Recommended Reading: The New Podcast From ‘Serial’ And ‘This American Life’ Is About An Antique Clock Restorer (And A Murder)

Today’s a big day for podcast fans everywhere. Hit podcast Serial and public radio stalwart This American Life have teamed up to create S-Town, a brand new show about a man named John living in a small Alabama town. Sure, the murder mystery is the main hook, but John is also an antique clock restorer and the opening sequence of Chapter 1 is a description of how to fix an old clock. Judging by the show’s graphics, there’s going to be a lot more where that comes from too.

Introducing: The Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook

Rado isn’t a brand typically associated with dive watches, much less vintage-inspired ones. But amidst all the retro subaquatic goodness from the usual suspects that was on full display at Baselworld came this little sleeper, from a company known for its super slim ceramic dress watches no less. And, for me, it stole the show. This is the Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook.

Hands-On: The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Moon

Another year, another Reverso. In many ways, Jaeger-LeCoultre has fallen victim to the popularity of its swiveling watch, having to come out with new iterations every year to satisfy the hungry collectors. While the big JLC story this year was the watchmaker’s round watches with sector dials, there were still some nice updates in the Reverso range as well, including this absolute stunner.

VIDEO: 5 Hublot watches that bucked the trends at Baselworld 2017

The dust is settling on Baselworld 2017, and we’re finally able to step back from the excitement and drama to have a bit more of an objective look at the fair as a whole. And it appears that, overwhelmingly, brands have been playing it calm and cautious. Fewer complications than usual were presented, but smartly priced steel watches were the order of the day. It doesn’t look like Hublot got that memo. One of the brands at the heart of the LVMH watch empire had a big, unashamedly bold line up of releases that made for a refreshing change of pace. You might be able to tell by my tone of voice. I was (and still am) excited.  The headline release was the completely new, technical Techframe Ferrari, but they also had some pretty confident line extensions, like the King Gold Sang Bleu and Meca-10 models, as well as a bevy of outrageous new sapphire numbers. There is absolutely no doubt that these aren’t safe, conservative choices designed to appeal to as many wrists as possible. And I think that Hublot deserves some kudos for walking their own path.

Baselworld 2017 – The Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Skeleton Full Black (With a Cool Feature on the Back)

The Maurice Lacroix Masterpiece Skeleton is undoubtedly one of the most attractive pieces of the collection, alongside a few other pieces such as the Gravity, the Mysterious Seconds or the Pontos S Diver. Playing on the modern side of open-worked watches (not these rather old-fashioned skeleton watches full or arabesques and engravings), the Masterpiece Skeleton evolves this year by being full black-coated and revealing something actually useless but rather cool on the back side of the case…

MY WATCH STORY: Running into last year’s crush in Hall 1, Jared’s Breguet Type XXI 3817

There are watches you see that have an immediate impact, but then the feeling fades. You see the same watch some years later and you can remember thinking it was amazing, but sometimes the desire to own it is gone. The opposite happened when I spotted Jared’s Breguet Type XXI 3817, which was released at Baselworld last year. It remains one of the finest pilot’s chronographs available, and one of the best value in terms of materials, quality and finishing with pricing at $17,800. And that’s without mentioning its looks. My mancrush on this perfectly chiselled piece is more intense than ever. Time has only made its combination of rugged machismo and fine guilloched detail stand out even more off the wrist. Below my misty-eyed iPhone shots, you can find a much better quality selection we took last year. Thanks to Jared for letting me fawn all over it and try it on, yet again. Why did you choose this one? With my style I am more of a sporty person and I like to have a watch I can wear every day with every outfit. I also really like the vintage style of the strap. At the same time it keeps…

Breaking News: Phillips Just Revealed That It Will Auction What Might Become The Most Expensive Rolex Ever Sold: The ‘Bao Dai’ Rolex Reference 6062

Phillips announced its upcoming Geneva sale with big news: the presence of the elusive “Bao Dai” Rolex reference 6062 in its catalog. “Grail watch” is often thrown around, but in the case of this triple calendar Rolex the term feels completely fitting. Not only is a black dial with diamonds the rarest configuration for a 6062, but the imperial provenance of this piece further enhances its desirability. Since its sale to Bao Dai in 1954, it has only appeared at auction once, back in 2002, and it became the most expensive Rolex ever sold. It is on track to set a new record, with a low estimate above $1.5 million and a final bid expected near double that amount!

Hot on the heels of all the Baselworld releases is something a bit different that comes from an unexpected brand – Larsson & Jennings. You may be familiar with Larsson & Jennings, a British company, for its Swiss-made quartz watches, but the brand has some big news – it’s dropping the very first mechanical wristwatches in all three of its collections, the Lugano, Norse, and Saxon, all at once.
