The middle-market luxury watch brands owned by the Swatch Group such as Hamilton, Tissot, Longines, Mido, and Certina are delivering some of the best values in mechanical watches today, and oddly, few people who like watches are noticing. After collaborating on the design of the “Duo-Face” watch from the Rpaige Watch Co., Richard Paige challenged Duo-Face case designer Mark Carson to come up with an unexpected watch design. The result was the art deco “Crash of ’29” watch. Now Mark and Richard are back again with the same great art deco case and hands but with a Swiss movement and a new art deco dial. The result is “The Skyscraper” watch by Rpaige.

Jaeger-LeCoultre brand fans will no doubt enjoy the news that the Memovox collection is back – starting with this brand boutique-only Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Memovox Boutique Edition limited set of watches. The Swiss brand claims that this refreshed retro-style release of the brand’s cult favorite alarm watches is due to the Memovox’s 60th anniversary, having been debuted in or around 1956.

Vintage, throwback, heritage. These are all words that we have thrown at us regularly, and it can mean a variety of things. Most of it is simply marketing fluff, used to denote a particular look or design that may have no actual ties to history, and is simple make to look old (such as a forced patina on a case or vintage – aka browned – lume). Then again, you do have brands coming to the table that really do have some real history under their belts, and can reference something from their own past rather than making up stuff.
