Throwback Sundays: Six Watch Recommendations for Running Errands, from Our Archives

Imagine yourself in this situation: you need to head down to a supermarket that is ten minutes away to grab some ingredients that have just run out. As a Watch-Idiot-Savant (WIS), you would not want to leave the house without wearing a watch, and yet you also not want to wear something that is too pricey too. Well, what will you choose?…

Review: HYT Skull AXL Rose

HYT cobrands its SKULL with a famous singer. The headline reads with resounding applause. Axl R0se, a founding member of Guns N’ Roses and probably one of the most respected rock artists of the last 30 years, is a famous friend of the brand. And now, the contemporary watch brand consummates their love for each other with a blue dial SKULL on a…

Review: Girard-Perregaux Laureato Tourbillon

Girard-Perregaux strengthens her presence in the haute horologie market with the return to SIHH by the re-launch of the Laureato Collection. A complete line revision, the offerings are in line with the “Complications for less” concept which was apparent in the PalExpo this year. The Laureato collection is expanded and now…

Up Close with the Blancpain Villeret Complete Calendar 40mm

The triple calendar is a basic complication but one that’s practically synonymous with Blancpain, having been introduced in the 1980s as one of the “six masterpieces” of watchmaking, part of Jean-Claude Biver‘s plan to revive the marque. While the complication is commonplace – also offered by brands ranging from Jaeger-LeCoultre to Vacheron Constantin – Blancpain’s iteration is the most technically […]

Review: Christophe Claret Maestro

Christophe Claret always surprises us with his creations by combining excellent craftsmanship and great imagination of his. This time around at the SIHH 2017, we see the unveiling of the Maestro, an interesting take on the horological creativity of Christophe Claret. The main attraction is the unique architecture of the watch with its glass…

Review – Brellum Duobox, A New Offer With Cool Retro Design & Excellent Value For Money

The Brellum Duobox is a no-nonsense chronograph with retro-inspired design, powered by the robust and reliable Valjoux 7750. Elegant, nicely executed and offering excellent value for money – it is most likely one of the most affordable chronographs powered by a 7750 (and the best is that this movement is COSC certified… and that is almost never true in the below 5k price bracket!). This sounded promising enough to meet Sébastien Muller, founder of the brand, and go hands-on with the Brellum Duobox.

Review: Jaeger-Lecoultre Geophysic Tourbillon Universal Time

Jaeger LeCoultre updates the Geophysic Collection’s worldtime watch with a tourbillon, making it the world’s first worldtimer to have a flying tourbillon. The production of the Jaeger-Lecoultre Tourbillon Universal Time will be limited to 100 pieces. During SIHH we had the chance to hold it, look at it and feel it. In this…

Hands-On Review: Parmigiani Bugatti Aerolithe Performance Flyback Chronograph

In 2014, watch manufacturer Parmigiani Fleurier and automaker Bugatti collaborated to bring us the Parmigiani Bugatti Aerolithe Flyback Chronograph, to be honest, I felt it was rather nondescript and lacked enough design elements to truly make it a “Bugatti” themed watch. For SIHH 2017, the Parmigiani Bugatti Aerolithe…

HANDS-ON: Reach for the skies with the Oris Pro-Pilot Big Crown Day Date

For a few weeks in March, Avalon (part-way between Melbourne and Geelong) will become one of the busiest air spaces in the country. The normally sleepy airport will be transformed when state-of-the-art planes including the gigantic RAF Atlas airlifter and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (in its first Australian sighting), will thunder down from the skies. The reason, of course, is the bi-annual Avalon airshow, the world’s third largest aviation trade show, and if you’re in the market for a private jet or just looking to stock up on heat-seeking missiles, no doubt it’s already in the diary. We’ll be there for a more down-to-earth purpose, spending time with event sponsors Oris, a brand with its eyes firmly on the skies. What better time to talk about the Big Crown Day Date, from their Pro-Pilot collection. Typically, pilot’s watches are pared-back, utilitarian affairs with simple cases and black and white dials, so this offering from Oris is definitely at the dressier end of the spectrum. While the bold printed Arabic numerals (that 4!) and highly readable hands are still present, the dial finish is a rich grey starburst, which makes a pleasant change from plain black. And though the 45mm case means there’s plenty of space, the…

Review: Ulysse Nardin Marine Tourbillon Grand Feu

SIHH has always been full of surprises, and this year is no exception. We witnessed for the first time a Royal Oak in all ceramic, Greubel Forsey joining an exalted group of manufacturers with their first grand sonnerie timepiece, and yes, a million-dollar watch made of cheese.  …
