36’000 VpH: even after 48 years this is still what sets the Zenith El Primero apart from nearly any other chronograph. This year Zenith expanded their iconic El Primero 36’000 VpH collection with two new models, featuring a two-tone dial and an innovative case.
Over the past few years we’ve come to depend on Montblanc for their faultless heritage-inspired reissues and ‘real world’ pricing structure, so imagine the surprise on our faces when we caught our first glimpse of their 2017 line up. Sure, there were still plenty of Heritage Chronométrie pieces and new 4810 models, but the real star of the show was the completely re-imagined Timewalker. In the video, Andrew and I discuss the pros and cons of the brand’s new, automotive direction and while we didn’t quite see eye-to-eye on the on the Timewalker, we could both very much get behind the new bronze additions to the 1858 collection.

Since Cartier reinvigorated its fine watchmaking department eight years ago, it has surprised us each year with one great complicated watch after another. This year, Cartier had a different kind of surprise: a resurrection of the Panthère de Cartier, which had been discontinued in the early aughts.
If there is one complication that Cartier hasn’t used very often throughout its history, it is the moon phase. With the new Drive de Cartier Moon Phases it returns in a very classic and masculine way.
The SIHH gives you the opportunity to see and handle some of the most amazing new watches. All those masterpieces available at a single venue is exhilarating yet also hard work, especially for Haute Time’s photographer Alex Teuscher. Light conditions are always challenging at a fair, and there is a constant pressure to finish up in time make it to the next appointment. Simultaneously it is also important to respect the subject and photograph it in an environment that it suits. In the digital age, you can, fortunately, see very quickly if you are on point, and very little things are as gratifying as ending a long yet exciting day, seeing that the fruit of your work is actually looking pretty awesome!

Lange & Söhne is one of those brands that knows that it pays to be patient. With a loyal base of knowledgeable watch connoisseurs as their main clients, they can probably sell out each year a new addition to their “Pour le Mérite” collection. Yet, they don’t. In fact, the new Tourbograph Perpetual is only the fifth watch to be part of this exclusive collection since it was first launched in 1994. Back then it was the very first wristwatch to feature a fusée-and-chain transmission, something that we can also find in the new Tourbograph Perpetual.
Panerai kicked off 2017 with a bang. The brand that artfully bolts together ‘Italian design and Swiss precision’ showed a cohesive range with a strong material focus at SIHH in January. At the collection’s core was the mighty Luminor Submersible in many shapes and sizes. Andrew and I picked our three favourite takes on this diver’s diver, and it quickly became clear just how versatile the Submersible is: from dressy to everyday to downright lustworthy. All that’s needed is a change of case metal and a new dial. The only question is, which watch wouldn’t Andrew shut up about?

The America’s Cup has to be the most exciting and challenging nautical event. This year it celebrates its 35th anniversary and does so with Panerai. This year’s event also means the introduction of the new America’s Cup Class foiling catamarans, which will reach speeds over 90 km/h, making this the Formula 1 of the seas. Only the world’s best sailors participate, and for this, they need a rugged watch to withstand this highly demanding and competitive environment.
