Boxer Amir Khan’s son gets £30,000 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona as a first birthday present

Some champions refuse to wear their hard-earned Rolex through staunch working-class pride – like MMA fighter Michael Bisping in our story here. But British boxer Amir Khan is a man of style and hardly shy of wrist. And why not start the “taking care of it for the next generation” sentiment literally by getting your one-year-old son not only one of the best sports chronographs on the market, but a damn good investment to boot, in the form of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. On point indeed! And judging by the Instagram shot at his account @amirkingkhan, this is none other than the elusive grey dial 40mm white gold version with a retail price of $55,550 AUD. Whether the former light-welterweight world boxing champion had to threaten his AD with his famous right hook, we’ll never know, but to get one of these babies is a seriously difficult task. You can read the full story on Watchpro here, but first I’ll give you my theory as to why this baby boy was so lucky on his first Birthday. You see I’ve got a hunch that Khan, despite his standing in the world of sports,  considered the waiting lists for this Daytona…

6 impressive quartz watches released in 2020, including Grand Seiko, Breitling and Bulova

best quartz watches of 2020It is no secret that quartz has its haters. It was only last week that we were in conversation with Roger Smith, who reminded us that George Daniels himself used to pooh pooh quartz, saying “why would you buy something that did kamikaze every three years?” But others, equally informed within the community, will attest to its worth and place. While quartz does not necessarily have the same sense of tradition and heritage as mechanical watches, it should not be disqualified or discounted as its own art form. Not all quartz is created equal, and brands work very hard to hone the accuracy and reliability of their quartz movements – and even go so far as to elaborately decorate them in a manner similar to their mechanical peers. There is something to be said about a reliable wristwatch you can wear fearlessly. You don’t have to hold back on your golf or tennis swing, nor do you have to worry your watch is displaying the incorrect time. It can be a much more carefree experience, and to say the art of watchmaking is strictly refined to movements ignores the hours spent developing and finishing the cases in which they are…

Alec Baldwin's watch collection reveals a man of taste and versatility, inc. Bulgari, Breitling, Bremont and IWC

Alec Baldwin watchesAlec Baldwin is an American actor and comedian, best known for his roles in television and film. Baldwin starred as Jack Donaghy in the sitcom 30 Rock, for which he won two Emmys and three Golden Globes. He has starred in notable films, including Glengarry Glen Ross, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, The Departed and The Hunt for Red October. When it comes to timepieces, Baldwin has an eclectic collection from a few different brands. The first timepiece is a Bulgari Octo, in stainless steel, with a black dial on matching leather strap. Its distinctive octagonal-shaped case is instantly recognisable on the wrist and is a fantastic looking timepiece that goes well with casual and formal attire. The next watch is from Breitling and is completely different to the Bulgari. The Breitling that Baldwin owns is a 42mm stainless steel Superocean Heritage dive watch with mesh bracelet. The bracelet gives the watch a vintage retro vibe. This model pays tribute to the original model from 1957. Baldwin owns a chronograph from IWC. More specifically, the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition Galapagos Islands. It has a 45mm stainless case with a rubber coating and matching rubber strap. You can tell it is the Galapagos…

Drake shows us "Life is Good" with his custom Patek Philippe Nautilus designed by Louis Vuitton Artistic Director

custom Patek Philippe NautilusDrake recently took to Instagram to let us know about his latest watch acquisition — a fully custom Patek Philippe Nautilus Annual Calendar Ref. 5726 that had been black DLC-coated and gem-set with dozens of emeralds. While Drake is well known for his love of the Genevan firm, this watch was special for a couple of reasons. Firstly, he posted the image of the watch only hours after fellow rapper Future released his latest track, Life is Good, which Drake features heavily on. In the song, Drake drops a hint about the timepiece he is about to show-off on Instagram, rapping, “Virgil got that Patek on my wrist goin’ nuts” and “Virgil got the Patek on my wrist doin’ front flips.” It doesn’t take a genius to work out he is referring to: Virgil Abloh, the CEO of Off-White and current Menswear Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton, who appears to have designed the watch for Drake. Captioning the post, Drake wrote: “New designer you guys probably have no idea what’s going on in the scene super underground all good I will put you on to Veerjil Ablow”.  Suffice to say this flaunted Drake’s watch game in a very big way. Not…

Top 6 watches of the 2020 Golden Globes

Watches of the 2020 Golden GlobesThe first major awards ceremony in 2020 for film and television, the 77th Annual Golden Globes, was held yesterday at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. I was keeping my eye out for any notable timepieces on the wrists of the attendees and I spotted a few of the best watches of the 2020 Golden Globes. Here are the top six: Ellen DeGeneres and her Patek Philippe Reference 5271P Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Ellen, as we know, is a mega collector of watches with a mixture of modern and vintages pieces from Rolex and Patek Philippe.  Ellen received the Carol Burnett Award and on her wrist was the Patek Philippe Reference 5271P Perpetual Calendar Chronograph. She has owned the watch since 2018. In addition to the complications of a perpetual calendar and chronograph, the watch features 58 baguette diamonds on the lugs and bezel, and the folding clasp has 22 baguette diamonds. Taron Egerton and his Montblanc Star Legacy Automatic Taron Egerton took home the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy for his portrayal of Elton John in the bio-epic Rocketman. Egerton wore a Montblanc Star Legacy Automatic in stainless steel, featuring a white dial…

What is Dubai Watch Week, and should you go?

Dubai Watch WeekDubai Watch Week is in its fourth year, and is hitting a scale that should be making the other watch fairs around the world take notice. In the context of Baselworld being in some of the worst trouble it has experienced in its 100+ year history and SIHH (now called Watches & Wonders in 2020) losing the commitment of some of its largest brands, and both of the fairs changing their dates in an attempt to make them more convenient to attend (though this was cited as the reason for both Seiko and Grand Seiko pulling out of the 2020 fair), Dubai Watch Week is gaining significant traction and attention. But what exactly is Dubai Watch Week? Is it a trade show like Baselworld or SIHH, where new watches are released? And if it isn’t, what’s the point in going, and who is it for? Baselworld and SIHH have always traditionally been trade shows, where brands can meet with their retailers, retailers can place their orders for the year having seen the new watches, and members of the press can attend to offer coverage and commentary on latest releases. They aren’t designed for members of the public (SIHH was an…

RECOMMENDED READING: An interview with Daryn Schnipper

Recommended Reading: An interview with Daryn SchnipperA Collected Man recently interviewed Daryn Schnipper, and if you don’t know who she is … you really should. Schnipper has been working at Sotheby’s in New York since 1980, first as a watch expert, and now as Senior Vice President of the auction house and Chairman of the International Watch Division. What’s more, Schnipper has been responsible for selling some truly amazing timepieces over the years, not least the Henry Graves Supercomplication pocket watch, which she has sold not once, but twice, for $11 million and $24 million respectively. Schnipper also talks about how the horological landscape has changed so drastically in the last 40 years, and how the quartz crisis simultaneously almost killed the mechanical wristwatch industry, and in doing so, made wristwatches collectible for the first time. Anyway, it’s definitely worth a read, and you can do so by clicking this link.
