Drake shows us "Life is Good" with his custom Patek Philippe Nautilus designed by Louis Vuitton Artistic Director
Drake recently took to Instagram to let us know about his latest watch acquisition — a fully custom Patek Philippe Nautilus Annual Calendar Ref. 5726 that had been black DLC-coated and gem-set with dozens of emeralds. While Drake is well known for his love of the Genevan firm, this watch was special for a couple of reasons. Firstly, he posted the image of the watch only hours after fellow rapper Future released his latest track, Life is Good, which Drake features heavily on. In the song, Drake drops a hint about the timepiece he is about to show-off on Instagram, rapping, “Virgil got that Patek on my wrist goin’ nuts” and “Virgil got the Patek on my wrist doin’ front flips.” It doesn’t take a genius to work out he is referring to: Virgil Abloh, the CEO of Off-White and current Menswear Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton, who appears to have designed the watch for Drake. Captioning the post, Drake wrote: “New designer you guys probably have no idea what’s going on in the scene super underground all good I will put you on to Veerjil Ablow”. Suffice to say this flaunted Drake’s watch game in a very big way. Not…

This weekend, I wore my Swatch Sistem51 Hodinkee Generation 1986 and went out in search of what other like-minded individuals had decided to attach to their wrist, and this is what I found out in the wild: Danny’s Tudor Black Bay GMT Danny has lusted after Rolex’s GMT-Master II Ref.126710BLRO ever since it was first unveiled at Baselworld 2018. There was just one problem with his desire for a “Pepsi” though … and I think we all know what it was. So, once it became apparent that his sugary sweet grail watch wasn’t going to be an option, Danny went in search of its Aspartame-equipped younger brother, the Tudor Black Bay GMT. Rather unfortunately, however, “Diet Pepsi”, as it’s come to be known, is an exceedingly hard timepiece to come by at your local AD as well. Luckily, though, while trawling Mr Zuckerberg’s increasingly popular marketplace one morning, Danny stumbled across a Tudor GMT that was just weeks old. What was even more amazing was that the chap who was selling it was just asking for the RRP, rather than trying to make a quick buck. Danny messaged the seller in earnest, and before the day was out, the Diet…
Editor’s note: The hunt for a new watch is, for many watch enthusiasts, a huge part of the collecting experience. It isn’t enough to simply buy a watch, but a watch must be searched for long and hard, with its eventual discovery making the acquisition all the more exciting. This is the story of Joseph and his hunt for an Omega Speedmaster Limited Edition. This is a tale of an Omega Speedmaster Limited Edition that was one of only 2998 pieces … seven months’ perfection, six years’ lust, three countries and two continents, and one hospital trip. The Omega Speedmaster is one to reckon with. Not only is it an iconic watch design, it’s also embedded in the history of watchmaking and its ties with NASA. The Speedmaster, or Speedy, has always been on my must-have watch list. The one I am talking about, however, I first noticed back in 2012/13. I had just graduated from Sydney University, and wanted to commemorate it with a watch. Regretfully, things happened as they always do, and I had to postpone my search at that time. The particular watch I am talking about is the FOIS (First Omega in Space). As chance would…
Lupin the Third, ever heard of it? We hadn’t either … that is, until Zenith made this, the A384 Revival Lupin The Third Edition. Turns out, Lupin The Third, or Lupin III as it’s otherwise known, is a Japanese manga cartoon created in 1967 by the doyen of the traditional Japanese art form, Monkey Punch. The cartoon follows the escapades of Arsène Lupin III, a master thief and grandson of fictional phantom thief Arsène Lupin. The manga cartoon was quickly adapted into an anime television series, which first aired in 1971 and subsequently catapulted the popular comic onto the international stage. Now I know what you’re thinking: “What’s this got to do with the watch Zenith has just unveiled?” Well, the protagonist, Arsène Lupin III, had a sidekick named Mr Daisuke Jigen, and in the first episode of the anime series, Jigen can be seen wearing a version of Zenith’s A384 — the first watch the Swiss marque ever produced to house the now prolific El Primero movement. Thing is, though, Zenith never actually made a A384 like the one seen in Lupin … it was fictitious, dreamt up by the artists working on the animated series. But, when Zenith unveiled…
Where to begin with Seiko in 2019? The Japanese watchmaker has been on a veritable roll for quite some time now, but for the last year of the decade, they really delivered. Whether it be the new Prospex LX Line Diver taking home the prestigious award for best Diver’s watch at GPHG 2019, a completely new Seiko 5 collection or the accomplished, refreshed Astron, Seiko really did introduce some amazing new timepieces, and here are five of the best: SEIKO SNR037 The Seiko SNR037 represents an exciting step for the brand, as it is the first time the Spring Drive movement has been available in the Presage collection. In a faithful expression of the Presage collection DNA, this Spring Drive-powered watch is a dress piece through and through, replete with white enamel dial and inky black Arabic numerals. At 40mm in diameter, it is not a vintage-inspired reissue however, and is a truly contemporary watch with truly contemporary technology powering it. Ref No: SNR037 / Case size: 40mm / Case material: Steel / Movement: 5R65 / Price: $6400 SEIKO SNR035J The Seiko SNR035J is the stealth bomber of wristwatches, offering a hi-tech Spring Drive 5R66 movement, power reserve indicator…
Editor’s note: Hot off the heels of their latest release with the Heritage Classic Chronograph 1946, we thought we’d take a look at another smash hit from Longines’ Heritage collection – the Longines Heritage 1945. Few watches unveiled in the last couple of years have nailed the vintage aesthetic quite like the 1945, and for good reason. Whether it be the brushed copper convex dial, blued steel handset or mid-tan nubuck leather strap, this watch just oozes antiquated charm. A few years ago, we went hands-on with the mid-century stunner, and these were our initial impressions. One of the highlights on our Baselworld calendar is seeing what heritage re-release Longines has cooked up, and whoo boy, have they pulled out all the stops in 2017 or what. You’re looking at the Heritage 1945, an absolutely on point interpretation of a mid-century dress watch. Based on a 1945 design called the Calatrava by collectors, this watch does everything right. Funnily enough it’s the exact watch that Sunflowerman illustrated as part of the Watercolour Watch project back in 2015. The 40mm steel case is simple, and not overly fussy, with a flat bezel just the right width and a slender-yet-functional crown. The mid-tan nubuck…
The topic of watch water resistance is a tried and true watch forum favourite, showing just how motivated watch enthusiasts are to keep their wristwatches running underwater. If it’s expressed in bar, metres or feet, anyone who has spent a few months salary on a new watch is understandably interested in keeping their watch away from the limits of the reported water resistance, just in case disaster should strike. What most of those watch owners don’t know, however, is there is a method to ensure the water resistance of their watch from the comfort of their own home. That’s right, DIY watch waterproofing. While this is certainly not something we can recommend as a Sunday afternoon activity, we are able to recommend the step-by-step guide as some Sunday afternoon reading, which you can find right here.
Editor’s note: One of Tudor’s lesser-known model ranges, the 1926 is an admirable everyday watch with a number of great benefits. For a start, it’s powered by a tried and true ETA movement, not one of Tudor’s in-house calibres. Why is that a good thing? Well, for a start, it keeps costs down, as evidenced in the price of the watch. Another positive about ETA movements, as I’m sure you’ve probably heard countless times before, is that they are nigh on bulletproof and easy to service. The 1926 is also a handsome and classically styled watch, ensuring that it offers a great amount of versatility. Late in 2018, we were fortunate enough to go hands-on with the 1926, and these were our thoughts. One of the more intriguing releases from Tudor this year — and one that didn’t get quite the attention it otherwise would have, thanks to the show-stealing GMT — was the classically styled 1926. Taking its name from the year the Tudor name was registered, it also owes some design cues to this golden era of style. Take, for example, the finely textured waffle dial, with the blued Arabic numerals interspersed with arrow-head markers. Lovely, but also…
It’s safe to say that 2019 was a good year for TAG Heuer, with the Swiss watchmaker celebrating 50 years of their iconically square Monaco wristwatch with four striking limited editions. It wasn’t just about the Monaco, however, as TAG also brought out some great new additions to their storied Carrera line-up as well as some elegant new ladies watches. We’d like to mention all the excellent new timepieces that were unveiled last year, but that would take quite some time. So, instead, here are our three favourite TAG Heuers of 2019: TAG HEUER MONACO 1989-1999 The third Monaco released to celebrate the model’s 50th anniversary honours the 1990s. A concrete-inspired dial (referencing the explosion of street culture during that decade) is brought to life by flashes of blue and red. The sub-dials, which had taken a voluptuous turn for the 1980s special edition, return to their boxier shape, but retain rounded corners. While significantly different from the original, and far grittier in appearance, this edition really brings the spirit of the 1969 right up to date.
