Weekend Reading: That Time The Statue Of Liberty Almost Got Herself A Wristwatch

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most immediately recognizable symbols of the United States. A gift from France, Lady Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886 (almost 130 years ago to the day), and since then has been an enduring presence off the southern tip of Manhattan. She holds a torch over her head and clutches a tablet to her body, but did you know that in the 1920 she almost got a wristwatch? It’s true. And The Atlantic has the full story.

VIDEO: Who wore it best? Tissot Heritage 1936 v Bridgeport Lepine Mechanical pocket watch

tissot-wrist-or-pocketLast week Andrew and I took part in a somewhat unusual, and entirely self-imposed, challenge. Andrew, typically a wearer of more modern timepieces tried the 45mm Heritage 1936 on for size and I gave my wrists a break entirely to properly experience the Bridgeport pocket watch. We were both outside our comfort zones, full of thoughts, feelings and even emotions. Luckily Ash was on hand to capture our pre-work ruminations on video. Fair warning though, I get all philosophical, even going so far as to question the nature of time.

EDITOR’S PICK: FakeWatchBusta on how to buy your first baller watch

Drake-Rolex-YAcht-master-IIEditor’s Note: Last night over drinks a friend had a question. He considers he’s reached some sort of early milestone in his collecting. He has a good watch, a weekend watch, a vintage watch, even a dress watch. But now, with his career on the up and a bit of unexpected cash – that will otherwise go on the ponies at this time of year – what should he splash on for a baller watch? Something that pokes it head above utilitarian roots. A watch that doesn’t whisper “I’m doing alright”, but shouts it Wolf of Wall Street style. I didn’t even continue the conversation. I googled @fakewatchbusta, baller, time and tide. This is what I found…. OK, so you got your first big paycheque as an up-and-coming rapper and you want to buy your first serious watch to stunt on the ‘gram. I know it seems like an iced-out watch is all the rage in the rap game, but if you look at the big stars like Jay Z and Drake you’ll soon learn that keeping it FACTORY-made is the way to go. There’s a reason Jay Z raps the iconic line: “Those ain’t Rolex diamonds, what the f*ck you…

Introducing: The TAG Heuer Connected Watch Now In Solid Rose Gold (For $9,900)

In November 2015, TAG Heuer announced a dedicated smart watch dubbed “The Connected Watch.” The watch itself was nothing really ground-breaking, using existing Google and Intel technology, but in the case of what appeared to be a large TAG Heuer mechanical watch. I was on stage for the launch, and the difference between this TAG Heuer and say, oh, I dunno, the Apple Watch, is that the TAG Heuer featured the form factor of a traditional wristwatch. I think many were skeptical about the legs of such a product that was 46mm in diameter with a price of $1,500 using technology available elsewhere for far less – but it has seemingly worked. And what’s more, as of today, this watch is now available in solid rose gold. Price? $9,900.
