Value Proposition – The Mido Multifort Patrimony Collection (Review)

Mido is a brand that sometimes flies under the radar, at least here in the United States. Brands like Hamilton, Tissot and Longines seem to garner more attention in the USD 1,000 race, but Mido has both a storied history and portfolio that shouldn’t be overlooked. The brand’s Multifort line has been in production since […]

MY WEEK WITH: The Bremont U-2/51-JET, by Gold Logie nominee Rodger Corser

Rodger Corser looks familiar, right? That’s because he’s one of Australia’s most enduring and endearing actors. You’ll find him fighting zombies in Glitch, chasing gangsters in Underbelly and stitching up wounds in Doctor Doctor. In the new season of the popular show, you may note a certain black and stealthy companion on his wrist: The Bremont U-2/51-JET. It complements a (pleasingly intergenerational) collection that we’ve explored previously in part in these videos. Rodger’s new fascination is UK-based brand Bremont. The fit is obvious. The brand has acting pedigree, with Bremont gracing the wrist of Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Matthew McConaughey and more. It has authenticity, with a quarter of sales going to the armed forces, who demand a superior level of reliability. And it has an honesty via a rugged build and masculine aesthetic that appeals to the Aussie sensibility. We asked Rodger to review the U-2/51-JET over an eventful week in his life — the one in which he was nominated for a Gold Logie, Australia’s answer to the Emmys. I first heard about Bremont when … I was spending far too many hours on sites like yours! I found their story interesting for a new watch brand. From what I can…

Tom makes a case for waiting lists with the story of his Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 – “I told the dealer what I wanted and he went, ha!”

In the first episode of a new Time+Tide video series called ‘Every Watch Tells A Story’ — in which we ask people to choose a watch in their collection with a memorable backstory — Tom explains how he came to be the proud owner of a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711, a watch that has had arguably more attention in the last few months than ever before in its colourful 42-year history. How can I rattle that fact off so easily? Because we are the same age. I could only dream of ageing as well. Without stealing Tom’s thunder, this is a familiar and, for many, frustrating tale. You are asked by one of your friendly watch dealers, ‘Which watch would you most desire?’ To be met with laughter these days is probably not uncommon. Though Tom’s final result may have many reconsidering their long game, and gritting their teeth, though the months and years may seem to stretch away. If you actually make it onto a list, that is. If you want to get in on the fun, just tag your watch and story at #everywatchtellsastory and we’ll see it. I gently tapped the man on the shoulder and said, ‘Listen, sorry mate,…

Old is the new black, 8 of the best heritage watches of 2018

Omega Seamaster 1948 Small SecondsWhile orange might be the new black, another obvious trend in the contemporary watch market is the lean towards heritage styling. This has been a consistent motif across the industry for a number of years now, but 2018 was a year when the number of heritage watches almost eclipsed those with more contemporary design. In the spirit of people loving old stuff better than new stuff, I wanted to shine the spotlight on a few pieces that are some of the best heritage watches of 2018.   HAMILTON KHAKI FIELD MECHANICAL Sometimes we come across watches that present such a good value proposition, it’s almost a no-brainer. The Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical is one of those watches. And it’s not just the price that makes it a real winner either, but rather what it gets you. A 38mm, manual-wound watch with an ultra-spartan dial, the right proportions, all wrapped up in a historically relevant design that pays tribute to Hamilton’s rich military heritage. You can have our money, Hamilton. Ref No. H69429931, Case size 38mm, Case material Steel, Movement ETA 2801-2, Price $475 USD   TISSOT HERITAGE PETITE SECONDE Every year Tissot nail it with their heritage-inspired releases. The plaudits…

6 of the best women’s watches of 2018

Cartier-Panther-Revelation-3Half a decade ago, Time+Tide published a story, citing that by 2020 there would be more female millionaires in Britain than male, leaving it to the brands to respond to this shift. As we also mentioned here, women’s watches are so often an afterthought from brands, typically taking a men’s model and either shrinking it down or sinking a few stones into the bezel/lugs. While this still occurs, there are a number of brands that are working hard to have an independent women’s collection under their roof, which is refreshing to see. Last year, Baselworld had a number of women’s watches on display, so we thought we’d look back at 6 of the best women’s watches of 2018. CARTIER RÉVÉLATION D’UNE PANTHÈRE As with some of life’s great wonders, only when you see can you believe. And this latest marvel from the French Maison is the perfect example. With a simple turn of the wrist, what was once a blank dial begins to fill with tiny gold beads, flowing from top to bottom and revealing a stylised panther’s face. And then almost as quickly, it disappears, the beads resting at the bottom of the dial. Ref No. HPI01259, Case size 37mm,…
