Review – Longines Avigation Type A-7 1935 – An Eccentric Pilot’s Chronograph from the Past

It’s quite common for brands to reissue watches from a bygone era, especially military and dive watches. The 2019 Rado Captain Cook Limited Edition, Seiko’s Prospex Diver 300m Hi-Beat SLA025 and Longines’ own Avigation BigEye are recent examples (and let’s not overlook the brand’s Legend Diver). The company’s Heritage collection pays homage to many more vintage pieces and the Avigation Type A-7 1935 is a quirky one with design elements to help pilots read the time and operate the chronograph quicker.

Only Watch 2019 – Ateliers de Monaco Tourbillon Oculus 1297

For the 2019 edition of the biennial fundraiser for research on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Ateliers de Monaco is presenting a tourbillon watch encased in an innovative forged carbon and gold case. Carbon fibre, gold and resin are mixed together, placed in a mould, pressed and then heated to form a block. The case is then machined to obtain the desired shape. The end result is a unique, contrasting, unpredictable marbling pattern.

Hands-on – Patek Philippe Aquanaut Jumbo 5168G with Khaki Green Dial

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Aquanaut in 2017, Patek Philippe presented the Jumbo Ref. 5168G in white gold with a larger diameter of 42.2mm, the most Jumbo size of this family to date and the first one to be housed in a white gold case. The fashionable blue dial of the 2017 model now has a sibling with a cool khaki green dial and matching “tropical” rubber strap. In essence, the exact same watch as the 2017 model with a green strap and dial, the khaki green dial adds a safari/adventure/military mood to the watch underlining its mission as Patek’s everyday sports watch.
