Review: The Ressence Type 1 Squared – Thin & Dressy

Founded in 2010, Ressence is a brand which satiated an underserved segment. Taking a very mechanical, very analogue method of time keeping and displaying time in a thoroughly futuristic almost digital way. As a result, Ressence is to watchmaking what Pebble was to Silicon Valley, an innovative horological start-up with industrial…

Hands-On with the Urwerk UR-T8, the Reversible Metal Beast

Urwerk has been making remarkably avant-garde watches for two decades now, but it did not produce a reversible watch, until SIHH 2017. That’s where the watchmaker took the covers off the UR-T8, a limited edition to mark its 20th anniversary. Made of titanium, the front and back plates of the case are covered in an […]

Review: H. Moser & Cie. Swiss Mad Watch

Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined that the most talked about watch from SIHH 2017 is a watch made of Swiss cheese. Well truth is indeed stranger than fiction, all thanks to Moser. The Schaffhausen-based manufacturer has indeed outdone itself this time with the one-of-a-kind (literally, it is a piece unique) Swiss Mad Watch.…

Throwback Sunday: Watches which define Purity and Simplicity

Many a collector’s journey has begun with either shortlist built with the stellar reputation of the finest watchmakers in the land: Vacheron Constantin, Patek Philippe or Audemars Piguet; Or they can begin with the best marketed brands: Rolex, Omega or Longines. Alternatively, they can simply be lured by the most complicated…

Breguet: The Artistic Functionality of Decoration

As material sciences advanced, watchmaking and watch decoration eventually progressed into specialist fields, executed by professionals in separate departments of a modern manufacture. However, for men like Abraham-Louis Breguet, the watchmaking conundrum was dual-pronged – a test of engineering and a challenge of material sciences.…

EXCLUSIVE: Hands-on with the Oris Royal Flying Doctor Service Limited Edition II, live from the Avalon airshow

When it comes to partnerships, there are a few routes watch brands typically embark on. There’s the celebrity ambassador, which is often little more than name awareness and a few key appearances. Then there’s the high-profile event tie-in, which usually results in a limited edition with a few dial tweaks. And there’s the organisational partnership, which, in its best form results in two like-minded parties creating something that benefits all involved. It’s this last model that Oris tends to opt for, and they do it well. Oris Australia has a strong track record in supporting charitable organisations, notably their work around the Great Barrier Reef, but also their partnership with the Royal Flying Doctor Service – a comprehensive air ambulance service that provides primary healthcare to people living in rural and remote communities, across a swathe of Australia encompassing 7.13 million square kilometres. It’s essential work that the RFDS has been undertaking since 1928, which Oris has been actively involved in since 2013, releasing the first generation of the Royal Flying Doctor Service watch, as well as providing ongoing support. Today Oris and the RFDS unveil the second generation of the RFDS watch, in the perfect setting of the Avalon Airshow. And it…

REVIEW – The Ateliers deMonaco Admiral Chronograph Flyback Saphir

If some of you might know this watch manufacture by now (thanks to a coverage here, at Monochrome), Ateliers deMonaco is clearly not the most famous of them all… Which, in all honesty, is rather a pity, as the brand has a lot to offer. Forget about the affiliation with the Frédérique Constant Group. Ateliers deMonaco plays in a different league (with a collection that comprises tourbillons, minute repeaters or Hallmark of Geneva watches…) and their latest creation has some appeal, both aesthetically and technically. Here is our review of the Ateliers deMonaco Admiral Chronograph Flyback Saphir.

Hands-On with the MB&F HM7 Aquapod, the Avant-Garde Aquatic Wristwatch

Inspired by a jellyfish, the HM7 Aquapod is round, unlike other Horological Machines, but that’s the only thing that’s conventional about it. Though the jellyfish link is not immediately apparent, the Aquapod is immediately recognisable as a marine watch of sorts, with a rotating bezel that’s reminiscent of a lifebuoy. And like it or not, […]
