There are few things more frustrating than seeing pictures of an incredible watch, reading the news and reviews of just how great it is, only to discover that it won’t be hitting actual stores for months. It’s a very specific feeling (in fact there’s probably a word for it in German, uhrenverbotenangst or some such), and one we can relate to. Well, today we’re hoping to ease that pain just a little with five watches you can buy right now. And what’s more, they’re all under $5k. You’re welcome. Editor’s Note: Simple vintage looks, rich tones, a brushed dial and a cinnamon suede strap to die for, all for a very reasonable price. The Longines Heritage 1945 – it’s the perfect watch for a crisp winter’s day. One of the highlights on our Baselworld calendar is seeing what heritage re-release Longines has cooked up, and whoo boy, have they pulled out all the stops in 2017 or what. You’re looking at the Heritage 1945, an absolutely on point interpretation of a mid-century dress watch. Based on a 1945 design called the Calatrava by collectors, this watch does everything right. Funnily enough it’s the exact watch that Sunflowerman illustrated as part of the Watercolour Watch project back in 2015. The 40mm steel case is simple, and not overly fussy, with a flat bezel just the right width and a slender-yet-functional crown. The mid-tan nubuck strap with single line of reinforcing stitching in contrasting thread walks a perfectly straight line between dress and casual. The real star is the dial. For such a minimal layout, Longines has packed it full of sexy detail. First of all there’s the vintage velvet effect of the brushed copper-tone convex dial, then there’s the alternating steel-tone…
Co-presented by Belle magazine and Coco Republic, the leading name in furniture, property styling and interior design services, last week’s Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards brought together Australia’s best interior designers to celebrate the spectrum of their creativity working across residential, commercial and hospitality projects over the past year. The seventh industry awards night featured two new categories: the Rado Emerging Design Star and Best Work With Colour. The winner of the Rado Emerging Design Star award at the Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards 2017 was Yasmine Ghoniem (Amber Road Design, Sydney), who said of her accolade, “The talent [tonight] was absolutely immense, which makes our Emerging Design Star win even sweeter.” Rado has long championed rising design talent, so it was great to see the watch brand’s support of Australian design circles. The brand has a longstanding involvement with design events and the promotion of inventiveness through the Rado Star Prize France, Italy, US and Switzerland, which showcases the work of fledgling designers. Yasmine was also nominated in the category Best Work with Colour and was definitely one of the most vibrantly attired at the event. Green is her favourite colour but among her prizes was a chic Rado True Open…
Editor’s Note: Picture 10 pristine new Rolex boxes stacked neatly in your cupboard or, more likely, your safe. For me, this is immediately challenging because this would mean a bigger safe. What would be a dream for many of us is a reality for one man, Mark Richards. We published his watch story as part of a bigger feature video about his life. You can watch that here. Mark is the most successful skipper in the gruelling Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race’s 71-year history, and his mighty waterborne steed, current race record holder Wild Oats XI, is the most successful yacht. But when we met, we didn’t just discuss tacking manoeuvres and strategy, we also talked about his watch, the Rolex Yacht-Master (ref 16622). The one he hasn’t taken off since he won it in 2005. The very same watch he won when Wild Oats XI took its first line honours in a Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht race. It proved to be the start of a decade-long winning streak that continues today. Before you hit play, let me quickly tell a behind-the-scenes story. Part of the shoot included us filming Mark’s watch on its own. This happened at the end of…
The entrance to the venue for last Friday’s Australian launch of Montblanc’s UNICEF collection was unassuming: commuters and shoppers on Melbourne’s busy Chapel street walked right past the narrow door wedged between two shopfronts. Blink and you’d miss it – we nearly did. A discreet sign was the only clue. But as soon as the door opened we knew we were in the right place. The narrow stairs of the Victorian terrace were littered with art – a Degas bronze on the landing and floor to ceiling canvases on the walls. As we reached the top of the stairs it was clear we had left Melbourne far behind, and were now in the Aladdin’s cave that is David Bromley’s personal studio. One of Australian’s best-known contemporary artists, Bromley’s work is instantly recognisable, full of bold colours and graphic lines. His painting and sculpture was everywhere in the studio: on walls and nestled in between displays of ethnographic artefacts, Venetian glass, giant Japanese bottles and art – everything from massive modernist oils, fine lithographs and pop culture prints was represented. In the middle of all this splendour – looking perfectly at home – was Montblanc. Lovingly displayed on long tables were leather goods,…
Following in the grand tradition of elite athletes misplacing expensive watches, Mexican former WBC middleweight champion Julio César Chávez Jr has allegedly had his Hublot stolen from his Las Vegas hotel room. Chávez Jr’s wife, Frida, alleges that the unidentified Hublot (and a phone) were stolen from Chávez Jr by women with whom he was partying, and that she was later contacted by the thieves. Vaguely salacious video posted on Daily Mail shows Chávez, seemingly intoxicated, on a bed surrounded by women. Frida Chávez asserts that her husband may have been drugged in order to facilitate the theft. Luck clearly hasn’t been going Chávez’s way recently, having just been resoundingly beaten by 26-year old Canelo Álvarez in 12 rounds. Hublot is an active supporter of boxing and has sponsored the World Boxing Council since 2012. In fact, Hublot has previously created a limited edition celebrating Chávez Jr’s famous father, Julio César Chávez, who retired in 2005 with 105 wins to his name (out of a total of 115 fights). The King Power WBC, released as an edition of 12 in 2012, celebrated Chávez Snr and other legends, and was auctioned off to raise money for the WBC’s charitable initiatives.
A three course, thoroughly French menu paired with Premier Cru Burgundy? Tick. A white-gloved waiter per guest? Tick. And a venue that Zelda Fitzgerald would have felt at ease in? Tick. Van Cleef & Arpels’ inaugural High Jewellery lunch in Sydney last week, at the private home Barford House, was a lesson in femininity and Place Vendôme heritage. The celebratory cavalry was out for the arrival of more than 80 high jewellery pieces. It’s the first such visit since the legendary Paris maison established its Australian presence, opening its Melbourne boutique last October and its Sydney flagship in February. This notable occasion drew Nicolas Bos, CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels, along with Nicolas Luchsinger, International Retail Director/Director of Heritage Collection, and Catherine Renier, President of Asia-Pacific. A Parisian delegation in force. Set on the 5527-square metre estate, the mansion’s ground level salon housed a sparkling display including six women’s watches – canny distractions from the Bellevue Hill property that was valued at $60 million a few years ago, and has hosted Bono and Beyoncé. While the Lady Nuit des Papillons bracelet watch with sapphires and white diamonds was a dazzling competitor, the stand-out, unsurprisingly, was 2013’s Cadenas Pavée pink sapphire bracelet watch in rose gold.…
Montblanc has been supporting UNICEF, the United Nations organisation dedicated to improving the lives of children, since 2004, with a particular focus (appropriately enough) on children’s literacy. To date they’ve donated more than $10m USD, and have pledged another $1.5m within the next 12 months. Their latest UNICEF collection offers a complete suite of luxury lifestyle companions, including leather goods and a set of particularly handsome writing instruments inspired by the Rosetta stone. Of particular interest to us though is the trio of limited edition Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum watches. We’re on record as being fans of Montblanc’s cleverly designed and smartly priced world timer, particularly the colourful Heritage Spirit version. These three charitable versions differ from the regular production model only on the city disc, with Chinese and Arabic scripts joining the more familiar Latin version. And while the regular production model marks Paris as GMT +1, this UNICEF edition replaces it with Geneva, the headquarters of the United Nations. One one level, the UNICEF Heritage Spirit Orbis Terrarum offers a tweaked version of the regular model, with the cachet of a limited edition. On another (and we’d argue more important) level, with this watch you can look down…
