Hands-on – The new TAG Heuer Carrera Senna Editions (Heuer 02 and Heuer 02T)

Brand ambassadors aren’t new. 30 years ago, TAG Heuer already had several of them, as part of the brand’s marketing strategy. One was, however, more important than others: a true idol named Ayrton Senna. He is the one that made TAG Heuer cool again, back in the 1980s and 1990s, by wearing an admittedly not-so-discreet, Steel-and-Gold, Analogue-Digital TAG Heuer S/el. But at that time, it was the watch to have for F1 fans. Times have changed, Senna is long gone and designs of watches too (for better more than for worse) but TAG still relies on Ayrton’s aura to create F1-oriented timepieces – and the recently introduced Carrera Senna Editions with Heuer 02 and Heuer 02T Tourbillon movements still retain the cool-factor of “Magic Senna”.

Introducing – Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Bucherer Blue Edition

Customized, special editions sold only through a single (branch of) boutiques is a common thing, but few do it as regularly as Bucherer. The Swiss watch retail-house has introduced several striking collaborations – no less than 25 in total with 14 different brands. To name just a few, the Tudor Black Bay Bronze, the IWC  Portugieser Chronograph Classic or the H. Moser & Cie Venturer Small Second for instance. All received the “Bucherer Blue” make-over and next in line is the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Bucherer Blue Edition.

INTRODUCING: Made for adventuring over and under seas – the Grand Seiko Sport Collection Spring Drive GMT Limited Edition SBGE245

There are certain (and few) movements in watchmaking that truly define a brand. Seiko’s Spring Drive is one of them. Unveiled by the Japanese manufacturer in 1999, it was four years later – after the inclusion of an improved automatic winding system and longer power-reserve – that the smooth sweeping calibre was adopted into the higher-end Grand Seiko catalogue, laying the foundation for the GS brand that we know and love today. Two years later, they paired the precision of Spring Drive with the functionality of a second hour hand, adding a GMT and dubbing it the 9R66. The exact calibre inside this latest addition to the Grand Seiko Sport Collection, a limited-edition version of the ever-popular SBGE201, the Spring Drive GMT SBGE245. Made not just for travelling overseas but on seas as well, the 44mm wide by 14.7mm thick stainless-steel case is water-resistant to 200 metres. And built tough, with its crown safely set into its case at 4 o’clock – minimising knocks and damage – as well as an enhanced shock resistance, and that very special Spring Drive movement that’s also been adjusted to withstand a greater range of changes in temperature. As with regular versions of the…

EDITOR’S PICK: 5 fast and furious car and watch pairings with investment potential

Editor’s note: The worlds of watches and cars have long been intertwined. Sharing countless similarities in their design and engineering, not to mention many and varied brand partnerships. It’s a match made in mechanical heaven. Here, Felix and Time+Tide friend, Ben, take us through five car and watch pairings with money-making potential. Whenever long-term friend (and sometime contributor) to T+T Ben Zachariah drops into the office, talk quickly turns to the fact that in every car guy there’s a watch guy waiting to get out (and vice versa). Because although Ben is very much into the horological, he’s even more into the automotive; unsurprising, given that he’s the man behind car investment firm Harris & Silverman. And with watch brands targeting their classic car tie-ins more aggressively than ever before — as well as a certain Daytona hitting the block — our chats about these two intersecting interests have taken more of a speculative edge. With the big names, like Porsche and Rolex, already commanding hefty premiums, we started thinking about the ‘next big things’. So, we set a challenge: Ben would come up with five cars, from the ’70s to today, that he believes have solid investment potential, and I’d come…

HOW TO: Wear a watch like no one is watching, with guess who as our hero

All of this bling-mastery has had us wondering, how can we be like the boss? We have some suggestions. Here’s how to Be a massive legend. Music star in his teens, movie star for decades, infamous Calvin Klein underwear model, build like the side of a truck and all-round baller. Create a TV show about your life, call it “Entourage” and the feature yourself in it.. Have a slightly controversial past that keeps things interesting. He may have found God and be all about his 4 children, but it wasn’t always the case for Marky Mark. Developing a cocaine addiction by age 13 and having an attempted murder charge against his name by age 16 (and no less that two further assault charges by age 21 that ultimately led in a short stay behind bars..), he really knows how to keep things lively. Create the ultimate soft-core workout video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alIRpRS28wY Be wealthy. Uber-wealthy. Marky Mark’s net worth is a reported $225M, having commanded up to $17M per film as of 2017. Wear what you will, Mr. Wahlberg, Sir.
