Hands-on – The H. Moser & Cie. Venturer Small Seconds XL Purity – Red Gold and Contemporary Rhodium-Plated Fumé Dial

Independent watch brand H. Moser & Cie. had another strong showing at Baselworld this year, introducing several stunning new models. We already wrote about the new Endeavour Perpetual Calendar Purity Cosmic Green (read that article here) and now today we’re getting hands-on with the simply sublime Venturer Small Seconds XL Purity. For the first time, 5N red gold makes its debut in the Venturer XL collection, creating a delightfully warm sense of contrast with the brand’s trademark fumé dials. Available in two different dial colours, this was definitely a sleeper hit from the brand for us.

HANDS-ON: Titanium case and a new style dial – the Breguet Marine 5517

Last year, Breguet gave us a first taste of their new design for the Marine collection. However, the new look didn’t get the massive attention you might expect for an update of a pillar collection. Not because it wasn’t noteworthy but because the new look was revealed in the form of the Marine Équation Marchante 5887 – and when you get a complication as mouth-watering as that, the aesthetics tend to play second fiddle. In contrast, the new Marine  5517, released at Baselworld 2018, places the emphasis firmly on the design. Vital Statistics Set in a 40mm case, the movement is Breguet’s self-winding in-house calibre 777A with a power reserve of 55 hours, a silicon balance spring and skeletonised winding rotor. As well as this white gold-blue dial version, the Breguet Marine 5517 comes in red gold with a silvery white dial, and in titanium – the latter with a sun-brushed dial, rather than the guilloché wave pattern of the gold models. The dial of each watch is individually numbered, below the Breguet logo. The hour chapter is marked out by applied Roman numerals, with luminescent dots for the minutes and a date window at 3 o’clock. There’s also lume…

VIDEO: Disassembling a Hublot Unico GMT to see how it works

When it comes to GMTs, you’d be hard pressed to find one as user friendly and as easily operable as the Hublot  Unico GMT. As part of our mini-series, exploring some unique Hublot takes on complications, we asked the Head of the High Complication department Emmanuel Missillier how it works? The answer involves some intricate wiring, replacing one chronograph module with a GMT plate and a day / night indicator that makes this one of the most legible and simple-to-read examples of the complication on the market.

NEWS: The results from Russell Crowe’s auction, including a surprisingly expensive Speedmaster

Last night, the provocatively titled Russell Crowe: The Art of Divorce auction took place in Sydney, an event which was, essentially, a rather high-brow garage sale. Unsurprisingly, it was the lots relating to his Oscar-winning role in Gladiator that saw the strong returns, a breastplate netting $152,500, an aluminium sword $85,400, and a a chariot $79,300 (all including buyer’s premium). The 19th century Leandro Bisiach violin played in Master and Commander, the lot with the highest estimate ($110,000 – $140,000) also performed well, coming in at $164,700 including premium. His art collection, including big-ticket Australian artist like Norman Lindsay, Brett Whiteley, Arthur Boyd  and Charles Blackman, also performed well. But how about the watches? Broadly speaking, the watch lots, which came right at the end of the auction, performed solidly, exceeding high estimates. The lower priced lots performed well, perhaps because bidders saw these lots as an attainable way to get a piece of memorabilia. In particular, Lots 204, a smaller, stainless steel Tiffany & Co quartz watch, exceeded its $1200 high estimate, realising $4636, and a pretty, but unremarkable 34mm Longines hit $6710, far more than its $1000 high estimate. The Master and Commander Yacht-Master did well, realising $24,400,…

Buying Guide – The Best GMT/Traveller’s Watches Introduced at Baselworld 2018

GMT Watches… How not to look at this specific category when the star of the show this year, at Baselworld 2018, featured such a complication. You name it: the Rolex GMT Pepsi Steel. Yet, that was not the only Traveller’s watch to be introduced during the fair. In fact, we’ve seen some pretty interesting new offers. Here are 7 very different watches, from an elegant Patek to an ultra-robust Oris, but all with the same purpose: displaying multiple time-zones.

EDITOR’S PICK: Russell Crowe’s watch auction, and 3 lots to look out for

As we told you a little while ago, Rusty is auctioning off a whole lot of his personal possessions, memorabilia and, of interest to us, watches. If this is news to you, here’s a recap. It’s all going down in Sydney tonight, and our eyes are going to be firmly fixed on three key lots. Lot 198 – Panerai Luminor Submersible PAM 64C This lot has a lot (sorry) going for it. The La Bomba is one of the real Panerai classics, and has everything in it that the Paneristi love. Plus this one is showing some lovely age on the lume. So even aside from the Rusty connection this is an attractive offering. Estimate $6000 – 9000. Lot 203 – Rolex Yacht-Master On the other hand, this Rolex is all about the movie connection. You have to love the fact that Crowe bought a Yacht-Master to celebrate his 2003 sailing epic Master and Commander, and got it engraved. Extra props for the fact that he never took the Rolex caseback sticker off. That’s the mark of a real watch guy right there. Estimate $10,000 – 15,000. Lot 206 – Cartier Tank Américaine chronograph Another interesting option. Cartier, along with…

LIST: The celebrity factor – 8 examples of the impact of provenance on price, from Newman to Trump

The power of ‘celebrity’ is not a new concept. As far back as the ancient pharaohs, celebrities have been put on a pedestal (sometimes literally) and we’ve obsessed into the lives of the powerful, the wealthy and the beautiful. These days, technology puts the beautiful people at our fingertips, and this all-access, always-on, microscope into famous lives continues to fuel the celebrity fire. And that desire for fame through association is at its strongest when it comes to celebrity-owned objects. Tonight, Russell Crowe will auction off a collection of movie memorabilia, jewellery and watches at Sotheby’s in Sydney as part of his ‘Art of Divorce’ garage sale (2001 Mercedes Benz, anyone?). Watches on offer range from an Armani quartz watch (estimate $500-$1000) to a late ’90s yellow gold Rolex Daytona – at well over $40,000. It will be interesting to see how Rusty’s celebrity impacts the sale of his 29 timepieces. In light of this auction, we thought it would be fitting to look at other famous watches that have gone under the hammer, just to see how much of a difference a famous provenance makes. Note, prices are all estimates based on available RRPs at the time of manufacture.…
