Seiko appreciation, which we’re suggesting might be truncated to simply ‘P.S’. Because, we have just done a blind call out (no answers were known) to the team for everyone’s favourite current Grand Seiko dial. And where that might once have resulted in a veritable blizzard of Snowflakes – be they white, blue or off-white – this time the weather forecast is different. We have clouds and we have mountains, but the skies are crystal clear. So, we may be living in a ‘Post Snowflake’ world, where Grand Seiko has escaped the formidable shadow cast by one…

The New Blacklist Part 2: best of the new all-black watches from $315…

To recap: Zenith’s latest release, the uber stealthy Chronomaster Revival ‘Shadow’, has had us thinking about all the other great all-black timepieces that have been released in recent memory. The blacklist is an ever updating thing. So, we ran through some of our favourite models from the last little while. And after going through the list, we’re firmly of the opinion that blacked-out watches are just plain cooler. But in case you’re still not convinced, here are some more surreptitious stunners that have got the ninja aesthetic down pat. Luminox Bear Grylls Survival 3780 LAND Series Watch Bear Grylls is a certifiable wild man – the daredevil, survivalist and former British Special Forces soldier has done some of the craziest things ever captured on camera. So, when Grylls and American watchmaker Luminox teamed up for a collaborative series of timepieces, you just knew they were going to release something special. This particular model, the Survival 3780, looks positively menacing with its darkened CARBONOX case and dial, and if you’re after a tactical timepiece for rugged weekends, it doesn’t get much better than this. $1490 AUD. Tudor Black Bay Chrono Dark Made to celebrate Tudor’s partnership with New Zealand’s national rugby…

CELEBRITY WATCH DEATH MATCH: Kevin Hart Vs. Mark Wahlberg, a Patek and Rolex-only battle for the ages

This week’s CWDM is going to be controversial and it’s going to be subjective. There’s no way around it. These guys are Hollywood’s high-end horologists. Their collections are pure class. So get ready for some of the craziest watches on planet earth and prepare for opinions, because we all have them, and when it comes to this selection, I certainly have mine. It’s a throwdown for the ages. It’s Kevin Hart Vs. Mark Wahlberg in the biggest Celebrity Watch Death Match ever staged so far. Soundtrack suggestion: *Hey Siri, play Eye of the Tiger*. These two leviathans of the silver screen have got some of the rarest, most expensive watches on the planet, and there’s a common theme amongst almost all of them: diamonds. And these are legit drippy delights – ain’t no aftermarket timepieces in these collections. If it’s icy, it’s coming straight from the factory’s freezer. So buckle up, because things are about to go turbo… Dress watch to die for: Kevin Hart – Patek Philippe 6102R Woah … we’ve always known that Kevin Hart has got an insane assemblage of timepieces, but damn! This is a major flex for a dress watch. For those who don’t know, the…

Nick's 5 favourite new watches from the first quarter of 2020, including Audemars Piguet, Bulgari and H. Moser & Cie

2020 new watches nicks favouritesFor anyone reading this in April 2020, you’ll agree that it’s a strange time to be alive. Somehow, we have already seen three months of 2020, a point that has felt both incredibly fast and agonisingly slow to pass. As the interconnected health and economic crises continue to unfold around the world, the news cycle is dominated by Coronavirus as its impact is felt everywhere. Including the watch industry, with perhaps the peak announcement this last week that yet more pivotal brands would desert Baselworld after a farcical fallout from the first COVID-related cancellation. While some brands have halted production, and even halted the release of new watches in 2020, we have still seen evidence of the show going on, especially over the last few business days, when we actually had some releases. This new crop has certainly been thin, but it’s not without its genuinely exciting highlights. I wanted to wrap up my five favourites from the handful of watches that have been released so far, in what will hopefully be the beginning of an interesting (if quiet) year of watch releases. Grand Seiko SBGW258 in yellow gold (or SBGW257 in platinum) I know this isn’t one watch, but,…

CELEBRITY WATCH DEATH MATCH: John Mayer Vs. Ed Sheeran – the results

We’ve tallied up the results from last week’s CELEBRITY WATCH DEATH MATCH: John Mayer Vs. Ed Sheeran … there’s been an upset, and it’s a big one. I declared the bout, which was mostly a Patek vs Patek punch-up, a win for the longer in the tooth collector that is John Mayer. I marked him up the winner of three out of the four rounds, with Sheeran scoring just the one W. But you disagreed. The people have scored it differently and, in doing so, you’ve thrown this enterprise into complete disarray. Let’s see how this shocking revelation transpired: Dress watch to die for: Result: 27% for the 5971P-001 and 73% for the 1518 This should be a clue as to how the drama unfolded. I, rightly so, gave Mayer the win here with his famed 5971P-001 because A) it’s one of the best watches Patek has ever made and B) Sheeran had the audacity to wear one of the most important watches of the 20th century, his solid yellow gold 1518, on a goddamn Bund strap! That’s downright reprehensible. But despite pairing the first QP chronograph ever made with a disgusting leather belt that makes Sheeran look like a casual…

G-Shock are losing the plot, and we're loving it

G-coolest 2020 G-Shock watchesWe are only three months into 2020, and G-Shock have already been going hard — really hard. That’s right, not only have they released dozens of new watches across a range of different collections since the beginning of 2020, but many of those are pretty remarkable in their own right, some tracking heart rate or surf beach conditions, with others paying tribute to Kung fu legend Bruce Lee or representing streetwear label KITH. There is genuinely something for everyone, so let’s take a look at five of the coolest 2020 G-Shock watches. G-Shock X KITH GM-6900 Life is good when you look through rose gold tinted lenses. And that is exactly what we’re seeing with the new Casio G-Shock X KITH GM-6900, a collaboration between Casio and the streetwear retailer. The rose gold tone metal case is eye-catching, and it also has options to swap out different straps to easily match to your outfit. This one gets a rose gold medal. G-Shock GBD-H1000 This is an important watch in the G-Shock lineup because it would be making a play at the currently booming smartwatch market. That’s right, this watch has an optical heart rate sensor, a tri-axis accelerometer, pressure and…

Great 'Grams: The Fun Edition

Great 'GramsThis week in Great ‘Grams I wanted to focus on the more lighthearted side of the hobby, and probably the initial reason many of us became interested in horology — it’s fun. It’s fun to learn about a totally new version of a watch you thought you were familiar with, and it’s fun to ooh and aah at a gem-set masterpiece because for some reason even though you might never own it, there is a part of you that is glad it exists. It’s also a lot of fun to meet other passionate people through this hobby: the founders of brands who are working hard to bring something new and exciting to collectors, the retailers who have a smile on their face as they share something you didn’t know before, or the fellow collectors who share their passion with you over a beer after work. So while around the world there is a pervasive mood of fear, confusion and uncertainty, let’s take a moment to focus on the fun of this wonderfully deep rabbit-hole of a hobby. And remember that if we do bump into a brand founder, retailer or fellow enthusiast, it’s best to follow Price Charles’ lead by bowing…

Great 'Grams: The Independent Watchmakers Edition

independent watchmakersThis week on Great ‘Grams, it’s all about independent watchmakers, and taking a look at the many different ways these patrons of watchmaking go about their work. One such independent watchmaker is Franck Muller, a man whose factory is known for producing sveltely curved and complicated watches but was once something of a traditionalist. The remarkable creativity and design ingenuity saw him make one of the most remarkable watches in the collection of one of the most remarkable musicians of this generation, none other than Jay-Z. Franck Muller was the man responsible for an unusual Rolex perpetual calendar that is in Jay-Z’s collection, which was actually a Rolex Datejust in its original form that Mr Muller custom-built a perpetual calendar mechanism into. It’s a one-of-a-kind watch that shows both Jay-Z’s flamboyance and Franck Muller’s mechanical genius. @celebwatchspotter Attending Last Nights NBA Game with his Daughter. Rapper and Business Mogul; Jay-Z was spotted wearing his Piece Unique Vintage Rolex Datejust with a Perpetual Calendar which was created by Franck Muller ⌚️ The unique watch in question. Post Malone's insane watch collection Part 2: With Rockstar Ratings

Post Malone Watches Part TwoIf you missed out on the first instalment of us rating Post Malone’s watch collection, stop reading and hit this link right here. And, if you haven’t seen GQ’s latest On The Rocks video featuring Posty and his multimillion dollar assortment of timepieces, you can click here. Done that? OK great … let’s, as Malone would say, “get after it”. Patek Philippe Nautilus 5719/10G Rockstar Rating: 11/10 If the previous watches in his collection haven’t convinced you that Malone is getting serious about collecting timepieces, then take a look at his factory diamond-clad Patek Nautilus 5719/10G. This is, undeniably, one of the most baller watches on the planet. We’re talking solid 18k white gold case, full diamond pavé dial with baguette numerals, diamond baguette bezel and pavé bracelet with baguette centre links. This watch has a total of 1343 diamonds that equate to 18.73 carats … oh my goodness! Talk about going hard in the paint … this thing is pure, undiluted flex, and worth well over $600,000 AUD. Richard Mille RM27-01 Tourbillon “Rafael Nadal” Rockstar Rating: 12/10 If the Nautilus above wasn’t absurd enough, how about this incredibly rare Richard Mille RM27-01 “Rafael Nadal”? This isn’t any old Rafa…
