6 tips for avoiding dreaded watch buyer's remorse

Editor’s note: I don’t know about you, but all this turmoil and uncertainty in the world lately has had my watch browsing time going through the roof. It’s a safe place. A happy place. But with much browsing comes much danger. A few drinks. Late into the night. Then boom. You’ve hit the button. You’ve bought another watch. Cam compiled this handy checklist for avoiding bad decisions a couple of years ago, and it’s never been more relevant. Be safe out there folks, nobody needs to compound a crisis with gut-wrenching remorse.   I think we’ve all found ourselves in a similar situation to this before: you wake up, the morning after a big night out and all is seemingly well. At least until the night’s events start trickling back into your mind’s eye, and an odd sensation begins to stir deep down inside, giving you the feeling that things are not quite as they should be. You then roll over and notice something lying there next to you, something that in the unforgiving morning light is not what you were first expecting to see … Flashing before your eyes is a notification from eBay, exclaiming, “Congratulations! You won this item.”…

VIDEO: A closer look at the 2020 A. Lange & Söhne collection, including a more toned Odysseus

2020 A. Lange & Söhne collectionFrom A. Lange & Söhne, we’ve learned never to predict what might be next. In this clip from our Watch Fair & Chill coverage of Watches & Wonders 2020, you’ll see exactly what we mean. When a wristwatch can cost as much as a house or a McLaren supercar, there are a certain amount of bells and whistles you want to see. With the German masters’ Zeitwerk Minute Repeater in white gold, there may not be bells, but you can see the aggressively sculpted hammers striking the snaking gongs in an ingeniously simple way. Instead of ringing the hours, quarters, and minutes like a ‘regular’ minute repeater, A. Lange & Söhne replicate the numerically digital time display with a low gong for hours, followed by double strikes for every 10 minutes, and then single high gongs for the minutes. Although the Zeitwerk collection has existed for some time now, this limited edition of 30 pieces is a celebration and affirmation of how revolution can still be found in luxury watchmaking. The second surprise of Lange’s 2020 releases was an adjustment to the controversial Odysseus — their answer to the blue-dialled steel sports watches that have been running away with the…

VIDEO: Highlights of the 2020 Panerai collection, including the watch with a warranty that will probably out-live you

2020 Panerai collection96. That’s how old I’ll be when the warranty on one of these watches runs out. This year is all about the Luminor in the 2020 Panerai collection, with a number of exciting new references that have been released so far. We focus on two highlights within the collection, the Panerai Luminor Marina PAM01117 and the Panerai Luminor Marina Fibratech PAM01663, both 44mm watches in the classic Luminor case shape and offering some impressive new features. First, the PAM01117, and straight out of the gate we have a 70-year warranty period to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the original Luminor. That’s right, if you buy it today, you’ll have a warranty till 2090. It’s an impressive show of confidence from Panerai in their product, and one you might wish was standard across the industry. Regardless, the PAM01117 is sure to be the life of the party in any nightclub (the next time we are allowed in a nightclub), thanks to the almost supernova radiance of the Super-LumiNova (now you know where it gets its name) that is liberally applied to the dial, hands, case and strap. Turning to the interesting innovation found in the PAM01663, and we have a watch…

MICRO MONDAYS: Spinnaker watches might just be your next sub-$1000 throwdown

It’s Monday in July in 2020, folks, and that means two certainties for yours truly – the first of five full weeks stuck in lockdown, and a chance to focus on another independent watchmaker. That’s right, it’s MICRO MONDAYS, and today we’re taking a closer look at a brand that is already well known in the watch world – Spinnaker. The Hong Kong-based watchmaker creates cost-effective timepieces with a strong emphasis on yachting and nautical inspiration, hence their name and logo. All of the timepieces are hewn from hardwearing 316L steel, and Spinnaker sources all its movements from third-party Japanese manufacturers such as Seiko, Miyota and Hattori. A large and diverse array of timepieces has enabled the brand to amass a good following in the community, and thanks to borrowing archetypal stylistic cues and traits from some more well-known watches, the Hong Kong firm has also been able to cater to a pretty large audience. In fact, for quite a few budding enthusiasts, a Spinnaker may well be their first decent watch. But with such a breadth of different collections, traversing Spinnaker’s website, which is how you purchase one of their watches, can be a little daunting. So, we’ve trawled…

Audemars Piguet add three new black-cased Royal Oak Offshore models with smoked fumé dials

Audemars Piguet have been slowly but surely unveiling some quietly inspired new releases in 2020. First came the bite-the-back-of-your-hand beautiful [Re]master01 Selfwinding Chronograph, then came a diminutive new Royal Oak 34mm. More recently, AP saw fit to bestow its much-lauded Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin with two new models – the dazzling Diamond Indexes In Platinum (15206PT) and Rose Gold (15207OR). Now the Le Brassus outfit has set its sights on its ever-popular Royal Oak Offshore and, boy oh boy, have they turned the wick up. What Audemars Piguet have done is release three entirely new iterations … and quite a lot has changed. For even the most laymen of watch enthusiasts, the dials of these new ROOs are instantly recognisable as being very different indeed. For a start, they’ve been given a smoked fumé treatment in three distinct colours – blue, green and grey, which have also been stamped with AP’s “Méga Tapisserie” pattern. The other BIG talking point is the bulbous exploded Arabic numerals that line the edge of these funky new dials. This is a big aesthetic departure from ROOs of the past, and it proves to be a compelling new look. The cases of the opulent diver’s…

HANDS-ON: The Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition is more grit than glamour

Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 EditionThis year, Daniel Craig will star as James Bond for the final time in the upcoming No Time To Die film, a blockbuster that is sure to be action packed and offer a much needed reprieve from the dystopian movie that is our current reality. On his wrist for this film will be a watch that real-life Daniel Craig actually had a hand in designing, unlike any of the Bond watches that have come before it. It’s not just a PR line. Craig himself helped shape the watch we are taking a closer look at today, the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M 007 Edition.  The story so far… As a bit of background, Daniel Craig took the reins from Pierce Brosnan as 007, with his first appearance as the world’s most famous spy in the critically acclaimed Casino Royale in 2006. No Time To Die will be his fifth and final appearance as James Bond, making both this movie and this watch particularly special. In an interview with Teddy Baldassarre, Omega CEO Raynald Aeschlimann explained that Craig was “very much involved in giving us the vision, giving us also what he feels that James Bond today in the 21st century should…

The ultimate dad-watch for the COVID-lockdown trenches is the Full Metal G-Shock GMW-B5000V

Editor’s note: Let’s not sugar coat this one. Parenting is a total and utter shitshow in a COVID-19 lockdown. And Melbourne, the home of Time+Tide, is back in it. FOR THE NEXT SIX WEEKS. We can leave our houses for one of only four reasons. And going to your local watch retailer to check out the new TAG Heuer Chronosport collection is not one of them. We’ll put the violins away, but for hands-on parents, this has an impact on the wrist. Because daily care of children, especially small ones, requires an elite beater. The home schooling. The endless catering requests. The hourly pulling apart of fights and scraps. This is my choice.  Full disclosure. This G-Shock was a gift from the brand to show their support for a passion project I’ve launched called The Father Hood. Thank you Phil. The ‘Hood’s all about supporting isolated and new dads and inspiring future dads. If you’re new to fatherhood, it may come in handy. It’s also brutally real about #dadlife. Which is why the G-Shock is really the perfect watch gift for this stage of life. No drop from a bench while attached to a soft toy (the kids like to…

The top 5 Omega James Bond watches of all time as chosen by you

Editor’s note: Earlier this week, we asked a question on Instagram stories, what is your favourite Omega Bond watch from the last 25 years? Imma jump in here just to say, uh, wut? Where is the Spectre Seamaster 300 Limited Edition (my clear favourite Bond watch)? Where is Pierce’s watches? Any of them! It seems you either have short memories, or a serious penchant for the Planet Ocean. Or, more broadly speaking, a preference for the new, because these were the top 5, including a Number 1 that hasn’t even been seen on the screen yet! Really? OK, OK. Hey, we don’t stack these things, we just report the news. Over to you, James – Andrew  It’s Bond Week here at T+T, and I’ve been shaking, not stirring, my martinis for the last few days – partly to celebrate the British super spy, and partly because Melburnians have once again been relegated to the confines of our stately homesteads (one bedroom apartment for me) … thanks ISO. I took a short break from stockpiling Four Pillars, vodka, Kina Lillet and all the lemons I could carry, to ask you lovely people: What are the best limited edition Omega Bond watches ever made?…

The boldly modern new TAG Heuer Carrera Chrono Sport is here to save those tiring of heritage remakes

Much like a car manufacturer does when it designs a brand new engine, TAG Heuer are making sure that their flagship self-winding chronograph movement, the Calibre Heuer 02, finds its way into every chrono they’ve released this year. And just days after letting us know that their three in-demand limited edition chronographs equipped with the accomplished movement are still available for pre-order, the La Chaux-de-Fonds watchmaker has gone and dropped more bombshells in the shape of not one, but four entirely new Carreras. Called the Carrera Chrono Sport, these steely racers have scored a host of completely novel features and yes, you guessed it – the Calibre Heuer 02 powers them all. The case The redesigned polished stainless steel cases of the Chronos are not for the faint of heart or slight of wrist – they measure 44mm across and approximately 16mm thick. However, thanks to shorter, lyre-style lugs, according to the watchmaker, these timepieces wear comfortably on the wrist. Anyone who’s familiar with modern TAGs will instantly recognise the familiar pump-style pushers and large multifaceted crown (hewn from 18k rose gold in the Ref.CBN2A5A model), and we’re quite glad TAG has stuck with this combo, as they have been…
