Five Things I learned When Visiting Seiko in Japan

To most of us Switzerland is the centre of the world, when it comes to watches. The “Swiss Made” sub-title seems to be the best way for brands to make their watches more appealing, however that’s certainly debatable these days. Still, Switzerland is known for precision, fine mechanics and cleanness. Germany is also known for precision, cleanness and fine mechanics, and they also manufacture some very nice watches! Together with the Swiss, the Germans serve to an ever growing clientele who are interested in mechanical wrist watches. And that’s when you realise that there’s another country, on the other side of our globe, that is known for exactly the same qualifications: cleanness, precision and fine mechanics. I’m talking about Japan. Already in 1881 Kintaro Hattori started making watches, and today the company is led by his great grandson Shinji Hattori. Now that’s a proper family business! Recently I had the distinct pleasure of visiting several Seiko manufactures in Japan, and I remained awestruck. Later more about this trip, however we’re going to start with five things I learned about Seiko.

Created in 2012 by our colleagues of Fratello Watches, this must not be sued up to a single tag for social media but more as the rallying cry of all Speedmaster passionates (and, yes, we’re amongst them). To mark this great achievement – which definitely serves Omega as a whole – the brand is proud to introduced a 2,012 pieces limited edition with several unique features, inspired by a 1978 Vintage “Alaska Project” edition, the Omega Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday Limited Edition.

Pre-Baselworld 2017 – Slim d’Hermès Quantième Perpétuel Platine

Clean, inspired, well-powered, coming from an old Maison, which at first was not that inclined in doing watches, but that managed with the time to be respected, the Slim d’Hermès was a refreshing surprise when introduced. Its style is undoubtedly elegant and sleek, while sharing the codes of this famous brand. The best came from a superb ultra-thin movement with micro-rotor, which could even be fitted with a complex perpetual calendar mechanism. For the 2017 edition of Baselworld, the latter comes in a new variation, the Slim d’Hermès Quantième Perpétuel Platine / Blue dial.

Introducing – TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 01 Full Black Matt Ceramic

Most of watch lovers might know that in a few days will be the first major watch event of the year, the SIHH 2017. On the sidelines of this massive event, some other brands, traditionally exposing at the Baselworld, are also benefiting from the traffic of journalists, collectors and retailers that the SIHH can drain. One of them is not what you can call small: TAG Heuer. In order to open the festivities of the Geneva Watch Fair 2017 (Hublot and Zenith, both part of the same group, will also expose there), here is the first novelty introduced, the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer 01 Full Black Matt Ceramic.

Classical Elegance – Why The Tudor Style 41mm With Fluted Bezel Should Be Considered?

In the world of watches, there’s a certain way of categorizing, and this usually refers to two main types of timepieces: sports watches and dress watches. Well, it is kind of short-sighted to split this way. There’s another category that sits right in the middle, which is often forgotten by watch journalists (us included), however watches that represent an impressive part of the sales: the all-rounder watch, the casual pieces which can be worn in every situation. And in that category, Tudor introduced a watch this year that will perfectly do the job, and even more than that: the Tudor Style 41mm With Fluted Bezel.

Watches and Formula 1 – Episode 4 – TAG Heuer & Red Bull Racing, This Season’s BIG Surprise!

Let’s be honest, this past season of Formula 1 was not the most exciting between the usual suspects up front, just like the last three seasons have basically seen one team dominate the whole year. The battle within that team however was particularly exciting, right down to the final meters of the final lap of the final race. Amidst all that internal drama however a few teams and driver’s still managed to steal the absolute show! The talk of the town and the team and driver on everyone’s mind: Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen! This young Dutchman surprised everyone by pulling off a seemingly impossible achievement; becoming the youngest-ever Grand Prix winner. Along with his teammate, he was the only driver outside of Mercedes this season to clinch a victory, doing things on the track that no one has ever seen before! All of that is here to remind us about the partnership that goes along: TAG Heuer and Red Bull Racing – and the long history of Heuer into F1 timekeeping.

Hands-On – Oris Divers Sixty-Five Silver Dial (And Why A Bright Dial Diver Can Also Work)

In a recent piece of news, Oris announced a new iteration for the 42mm Divers Sixty-Five. While this model already exists in blue or green, it now comes with a rather unexpected dial, which even if strongly playing on the usual vintage theme of the collection (and maybe even more now) is featuring a silver color, something rather unusual for a dive watch. Well, this Oris Divers Sixty-Five Silver Dial was clearly requiring to be seen in the metal (no press photo can give credits to a watch), something we did during the brand’s pre-Baselworld Preview where we already saw the Oris Altimeter Rega Limited Edition. And believe us, it was necessary.

Review – Creux Automatiq, An Accessible Option For A Stylish Luxury Sports Watch

One of the major trends for 2016 has been the arrival of new-comers on the market – new brands, created from scratch, mainly driven by crowd-funding processes (see all these affordable “Kickstarter” campaigns, with some of them showing highly interesting projects). This trend will most definitely continue in 2017, believe us. However, most of these new projects are based on affordable, no-Swiss-Made watches – something that we, here, not necessarily dislike but a bit of good-old Helvetic quality is always welcomed. Playing on the Luxury Sports Watch concept, here is the Creux Automatiq Watch, a Swiss-Made, qualitative, yet affordable option to certain well-known luxury watches you might have in mind.

The Nine Reviews You Loved Most in 2016 On Monochrome-Watches

Like we always say, Reviews are crucial for us, at Monochrome-Watches – and for two main reasons. First of all, in order to bring you the best possible stories and the most objective opinions, we need to have some proper wrist-time with the watches. It’s no debate here: wearing the watch and experiencing it for a while, as if we were owning it, is mandatory. It is our editorial philosophy. Second, as watch journalist, we believe that our reviews will influence your choices and for that reason, we think that you also need these reviews to make the most informed purchases. This is why, to close 2016, instead of showing you our most read stories, we’d like to show you the nine reviews you loved most this year on Monochrome-Watches (based on page-views and reactions).
