Photo Report: An Evening With Baume & Mercier In New York City

Over the last few years, A. Lange & Söhne has been making its popular 1815 collection more of a focus, introducing several exceptional models, like the insane Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Merite unveiled at SIHH 2017. While that model may have stolen the spotlight (and with good reason), today we’re giving some much needed hands-on attention to another great watch presented by the brand at the show; the A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Annual Calendar, which is the brand’s most accessible “complication watch”.
A faithful homage to one of the most legendary watches of all time.
Earlier this year, prior to Baselworld 2017, Oris introduced a facelifted version of its most emblematic watch, the Aquis. More refined, better executed, more modern but still perfectly suitable as a professional dive watch… It seems that tool-watch lovers praised this new design. The entire Aquis collection is now going through this facelift process, to create a consistent line up. Today, the Oris Aquis Small Second Date, a watch that not only offers a different display but also a larger size and an increased water resistance, is introduced in its 2017 version.
This month really flew by, which, going by the past six months, is the new standard. It started with a quick visit from Nick Kavvalos (@Nikokav) who was down from Sydney for ‘work’ with his Omega Planet Ocean. A couple of local watch collectors and I took him out for coffee and some car shopping. Nick is still revelling in his most recent purchase, an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver. Later in the month, I snuck along to a meet-up with the RedBar Crew Melbourne Chapter, which is headed up by Ernie Tang, a regular fixture on Time+Tide and the local scene. Like their fellow international chapters, RedBar is held at a secret location (for obvious reasons), tucked away in one of Melbourne’s many laneways. Here are some of the spotting highlights of the night. The first piece that caught my eye as I walked in was an IWC Big Pilot Heritage 48 on the wrist of member Yumie (@Yumie88). It was great to see the ladies well represented on the night, and Yumie was out in force, with a 48mm Big Pilot no less. It turns out Yumie has quite the collection, something we’ll be sure to cover in…

When smartwatches burst onto wrists in a big way with the Apple Watch and its Android powered competitors, the response from the Swiss hegemony lacked a single clear message. Some brands spurned the very concept of a luxury smartwatch, while others wholeheartedly embraced this new frontier. A few years on and the landscape has changed, with the large luxury groups seeing potential in this relatively new market segment. At the Richemont group, the smart push is spearheaded by Montblanc and their traditionally styled Summit watch. Funnily enough, it’s the fact that the brand has gone to great efforts to make the Montblanc Summit look as much like a traditional watch as possible that makes it stand out from the other more avant-garde offerings. The Summit is well-suited to be a device cohesively integrated into your life — and not be relegated to the role of a glorified fitness tracker. Prices for the Summit start at $1330 AUD.

Changes of positions have a negative influence on the way watches keep time. In 1801, Breguet patented a mechanism to negate the effects of earth attraction. A mobile carriage rotating at slow speed which houses the regulating organ of the watch, with the aim to average out positional errors. If the tourbillon has become more and more common in recent years, it remains an achievement for most watchmakers and the opportunity to demonstrate their skill and creativity.
All this week we’ve been asking people what Panerai means to them, and we couldn’t think of a better way of wrapping it up than hearing from Panerai collector – and a man with an eye for fine design – Michael S. Michael, or Mickey to most, manages to sum up just what makes Panerai great in under a minute. The key features that Panerai initially developed were with naval warfare in mind. They resulted in a watch that is (paradoxically) both under the radar and instantly recognisable. Far from being a trend-driven brand, it’s the fact that the watches have remained so true to this original, entirely functional design that makes Panerai special.

If you happen to read these lines, it certainly means that you have a sheer passion for all things related to watches – and so do we. Yet, as passionate as we are by the watchmaking world, some of us here share love for something else, yet mechanical too: cars. Thus, when I received an invite from Montblanc to spend a weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (Montblanc is, since this year, the official timekeeper of the event), you can imagine that I didn’t have to think about it twice. The Goodwood FoS is massive, unique, loud and fun. Here is a photo report of the 2017 edition of the FoS – and no worries, there are watches too…
I imagine there’d be some decent perks that would go along with being a bud of The Weeknd. You’d probably get to meet Daft Punk. You probably wouldn’t get to meet Justin Bieber. And maybe he’d pick you up to go bowling in a sweet ride with a panther in his passenger seat. Pretty great perks. But the real value of working with, and befriending Abel Makkonen Tesfaye seems to kick in around birthday time. Just ask French Montana, who received an iced out Patek Philippe Nautilus in November last year from The Weeknd, successfully present-shaming the whole world in the process. Now, it seems the birthday-watch is making its way into the pair’s music, with new French Montana song feat. The Weeknd ‘A Lie’ starring both French’s new Nautilus and a rose gold model on leather on The Weeknd. The song drops lines like “A hundred thousand for the time” and “House on my neck / ‘Nother house on my wristband”. As well as this one, which I’m sure we can all relate to: “My life’s invested in bein’ a f*cking legend.” The moral of the story is, even though it’s Saturday, we all need to get closer to The Weeknd.
