FRIDAY WIND DOWN: 21st October, 2016 – the mixed bag edition

Freitag wind-downToday’s Wind Down is, much like this week, a bit all over the shop. Though Time+Tide has momentarily ceased its globetrotting antics, that doesn’t mean we’ve been laying idle, so stay tuned. But in a week packed with a bold blue Bell & Ross and the curvaceous Clé we managed to find some gems out there, including the coolest cactus-themed jewellery we’ve seen in a long time (and trust us, you see a lot browsing Etsy). So, pour yourself a tequila and say hola to the Friday Wind Down. What happened? A little while ago, Petrolicious main man Ted Gushue told us the tale behind his lovely GMT-Master. This week he took it a step further with a video produced by American dealer Crown & Caliber, showing off his whole collection (we completely agree with his take on the Seiko SKX009 btw). We also really like that Ted has mastered the ‘casually chilling out in a Porsche wearing a Sub’ look – something many strive for, but few master. And now for a complete change of course. We were hanging out on the Cartier website, making a quick beeline for the watches/men’s watches section when our attention was caught by…

HANDS-ON: Is the Bell & Ross BR 126 Aeronavale the best (and boldest) Vintage model yet?

bell-ross-126-aeronavale-5Bell & Ross has never been afraid of colour. And their bold, highly graphical square instrument watches are a natural canvas for creative experimentation. The brand’s more traditional round watches are a little bit of a different story – inherently more conservative; B&R tend to play things safer with their Vintage collection. Which is why the Aeronavale range is such a big old bolt from the blue – and boy, did the risk pay off. While the form of the Vintage BR 126 Aeronavale (and indeed the simpler BR 123) is the same as regular versions, the execution is simply stunning. Bell & Ross has managed to turned a 43mm steel chronograph, running off an ETA-based movement into a glittering jewel. Key to this transformation is the rich blue starburst dial, with radial brushing. The twin subdials contrast nicely, thanks to the fine circular engraving. Thanks to this ever-changing finish the watch already dances and plays in different lights, but when you add gold toned hands and applied hour markers you get a watch that doesn’t stop. It looks incredible on the wrist. In low lights it looks dark, almost reserved, but as soon as you a stray beam catches it at the…

The First Results From Christie’s Nautilus 40 Thematic Sale Roll In From Dubai

Christie’s is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Patek Philippe Nautilus in its own way, setting up a thematic sale of 40 rare Nautilus to be auctioned in four different cities. It’s a non-traditional way to do things, for sure, but it should prove very interesting. The first 10 watches were just sold at Christie’s Dubai, and all sold at or above their respective estimates. The leading Nautilus was an early steel reference 3700/1 with a Khanjar symbol on its dial, for which bidding finished just short of the $200,000 mark, making it the second most expensive watch of the larger 146-lot auction.

Found: Not One, But Two Early Roger W. Smith Watches For Sale Online

You very rarely see Roger W. Smith watches come up for sale online. If fact, we’ve only ever seen it happen once before. The watch in question? The very first Series 2 the Englishman ever made. Now, a second early Series 2 has appeared online, and once again its been secured by the folks from The Watch Xchange, a relatively young online platform with a focus on high and independent watchmaking (and with some good connections it seems). Oh, and they’re also selling one of the first Daniels Anniversary watches too. Both watches are fresh to market and come from separate consigners.

Watches and Formula 1 – Episode 3 – Mercedes AMG & IWC Schaffhausen

After a long hiatus over the summer, and the sometimes literal clash between Mercedes AMG F1 drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton reaches new levels race by race, it is time to look at the current leader of the pack for this third chapter in our Watches and Formula 1 series. Mercedes AMG F1 is the team that rose from the ashes of Brawn GP which in turn bailed out Honda Racing F1 Team. If you remember our first episode of this series, we covered the origin of motor racing, including the birth of Grand Prix racing and the start of Formula 1 in 1950. Coincidently, Mercedes played a major role in both of these! It just so happens that the German manufacturer teamed up with a Swiss Watchmaker from day one; IWC Schaffhausen!
