VIDEO: The Tudor Black Bay Chrono – what it’s really like on the wrist

Earlier this week we ran a thousand or so words on the Tudor Black Bay Chrono, along with some pretty crispy pics, which are – as the saying goes – easily worth another few thousand words. But in our ever more hectic lives, time becomes an increasingly precious commodity, which is why we’ve also put together this 90-second video review to give you a real sense of what the watch is *actually* like on the wrist, and in three dimensions. We also opted to show the leather bracelet version, which has a very different feel to the rivet style bracelet; more casual, more vintage. And while Tudor is no stranger to noise and chatter, the buzz around the BB Chrono has been louder than most. I don’t think this is a watch you should judge on paper alone — it’s really worth trying it on for yourself. And if that’s not practical, well, there’s always our video review…

HOW TO: Let your significant other know you’re buying a watch – 8 strategies for success

The reality is that watches are luxury goods, so the ‘need’ to buy them rarely occurs. That means for most, they naturally fall very low (some say too low) on life’s list of priorities, and most definitely do not out-rank things like kids, mortgages and school fees. And unless your partner shares your passion, I’d gamble and say they don’t think that your wrist darlings are as important as you think they are. So, the perennially thorny question is: “How do I buy this watch with my partner’s blessing?” Forget “Rolex or Omega?” or “Who’s in the holy trinity this week?” This is the biggest dilemma for watch lovers. And one that becomes especially important when you’ve got a burning desire to pull the trigger on a new piece. And what kind of friends would we be if we didn’t provide some friendly advice? The worst kind, that’s what. Word to the wise before reading on: you know your spouse better than we do, so pick the best method that works for you. 1 – It’s an investment, darling Telling your partner that a watch purchase will be an ‘investment’, is one of the more popular methods amongst collectors. EVENT: Patek Philippe Takes New York (and blows RedBar Group co-founder Adam Craniotes away in the process)

Editor’s Note: Sometimes it’s the first line of a story that grabs you, but in this case, it was the last. The very last sentence in fact. Adam Craniotes, co-founder of RedBar Group and longtime friend of Time+Tide (go on a virtual tour of NYC with the big man here, just don’t drive home afterwards, that Bloody Mary looks bloody strong) recently penned a review of the Patek Philippe: The Art of Watches Grand Exhibition and it concludes with these words: All in all, it’s hard to overstate just how incredible – and important – this exhibition is.  At a time when the industry is reeling from a worldwide economic downturn, buyer reluctance in the face of years of out of control price hikes, and indifference from a new generation of consumers, the Art of Watches Grand Exhibition makes a compelling case for traditional watchmaking as a relevant exercise to novices and seasoned collectors alike. The occasional tremors of FOMO (fear of missing out, on horological majesty) that had afflicted all in the T+T office since the exhibition was announced swelled in my chest to full blown, full body envy. I had it bad. The exhibition was incredible, important. So, damn. How could we transport…

LIST: 6 classic chronographs from $6k to $60k

Chronographs are amongst the most popular complications with collectors. Perhaps because people use them for important timing events in their daily lives or – more likely – they speak to the spirit of adventure and action that’s hard to resist. Whatever the reason, here are six that have stood the test of time. Omega Speedmaster Professional Any list of classic chronographs has to include the mighty Speedy. Sure, it might not be the most original option, but it’s been to the moon, people… the MOON. $6375 on steel TAG Heuer Autavia One of TAG Heuer’s mightiest chronos is the Autavia, which is back in fine form for 2017. If your taste in automobiles tends to preclude features like park assist and ABS, this could be for you. $6800 on steel Breitling Navitimer Rattrapante The Navi has been around since forever (or early 50s at least), but we haven’t seen a split-seconds version before. Turns out it was worth the wait. $14,900 Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph   Last year Vacheron Constantin revamped their sporty Overseas, giving the sharp and sporty collection a well-deserved upgrade. That famous bracelet is now even better than ever. $43,200 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona There’s not much to say about the new…

EDITOR’S PICK: How to impress a woman with your watch in 5 easy steps

Editor’s Note: Sure, your watch fam are super impressed with that sweet 5513 with all the trimmings you picked up for a song. Well done you. Regular people of the female persuasion? Not so much. Ceri drops some timeless truth bombs on how to make that wrist impression count.   Firstly, let’s not delude ourselves: your timepiece is going to impress more men than women. That’s a given. Unless of course it’s awful. If that’s the case, you’ll be slaying precisely no one – and also, how did you find your way to Time+Tide? However, there are a few ways you can maximise your chances of making an impression on the fairer sex with your choice of wristwear, at least a little. Listen carefully. Step 1: Choose something less obvious Less obvious than what? Less obvious than the one you’re most likely to choose, obviously. Because even though that un-aerodynamic chunk of metal on your wrist never fails to dazzle your mates and colleagues, it’s unwise to assume it’ll have a similar effect on the ladies. In the same way that we go for personality and intelligence over model-perfect looks in a life partner, we appreciate a watch that’s less in-your-face, more subtle,…

HANDS-ON: A softer shape – the Bulgari Octo Roma

“When in Rome, do as the Romans do”, rather ironically, is not a saying that appears to be said very often around the watch design department at Bulgari. In the last few years the brand’s unique Octo collection has thrust them to the forefront of watch manufacturing, not only technically – with record-breaking pieces like the thinnest tourbillon, the thinnest minute repeater, and the thinnest automatic movement – but aesthetically as well, with unique eight-sided case designs inspired by the octagonal motifs adorning the domed ceilings of the Basilica of Maxentius in Rome. This year, creating what Bulgari refer to as the “fifth element” of the Octo line, they have released the Octo Roma, with a softer take on this bold, masculine case design. Less square and more round, the 41mm case has been reworked, with its lugs narrowed to 32.5mm, emphasising the circular bezel and greatly reducing the number of facets from 110 to 58. However, the Octo’s iconic case shape is not lost. Instead, the Octo Roma has brought the design back to its purest form, the octagon, but in a more rounded way. Available in steel, 18k pink gold, or a combination of both, the Octo Roma is…

LIST: 7 power players who wear budget watches

There is a band of world and business leaders who choose discreet watches over luxury pieces with value tantamount to a home deposit, recoiling at the thought of wearing a watch fashioned in their namesake or brandished as a status symbol. It would be a foolish misstep, however, to underestimate these style sleeper cells; men of influence, they resolutely reign in their domains. Steve Jobs – the late Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO of Apple Inc. Net worth: At the time of his death in 2011, Jobs’ net worth was estimated at US$10.2b Watch: Seiko BCRP St. Steel Back / 33mm / Ref. 6431-6030, c1982 Price: US$180 Jobs’ supremely classic Seiko was sold in 2016 for US$42,500 by US-based auction house, Heritage Auctions, who was consigned the watch by Jobs’ longtime house manager, Mark Sheff. Like his unerring appearances in a black turtleneck and blue jeans, and the barebones of his Californian digs, the watch is a lesson in simplicity, with its white face, black Arabic numerals, black metal bezel, and black leather band with plain pin buckle. By the state of the back of the band, it looks like Jobs wore the watch until it was on its last lap.…
