EVENT: Rado rallies behind young Australian design talent at the Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards 2017
Co-presented by Belle magazine and Coco Republic, the leading name in furniture, property styling and interior design services, last week’s Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards brought together Australia’s best interior designers to celebrate the spectrum of their creativity working across residential, commercial and hospitality projects over the past year. The seventh industry awards night featured two new categories: the Rado Emerging Design Star and Best Work With Colour. The winner of the Rado Emerging Design Star award at the Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards 2017 was Yasmine Ghoniem (Amber Road Design, Sydney), who said of her accolade, “The talent [tonight] was absolutely immense, which makes our Emerging Design Star win even sweeter.” Rado has long championed rising design talent, so it was great to see the watch brand’s support of Australian design circles. The brand has a longstanding involvement with design events and the promotion of inventiveness through the Rado Star Prize France, Italy, US and Switzerland, which showcases the work of fledgling designers. Yasmine was also nominated in the category Best Work with Colour and was definitely one of the most vibrantly attired at the event. Green is her favourite colour but among her prizes was a chic Rado True Open…

Andre Agassi’s response to the question, “Are you into watches?” didn’t exactly go to script. “Not at all. I have no interest in them,” he said. It’s not the first time we’ve spoken at length to someone who doesn’t identify as a ‘watch person’ per se. Mark Bouris is one, Mark Richards another. But this really was a first. An interview subject, at the start of a 30-minute interview, declaring our whole subject area a dead zone. Ok then? There was a five second pause, and I let it be because he looked like he was going to continue talking. “But I’ve come to appreciate what watches mean to people…” He was off. Andre ended up landing on one of the most elegant, eloquent descriptions of why people like watches that I’ve ever heard. And, spoiler alert, he does actually have pretty deep feelings for a watch in his own collection. Typical Andre, really. When you ask about any topic, you’d better be ready to go deep, because it’s a place where he – after a few minutes of feeling you out – seems to feel most comfortable. Abandoning certain conventions of conversation to answer as honestly, as unflinchingly as…
TAG Heuer is not a brand to waste an occasion, and with Chris Hemsworth, his mate Matt Damon and a cast of VIPs all staying in a super-yacht in Port Hercules on the eve of the 2017 Monaco Grand Prix, there was always going to be a watch announcement. But this one was particularly poignant. It was, in fact, 30 years ago that Ayrton Senna won his first Monaco Grand Prix. The three new Senna commemorative watches – two Formula 1 models, one time-only, one a chronograph as well as a Carrera Heuer 01 – are bold and sporty with high-contrast red, black and white colour schemes. The hulking Heuer 01 with the Link style bracelet is the real standout, it combines design codes from two recognisable TAG Heuer collections, resulting in a brutal Doctor Moreau like hybrid. And when we say it’s heavy, you’d better believe it. The links are solid. This watch weighs a ton. TAG Heuer Senna 2017 Special Editions Australian pricing Carrera Heuer 01 Senna Edition $7950, Formula 1 Chronograph Senna Edition $2100, Formula 1 Senna Edition $1850
Meet all-round dude and the man who’s looked after the most expensive Tudor ever sold, Justin Sebesta. NAME: Justin Sebesta OCCUPATION: Horologist (watchmaker) at HQ Milton HANDLE: @Sebs415 FOLLOWERS: 2,853 LOCATION: San Francisco, California Tell us about yourself: My name is Justin and I’m 34 years old, living and working in San Francisco. I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona under the hot, hot sun and surrounded by the beautiful desert landscape. Spent a few years in Seattle, Washington before making San Francisco home. I enjoy being outdoors, working on cars, and of course watches. I am a horologist for HQ Milton. In short, I repair fine timepieces, vintage Rolex being the bulk of my work. I would say I’m now an expert in the repair and restoration of Rolex watches. I’ve been doing this for seven years now. I love working with my hands, solving problems and keeping active. How do you unwind? On the weekends, I enjoy hiking as much as I can – being out in nature is something I’ve done as a kid and even as an adult it helps me to recharge and get away from the city. I also have a ’69 BMW 1602 that I enjoy…
Editor’s Note: Picture 10 pristine new Rolex boxes stacked neatly in your cupboard or, more likely, your safe. For me, this is immediately challenging because this would mean a bigger safe. What would be a dream for many of us is a reality for one man, Mark Richards. We published his watch story as part of a bigger feature video about his life. You can watch that here. Mark is the most successful skipper in the gruelling Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race’s 71-year history, and his mighty waterborne steed, current race record holder Wild Oats XI, is the most successful yacht. But when we met, we didn’t just discuss tacking manoeuvres and strategy, we also talked about his watch, the Rolex Yacht-Master (ref 16622). The one he hasn’t taken off since he won it in 2005. The very same watch he won when Wild Oats XI took its first line honours in a Rolex Sydney Hobart yacht race. It proved to be the start of a decade-long winning streak that continues today. Before you hit play, let me quickly tell a behind-the-scenes story. Part of the shoot included us filming Mark’s watch on its own. This happened at the end of…
