Review – Patek Philippe Nautilus Perpetual Calendar 5740G

When Baselworld 2018 opened its doors, this new watch came as a surprise. We could have expected this one to be launched for the 40th anniversary of this iconic model – which happened two years ago, with the presentation of the Platinum 3-hand 5711/1P and the White Gold Chronograph 5976/1G. Instead, Patek has decided to wait two more years to introduce the first grand complication in the Nautilus collection. After the chronograph, the annual calendar or the travel time, here is the Patek Philippe Nautilus Perpetual Calendar 5740G.

Video – The Baselworld 2018 Bvlgari Octo Watches (incl. the new World Record) Fully Explained

After successively launching the thinnest tourbillon watch (the Octo Finissimo Tourbillon), the thinnest minute repeater watch (the Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater) and, at that time, the thinnest automatic watch (the Octo Finissimo Automatic), we thought that the Bvlgari Watches team was about to slow things down a bit, just to let us breathe. Wrong! For Baselworld 2018, we had to be stunned, again… Here are the Baselworld 2018 Bvlgari Octo Watches, fully explained by Guido Terreni (Managing Director of Bvlgari Watches), including the new world record watch and the superb Sandblasted Trilogy.

Video – Co-President of Chopard Karl-Friedrich Scheufele Explains the New L.U.C Quattro

A few days ago, just prior to Baselworld 2018, we introduced to you Chopard’s new take on one of its icons, the L.U.C Quattro, a complex watch with no less than 4 barrels and a 9-day power reserve. Yet, as powerful as this watch is, it remains a true statement of elegance and distinction – as a Chopard should be. To understand more about what this watch really represents for the brand, we asked Co-President of Chopard Karl-Friedrich Scheufele to explain its history and the reasons behind the creation of this 2018 edition – check the video on top of this article.

Baselworld 2018 – Bvlgari Introduces the Octo Finissimo Automatic Sandblasted Trilogy (now in Steel or Gold, in addition to Titanium)

Exactly a year ago, Bvlgari stunned the watchmaking world by launching what was then the thinnest automatic watch on the market, the Octo Finissimo Automatic. The best things about this watch was that it had nothing to do with a shy, demure timepiece. Instead, Bvlgari came out with what we think is a true example of a luxury sports watch (see it face to face with the mother of them all, the RO). For Baselworld 2018, what was a single watch becomes a trilogy and a fully-fledged collection, with the introduction of the Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Automatic Sandblasted in steel and 18k rose gold.

Baselworld 2018 – Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic – The New Thinnest Automatic Watch (and Tourbillon) at 3.95mm

Game on! The race between Bvlgari and Piaget to prove who can manufacture the thinnest watch in the world continues. At Baselworld 2017, Bvlgari introduced the Octo Finissimo Automatic, a true luxury sports watch with a bold design and the thinnest automatic movement on the market. At the SIHH 2018, Piaget trumpeted not one, but two world records: the thinnest mechanical watch ever and the thinnest automatic watch. Baselworld 2018 has opened its doors and Bvlgari sets two new records in a single watch: the world’s thinnest tourbillon watch and the world’s thinnest automatic watch. Meet the new Bvlgari Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Automatic – and yes, it is paper thin, at 3.95mm thick.

Pre-Baselworld 2018 – The New Interpretation of the Chopard L.U.C Quattro

Chopard should not be forgotten when the subject of Haute Horlogerie comes on the table, especially with the L.U.C collection – launched in 1996 and representing the brand’s top line. The Chopard L.U.C collection comprises watches with beautifully hand-finished in-house movements. The first movement they launched in this collection was calibre 1.96. Four years later, in the year 2000, Chopard introduced the first L.U.C Quattro, the world’s first hand-wound calibre with four stacked mainspring barrels. Just before Baselworld 2018, here is a new interpretation of the Chopard L.U.C Quattro.

The Stylish yet Accessible Steel Edition of the Cartier Drive de Cartier Extra Flat

In 2016, Cartier, the master of beautifully shaped cases, introduced a stylish dress watch for men; the Cartier Drive. Offered in gold or steel, it was an instant hit. Hot on the heels of this initial success, came the Drive Extra Flat in 2017, an even more refined and attractive dress watch that really turned our heads. Unlike the earlier Drive models, however, this beauty was only available in precious metals and, consequently, came with a rather hefty price tag. This year, however, we are pleased to say that Cartier has introduced the Drive Extra Flat in steel, and it is quite an attractive package at that.

Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5367 “Grand Feu” Enamel

In 2013, Breguet went on the technical side with the ref. 5377, the Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique. It was and still is one of the thinnest automatic tourbillon watches ever created (only surpassed by this 1980s AP) and remains a proper technical feat, with its self-winding movement “charged” by a peripheral rotor. Complex inside, yet sleek outside. As a preview of the Baselworld 2018 collection, the brand introduces a new and even cleaner version, the Breguet Classique Tourbillon Extra-Plat Automatique 5367, now with “Grand Feu” Enamel dial.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin 15202IP – The Superb Titanium/Platinum and Smoked Blue Dial Version of the RO

When we received the whole bunch of novelties that AP was about to launch at the SIHH 2018 (and there was a lot), one watch set apart from the rest. Weird enough, this watch is far from being a true revolution. Not that the RD#2 isn’t a stunning development, but we were all, at the MONOCHROME redaction, focussed on this new Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin 15202IP. Already stunning on the official images, we needed to see it in the metal. And boy, what a beauty it is.
