50 shades of bronze… Bronze is trendy and has been mainly used to craft dive watches. Yet, Ferdinand Berthoud thought that this material could be used differently and could be an interesting playfield for its usually technical chronometer watches. At Baselworld 2018, the brand releases the Edition 1785, five unique pieces of the Chronomètre FB 1R, fashioned out of bronze and featuring different patina.
At Baselworld 2018, Schwarz Etienne unveils a limited-edition box set of three watches, which showcase the brand’s watchmaking mastery and expertise in creative artisan crafts. It will be part of a series to celebrate seasons (Ode aux saisons or Ode to seasons). Starting with spring (Ode au Printemps or Ode to spring), the first opus celebrates the awakening of life eloquently pictured with flowers and bees. The choice of the insect is not accidental as the coat of arms of La Chaux-de-Fonds, the city of Schwarz-Etienne, features a gold-coloured hive surrounded by bees. The special edition also aims at raising awareness for their preservation and protection.

Bucherer introduced the Manero Tourbillon DoublePeripheral with the new in-house calibre CFB T3000, a world first that combines a peripheral automatic winding system and a peripherally mounted tourbillon that appears to float.

Meet the new Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic – and yes, it is paper thin, at 3.95mm thick.
I said it before and I’m saying it again, my wrist is rather lucky, as it gets to wear quite some extraordinary timepieces. For the past three months, I’ve been wearing the Spirograph from master watchmaker Karsten Fräßdorf, and it has been worn as a daily beater. And that was exactly what Karsten asked me: “Wear it as your daily watch and do not treat it as a fragile timepiece only because it features a large tourbillon“. Wearing the Spirograph proved to be a sheer pleasure and I enjoyed that huge tourbillon more than I ever thought I would. In fact, it has been one of the nicest watches I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing, ever. Stripped back to its bare essentials, the nude, logo-free dial with its spectacular fumé finish offers a tantalising spectacle of the flying tourbillon. It is a sensual watch that perfectly incarnates the philosophy that less can mean a whole lot more. Minimalism is a word that gets used a lot to describe H.Moser & Cie.’s approach to watchmaking, where complications are revisited and displayed in ingeniously simple ways. Who can forget the Endeavour Perpetual Calendar Concept watch that took ‘minimalism’ to unprecedented heights with its naked dial?
Music exists in time. Uniting two traditional Swiss crafts, the Jacob & Co. Opera is a highly complicated timepiece and a wearable music box at the same time… Moreover, it is a spectacular show on the wrist that is pretty hard to depict. The ballet of its triple-axis tourbillon and its musical mechanism in action is surprising and captivating. Technically, the combination of these two rare complications is impressive. There is indeed a lot happening and if a picture is worth a 1,000 words, a video is worth a million… It is even a must to present a timepiece that defies traditional labels by playing the Godfather theme and by featuring a miniature Don Vito Corleone in its center!
