Introducing – The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Automatic & Chronograph Get Black Dials

When introduced back in 2016, the re-designed Overseas was Vacheron Constantin’s answer for the highly coveted market of the luxury sports watch (a market dominated by AP and PP). First launched in blue and silver editions, later followed by warm and original brown versions, there was still one missing colour to make the collection complete. Problem solved for 2018, with the introduction of the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Automatic 4500V and Chronograph 5500V, now with black dials (and even a reversed-panda for the Chrono).

Hands-on – Bell & Ross Expands the BR03-92 Diver Collection with Blue and Bronze Editions

A year ago, Bell & Ross surprised with the introduction of one of their coolest recent watches, the BR03-92 Diver (first introduced in Black). This was not an easy one, however, as including all the codes of a true dive watch in a squared case might sound tricky. Yet, success was here and the result is more than pleasant. For Baselworld 2018, the brand is creating a collection around this concept, with the new Bell & Ross BR03-92 Diver Blue and Bronze editions.

Hands-on – MeisterSinger Metris collection – Young, Fresh and Affordable

Meistersinger, the brand that offers (mostly) single-handed watches and that we’ve come to love, is stepping up its game in recent years. New movements, new complications, new concepts to display time with as few hands as possible and really staying true to their less-is-more approach to timekeeping. Last year saw the introduction of the unusual but cool Meistersinger Salthora Meta X dive watch and this year Meistersinger brings a new kid to their family of watches; the young, fresh and accessible Metris.

Hands-on – The Cool, Vintage-Inspired Omega Seamaster 1948 Limited Editions 70th Anniversary

What’s old is new again, and Omega’s Seamaster 1948 gets a second lease of life in 2018 with two limited edition models that capture the retro spirit of the originals combined with turbo-charged 21st-century engines in the form of Co-Axial Master Chronometer movements. Seventy years down the line, the Seamaster 1948 reappears to seduce a new generation of buyers with two very attractive models, one with central seconds and the other with a small seconds sub-dial. With their elegant 38mm cases, monochromatic silver dials, Spartan aesthetics and non-existent date window, the Seamaster 1948 models were definitely one of our favourites at Baselworld 2018.

In-Depth – The New Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight 39mm – The Best Tudor BB So Far?

This year, at Baselworld 2018, the main novelty for Tudor was the Black Bay GMT – a watch that was a hot topic of debate, knowing that Rolex also showed its version of the Steel-Pepsi GMT watch. But was this watch the most important piece in the new collection? Maybe not. Additionally, Tudor introduced the Black Bay Fifty-Eight. Weird name for a watch that, at first sight, seems to be just another diving Black Bay. But let’s get straight to the point: this new ref. 79030N could well be the best Tudor Black Bay so far, and here’s why.

Industry News – Alpina AlpinerX Launches on Kickstarter and it’s Selling Like Hotcakes

Smart watches, quartz watches, digital watches… that’s nothing for MONOCHROME. You know us, we cover high-end mechanical watches (and a value proposition once in a while), because the beauty of mechanics is what gets us going. The other day, however, Alpina launched their latest creation on Kickstarter and I think that’s rather novel. A big and established brand launching their latest watch on a digital platform mostly used by new-comers.

Value Proposition – The Metropolitan Watch from Ayers Watches

What does an engineer do when his career path has taken him far from his original field of study and love of graphics and design? Well, if you’re Glenn Lim, you set out to create high-quality, yet accessible mechanical wristwatches. Founded in 2016 with his wife, Sally Lim, Ayers Watches is a new Australian micro brand that focuses on creating exclusive designs using premium materials. The company’s first watch collection, the Metropolitan, has just launched on Kickstarter, so we thought we’d take a closer look.

First Look – Zenith Defy Classic – Smaller, More Affordable, Still Bold

In 2017, Zenith relaunched the DEFY collection and impressed with the Defy El Primero 21, a hundredth-of-a-second chronograph with a 50Hz ultra-high-beat escapement dedicated only to the chrono. But that was not all. Later that year came the Defy LAB, with its revolutionary and unprecedented oscillator – a proper innovation. And finally, there was the new design, with integrated case and bracelet, large diameter and bold shapes. For Baselworld 2018, the design is kept but with more simplicity movement-wise – but not that simple either. Meet the Zenith Defy Classic.

Baselworld 2018 – Delma Shell Star Black Tag Limited Edition

Delma is a family-owned company whose origins go as far back as in 1924 when the Gilomen brothers founded their own company in Lengnau, near Biel. In the fifties and sixties, the diving needs, coupled with the growing popularity of Scuba diving, made the importance of robust and trustworthy underwater instruments paramount. This led to the development of the first dive watches. In 1969, Delma introduced the Periscope, its first timepiece with greater water-resistance. A few years later, in 1975, the brand issued its premier professional diver, the Shell Star. For Baselworld 2018, this watch makes a comeback.
