EDITOR’S PICK: Everyday heroes – 8 watches you can wear all day, every day

Editor’s note: In the land of watches, it’s easy to fall into an endless hole of segmentation. Dive watch begets dive chronograph begets dive chronograph in rose gold etc. And, fun as this never-ending narrowing of focus is, we should never forget that the number of people in the market for a rose gold dive chronograph is comparatively small. But you know what lots of people do want? A good, solid watch to wear every day. Which is why Andy Green’s round-up of eight of last year’s best all day, every day watches is such a winner. I like to think of myself as a very ‘everyday’ kind of guy who, for the most part, lives a life wearing smart casual. I’m talking that perfect balance of comfort, function and style. This balance, of course, extends to my tastes in watches, as versatility is paramount — and I like to be prepared. Today we’re looking at the best ‘everyday’ watches of 2017, and only the most versatile made the cut. We’re talking watches that you can start your day with at the gym, wear through a day at the office, and then out to a nice dinner. Tudor Heritage Black Bay…

VIDEO: Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tribute

Two hundred and eighty years is pretty big as far as milestones go. So, given that Jaquet Droz is marking the big two-eight-o this year, you’d expect them to have a few tricks up their sleeve … and you wouldn’t be disappointed. They’ve released this special version of their signature watch — the Grande Seconde Tribute, a limited edition of 88 pieces cased, for the first time, in yellow gold. The original precious metal is perfectly paired with the warm ivory tones of the Grand Feu dial, printed with the characteristic dual dials — including the oversized seconds hand that gives the watch its name. It’s a design that is quite timeless, yet not old-fashioned, due in no small part to the fact that Jaquet Droz has executed the whole affair with restraint and taste. I particularly liked that the individual number of the watch (5 in this case) is printed on the dial. Classy stuff. EDITOR’S PICK: 6 months on, and does Felix still stand by his top 10 watches of 2017?

Editor’s note: Late last year I hung out with Andrew and some strangely undrunk drinks on a hot rooftop bar and rolled through my favourite watches of 2017. Six months and two watch fairs have passed since then, and do I still stand by my picks? Well, scroll down and find out. Legend has it those Coronas are still there … Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Master Chronometer Timeless style and a seriously impressive movement ensured the Aqua Terra won over the pragmatic side of my heart. My only dilemma is — which version? Do I still rate it? Heck yes I do! I’m leaning more towards the bracelet version these days, as well as the grey dial with light blue seconds hand.  Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic I’ve loved this watch from the first time I saw it. Impressive engineering and avant-garde style makes for an irresistible combination for me. Do I still rate it? The OG version is pretty amazing, but I think I love the new gold and rhodium-plated steel versions even more. So I guess I rate it more? Apple Watch Series 3 Shock! Horror! Apple Watch! Not only am I continually impressed by how well Apple does luxury…

SPOTTED! BY AG: Dispatch 11, June 2018

Is anyone else struggling with the fact that it’s June? I am, and this month’s Spotted is jam-packed with some crazy cool watches. Kicking things off, I started this month with ‘coffee and cars’ – and going in I was well aware that any combination of Heuer and Vintage Chronograph is always a winner amongst car enthusiasts. I quickly spotted this very interesting piece – a vintage Leonidas ‘Easy-Rider’. These Leonidas Easy-Riders have quite an interesting history and were introduced in the 1970s for a short period of time by Heuer, developed as an affordable model to battle the increasingly popular quartz watches coming out of Japan. For a more in-depth look at their history, check out Calibre 11’s ‘Ultimate Guide to the Heuer Easy-Rider’ (it’s very good). Later that morning, I spotted another icon on the wrist of @AutoReligion, who was wearing his Seiko PADI. Although owning a large collection of Swiss watches, like Rolex and Omega, its owner loved the classical design and robustness of the PADI. It’s his watch of choice for weekend activities and is also a nice reminder of the special place Japan holds in his heart. Later in the month, I found myself in…

LIST: 4 watches Mark Wahlberg wears on a daily basis that you’ll never, ever have the stones to

Mark Wahlberg, eh. This guy! Actor, entrepreneur and unfettered watch lover who doesn’t care — not even a tiny bit — about what you think of his horological choices. And with his exciting combination of lack of you-know-whats to give and a surplus of funds comes the kind of freedom that allows his wrist to live its best life, just about every day. What does he wear? He’s got the right stuff, baby; often iced out, sometimes gem-set, near always gold or platinum. It’s a gangster’s paradise, and with yet more shots of his baller collection flooding the socials today, it’s time we recapped the four watches he wears that leaves steel sports watches in the dust. 1. This platinum Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116576TBR with gem-set bezel and diamond dial Note the boss-town move of pairing a super dressy watch with a solid colour T-shirt, which gives it a black, blank canvas to shine on. Several levels above. 2. A Rolex Day-Date 40 “Green Emerald” 228396TEM with diamond dial and green gem-set bezel and feature indices The perfect St Patrick’s Day watch for this Boston native. And that’s probably what it was, too. You’re wearing a leprechaun hat. Marky Mark’s wearing this. *Commence the shame* 3. A…

WHO TO FOLLOW: Filmmaker, photographer, watch guy – @nicholask_la

Nicholas Alexander Kalikow is a producer, director, screenwriter and photographer. He loves being on set and working with talented people to make films and take photos. Hi Nicholas, what’s your daily watch and why? Right now it’s a Patek 5167A Aquanaut. I like it because most people don’t know what it is and I can wear it with jeans and a T-shirt or a tux. And a Rolex 16710 GMT II Pepsi. I think the Pepsi GMT is the coolest watch around and incredibly useful if you travel a lot or have business in multiple time zones (like I do). What else is in your collection? Have you got a favourite? I have a few Tudors, Heuers and Rolex watches from the ’50s to the early ’80s. Highlights include a Tudor Snowflake Sub, an Omega Speedy 321, and a Rolex 5513 and 1016 (both of which I bought before the prices shot up). Right now my favourites are my 1969 Rolex 1675 GMT and a Heuer 2446C Autavia GMT. How did you find yourself collecting watches? Do you remember your first piece, and do you still have it? Like many kids with dyslexia, I had a hard time learning my left…

EVENT: Hemsworth Thors a cold Sydney night auctioning watch for charity at TAG Heuer ’55 Years of Carrera’ Exhibition

In an unusually candid on-stage interview, Chris Hemsworth has revealed that he often buys watches for his support staff when a movie wraps and that his relationship with TAG Heuer started when he was gifted a watch after the 2013 movie Rush. “I think TAG Heuer probably realised I was into the brand when I started buying more of them for myself and my team to celebrate the end of a movie. I don’t mean hundreds of people, just my chef, my trainer, my stuntman.” Hemsworth, who became one of the brand’s global ambassadors in 2015, was the guest of honour at the ’55 Years of Carrera’ event at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art that also housed an exhibition of rare TAG Heuer and Heuer Carrera models, dating back to the first ever Carrera from 1963, which was named after the legendary Carrera Panamericana Mexico road race. Since the mid-’90s, the Carrera has emerged as the centrepiece of TAG Heuer’s range and has evolved into three distinct pillars – retro, contemporary and futuristic – that we will soon explore in a video. Called ‘Museum in Motion’, the exhibition also features modern Carreras, including the new TAG Heuer Carrera Tête de…

MY MONTH WITH: The H. Moser & Cie Pioneer (and why I bought one)

I’m eternally fascinated by the drivers of a watch purchase. The behaviours and the catalyst/s that can precede the moment one decides they want to invest in a wristwatch. What’s most intriguing is how totally different the process can be, based on the watch. For example, this one, and my journey to it. From a personal point of view, what leads me to that most happy of hashtags — #newwatchalert — more than anything else is research. Lots of collecting images. Lots of review reading. A constant saving of Instagram pics to my phone gallery. Updating my desktop to a high-res shot that captures it just so. This progresses, indubitably, to a ‘conversation’ (an attempt at a charm offensive, perfectly timed, with wine close at hand) with my wife, some ferrying around of funds, and eventually, all bridges crossed, a deal done. The interesting thing about the way I bought the H. Moser & Cie Pioneer with midnight blue dial is that none of these things happened. Not one. I didn’t have a single picture of it anywhere! Sure, I’d heard about it, I mean there’s always a bit of excitement when precious metal-only watches by great marques get released in…

NEWS: Cartier on screen and in style for Ocean’s 8

Disclaimer: This post contains minimal traces of watch. But it does contain some very large diamonds. Ocean’s 8, the latest in the long-running series of elaborate heist movies, is about to hit our screens, but this time around the film is less of a bro session, as Clooney, Pitt et al. have been benched in favour of an all female crew, with Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett masterminding the (inevitably convoluted) caper. The object of their attention is a fairly pricey necklace, worn by Anne Hathaway. And here’s where things get interesting. This necklace, named the “Jeanne Toussaint” necklace, is made by Cartier, who happen to be the film’s exclusive jewellery partner, so some scenes were filmed in the brand’s New York boutiques, and Cartier watches (pro-tip for the watchspotters), jewellery and high jewellery items have their own supporting roles. The prop necklace was made in less than eight weeks by Cartier’s Parisian high jewellery workshops, from white gold with zirconium oxide for the diamonds. What I particularly like about this necklace, though, is the backstory. The necklace takes its name from Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier’s Creative Director during the 1930s, and is credited with being significant in establishing Cartier’s visual…
