What Sealed The Deal – Andrio's Patek Philippe Aquanaut ref. 5167A-001

Patek Philippe 5168GWe were the stars of the show at the first ever Time+Tide event in Brisbane a few weeks back. That is, until Andrio turned up with his Patek Philippe Aquanaut. This watch has a way of winning the day, whenever it gets revealed from under a cuff.   I started my watch collections with Panerai. Big watches. I had 24 Panerais at one point in my life. Then I had a mass consolidation, and realised I was more around 40, a smaller size. When I tried on the Aquanaut it sat really well. It’s really well done. At certain angles, the dial gives you a different effect. It could be a matt black. It could be a silvery effect. It’s quite nice. I also had the Ref. 5065 in the past which is the predecessor of this, but the size of this one is quite perfect. The rubber strap is a big part of why I love it. You can wear it every day. Go to the beach. Overall it’s an excellent everyday watch. The clasp is another great thing. I like watches with clasps, they just feel safer and more secure. When I picked it up, I had a…

Why getting your Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso engraved is worth the wait

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso engravedThe Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is a paragon of the Art Deco dress watch style, delivering a clean and classic design that has remained the same for the best part of a hundred years. While most watches with a solid caseback offer ample space for an engraving, the Reverso offers more than most thanks to its beautifully designed ability to flip the watch dial over to face the wrist, exposing the caseback to the elements. As most will know, this ingenious technique for hiding the dial from the rest of the world was born on the polo fields of India, where players required a watch that could have its glass protected against errant mallets and balls. In this regard, there is an argument to be made that the Reverso was the first ever sports watch, but today it is firmly found on the dressier side of things, pairing nicely with a daily suit and tie. What has remained unchanged, however, is the both valuable and visible real estate of the caseback, offering a blank canvas for a masterpiece of engraving. The only thing left is the owner to decide what they want depicted. Hugh, a friend of Time+Tide, was in just such…

Jean-Claude Biver reveals "the most beautiful watch I have ever seen"

Jean-Claude BiverJean-Claude Biver is a horological superhero. The legendary watch entrepreneur brought Blancpain back to life, resuscitated Omega and turned Hublot into a super-brand for which LVMH paid almost half a billion dollars. As a result, he’s assembled a private watch collection that would do King Midas proud. Auction house Phillips understands the appeal, which is why they’ve launched a touring exhibition of Biver’s personal timepieces. After stints in Hong Kong and New York, the collection has now pitched up in London until the end of the month (details here). Speaking in a WatchAdvisor video (see below), Biver reveals some random highlights of his jaw-dropping collection. Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Reference 1518 “There are some pieces I bought for the history and then there are some pieces I bought for my eyes. For the beauty, the exceptional beauty! Like this 1518 in rose gold. When I see it now, it is just a miracle. I think it’s the most beautiful watch I have ever seen. I think that even today, now when I see it. The colour of the dial is just amazing.” Philippe Dufour Simplicity in Rose Gold “It’s important to support the independents. They’re bringing fresh air, they’re…

We asked you if the Zenith Defy was underrated, and this is what you said

A few days ago, we uploaded a photo of the Zenith Defy Classic Ref.95.9000.670/51.R790 and asked our 120,000 followers this question: “Is the Zenith Classic underrated?” The response was resoundingly confirmative, with many people opining that not only the Defy Classic but the Defy range in general was, more often than not, overlooked and it shouldn’t be, because it’s a great collection of timepieces. For example, @styleinternity wrote: “Think most of their lineup is underrated to be honest.” @modernthrills commented: “Totally underrated.” @dwwright55 concurred, writing: “So underrated.” As did @k_temae, who added: “For sure underrated! Price is very ‘soft’ regarding quality and look.” We also posited the same question on our Instagram stories with a poll asking if the Zenith Defy was “underrated” or “rated” and, once again, the sentiment was largely the same, with 64 per cent of the 2000 voters saying the collection was underrated. With all this in mind, and as fans of the Zenith Defy collection here at T+T ourselves, we thought we’d pick out three of our favourite iterations … enjoy. Zenith Defy Classic Ref.95.9000.670/51.R790 This probably should’ve been obvious to most of you, seeing as it’s the very watch that kicked off this topic. This…

What is it with Perth and Daytonas? Glenn explains his 'unusual' 116500LN in the days after Horology House scandal

The week before last, three members of the T+T team went on a national roadshow. Though, in reality, it was more of an airshow, considering we covered more than a lazy 10,000km in six days. The goal was to meet members of the Time+Tide Club in their own cities. It was a magical mystery tour — with the mysterious element being: would the venue still have a record of our booking? Would it be in any way suitable for showing watches? Would anyone turn up? What questions would they ask in the often ‘Town Hall’ style catch-up? Over the week, we met more than 200 club members, and heard probably as many stories about watches. It was great. Of course, the other big unknown was: what watches would they be wearing? Well, given the week Perth had had in the news, with a local YouTube personality being called out online for selling an inauthentic Rolex Daytona 116500LN, you could say I was on heightened alert when one appeared. But it wasn’t like any 116500LN I’d ever seen before. The ceramic bezel was unmistakeable. But so was the, uh, racing dial. To say that it was an awkward moment would be understating…

Crime or Sublime: Wearing jewellery with watches – the results

Wearing jewellery with watches debate resultsLast week, Luke Benedictus and James Robinson were engaged in a ferocious war of words at T+T HQ over whether or not wearing jewellery with watches was a crime or sublime. Benedictus didn’t see any issues with it, while Robinson believed the very notion to be simply abhorrent, despite having previously worn jewellery and a watch on the one wrist … the hypocrisy! Anyway, the two decided to settle their squabble by vigorously scribing their arguments, which you can read right here. Both parties were sure they were victorious in the field of literary battle, but there was only one way to really tell – by asking where you, the audience, stood on the matter. We posited the question “Wearing jewellery with watches: Crime or Sublime?” to you guys on Mr Zuckerberg’s two favourite social media properties, and this was the community’s critical response. On Facebook, the comments were mostly scathing: Doug wrote: “Crime. Hard enough preventing scratches on the watch as is.” Benjamin said: “When done properly it’s not a crime. However, 5 Cartier bracelets next to a Day-Date isn’t flexing, it’s just sh*t taste …” Dave simply stated: “Awful  ” Beau wrote: “The only thing that touches my watch…

Weekend watch spotting with JR – Ft. Oris, Omega & Rolex

When does the weekend technically start? Is it Friday arvo or does the clock have to strike 12am on Saturday morning? Reason I’m asking is because I spotted all my watches in this weekend’s instalment on Friday afternoon and, boy oh boy, were there some lookers … enjoy! John’s (@minutes_intime) Oris Big Crown Pointer Date with Red Dial You know that one watch friend you’ve got that’s always wearing something new on their wrist every time you catch up with them, without fail? For me, that’s John – the man’s collection is a revolving door of exciting timepieces, both new and old. One of his latest acquisitions is this Oris Big Crown Pointer Date with arresting burgundy maroon dial. The 40mm stunner oozes charm, and ticks all the boxes of a proper weekend wearer – vintage styling, check; fluffy suede leather band, check; playful dial with real personality, check – the Big Crown Pointer Date has got the lot. Well played, John. Gary’s Omega Speedmaster 1957 ‘Trilogy’ Gary had always wanted a Speedmaster, but he’d never found one that he 100 per cent gelled with … until Omega unveiled their stunning Speedmaster 1957 a few years back, as part of…

Actor Rodger Corser brings Ch.9 travel show Postcards into the Time+Tide office!

Rodger CorserWhether he’s playing a hard-partying surgeon in Doctor Doctor or a bewildered zombie in Glitch, Rodger Corser is a square-jawed fixture on Australian TV. But he’s also a serious watch guy. So when Channel 9 travel show Postcards asked him to pick his favourite Melbourne venues, we were humbled that he picked Time+Tide. “I’m part of the watch community Time+Tide Club,” he told host Shane Crawford. “I really liked the craftsmanship that goes into a watch and the fact they work for all budgets — you can have a great $500 watch or go all out with the big stuff.” Noting with justifiable horror that Shane wasn’t wearing a watch, Rodger then urged him to buy one of T+T’s new DOXA range. “They’re the brand for you,” he insisted. “They’re a little bit flashy, they’re robust, they’re cheeky and they’re colourful.” Rodger, if a role ever comes up as watch salesman, we reckon you’ll knock it out of the park. NB – Time+Tide does not sell used timepieces as stated in the clip.

RECOMMENDED WATCHING: Tyson Fury can't go without his Rolex Day-Date 40

Tyson “The Gypsy King” Fury is an interesting man … to say the least. And, as of last night, the Brit is once again the boxing Heavyweight Champion of the World, dominating Deontay Wilder for seven rounds before finishing the American with a ruthless onslaught that left Wilder’s corner with no choice but to throw in the towel. It was a stunning performance by Fury and firmly solidifies his place as one of the greatest boxers of this generation. On the eve of the fight, GQ Sports released a video on their YouTube channel – “10 Things Tyson Fury Can’t Live Without”. It’s a seven-and-a-bit minute glimpse into the inner-machinations of one of boxing’s most inimitable characters and it is nothing short of fascinating. Aside from the usual sponsor spruiking — in this case, some sort of electrolyte-infused water(?) and a bespoke shaver and moisturiser for men with bald heads — Fury professes, perhaps surprisingly, that he doesn’t go anywhere without his watch. The watch in question? A 60th Anniversary Rolex Day-Date 40 in solid 18k Everose gold with olive green dial, Ref.228235. Or, in other words, one of the nicest Rolex watches that money can buy. More surprising is that Fury…

Sunday Blues: 5 of the nicest blue dial watches money can buy

Blue dials … they are the quintessence of vogue right now in watch world. And, while the last 12 months has spawned many, many timepieces with the arresting colour aesthetic, these five watches in particular stand out as the nicest blue dial watches money can buy right now. BREGUET CLASSIQUE 5177 BLUE ENAMEL At first glance, the Breguet Classique 5177 Blue Enamel’s subtle details remain hidden. But this changes in a heartbeat, as you take it in with a longer view. The Grand Feu enamel dial is stunning. That almost goes without saying. But what really brings this piece to life are the minute and hour markers (look closely), the satisfyingly shaped date window (with expertly colour-matched date wheel) at 3 o’clock, and the ghost signature between six and centre. Ref No: 5177BB/2Y/9V6 / Case size: 38mm / Case material: White Gold / Movement: 777Q / Price: $30,400 H. MOSER & CIE. ENDEAVOUR BLUE LAGOON It is rare to see one of the industry’s most mercurial brands tapping into the current mass-market trends, but in the case of the H. Moser & Cie. Blue Lagoon that is exactly what’s happening. It seems the wealthiest watch collectors in the world are…
