Ressence likes to do things like no other in the watchmaking industry… Its approach is both modern, technical and unique, and yet lots of traditional mechanics inside. Already impressive with its in-house orbital display of the time, Ressence decided to even improve the concept with an oiled-filled piece, with the Type 3. And then, benefiting from this distortion-free system, a dive watch was launched. For 2019, the Ressence Type 5 gets updated with a Night blue dial – relevant for a dive watch!

Overall, it has been a good year in terms of novelties – probably not the best edition ever, but still, there were some pretty interesting things to see, especially in the field of complication. Since its introduction in 2014 (or even in 2010 if you look at the very first Zero Series, which was the predecessor of this model), the Ressence Type 1 never ceased to evolve. From the lack of crown and the original display, then followed by several colours/finishing and finally the introduction of the Squared version, this watch has become an entire collection named “Air-Filled” (contrasting with the oil-filled watches). On the last day of SIHH 2018, Brice, Xavier and I sat down to list the best watches of this year’s Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie. It’s been a good week, tiring though with 4-hour nights, however, the overall feel of this year’s SIHH was more positive than last years. Has the industry recovered from the crisis? If I have to judge based on the feeling of the fair, I’d say yes, but let’s await the numbers that will be published in half a year from now. Here, at MONOCHROME, we’re not huge fans of the smart-watches, to say the least. We cherish and celebrate watches in their purest (probably old-school) form: ME-CHA-NI-CAL! We love gears, pinions, hand-decoration, complications but also all the devoted people that work behind the scenes. Smart-watch, as tech objects, never ticked the boxes.
