Girard-Perregaux Neo Bridges Watch Hands-On

At SIHH 2017, I enjoyed seeing the interesting new Girard-Perregaux Neo Bridges Automatic Titanium watch – that takes an aesthetic concept the brand began a few years ago and makes it just that much more accessibly priced (but still pretty read more…

SIHH 2017 Personal Perspectives: Vacheron Constantin – Heavy on High Complications

Vacheron Constantin‘s line-up at SIHH 2017, even more so than any of its peers like A. Lange & Söhne or Audemars Piguet, was stacked with high-end complicated timepieces, including its first ever grand sonnerie wristwatch. The brand’s chief executive is retiring later this year, and is certainly going out in a blaze of glory. The flagship complication was undoubtedly […]

#TBT Breitling 765 AOPA Chronograph – an Exercise in Stunning Simplicity

In today’s installment of #TBT, we’ll talk about what I think is, hands down, one of the most perfect chronographs ever created, the Breitling 765 AOPA. In case you’re in denial, have been reading elsewhere or are blinded by the fact that the brand’s current offerings are far different (read: much larger) than its historic […]

Quartz is the future of the Industry (But not in the way you think)

Given weak job prospects and rising GINI co-efficient, the Millennial Generation isn’t flush with cash. Studies show that millennials earn USD2000 less than their parents did in the 80s adjusted for inflation, netting on average USD31,000 to UDS35,000 per annum. Add to the fact the ubiquity of laptop, tablet and smartphone devices in…

HANDS-ON: The appeal of Hublot’s Big Bang Unico Magic Sapphire is crystal clear

Hublot-Big-Bang-Unico-Magic-Sapphire-sliderWhen Hublot released two takes on sapphire Big Bangs last year – the Unico Sapphire and the All Black version – we suspected that wouldn’t be the last we’d see of the clear case material. Lo and behold, our hunch has proved correct with the release of the Big Bang Unico Magic Sapphire. Compared to 2016’s white-on-white and jet black limited editions, the Magic Sapphire feels far less ghostly and much more tangible. This is largely down to the smart design. By using their ‘Black Magic’ visual style with its contrasting elements, such as the black strap and texture-heavy dial with red accents, Hublot has made the spectacular 45mm sapphire case shine. So while the specs of the Magic Sapphire are essentially the same as before, the result is a completely different watch, and one that really pops IRL. Significant wrist appeal is only part of the picture. One of the most impressive aspects of this watch is the fact Hublot can make it at volume. Though it’s a limited edition of 500, being able to produce so many cases from sapphire – a material that’s notoriously tricky to work with – is no mean feat, and one the brand is rightly…

TAG Heuer Introduces Manchester United Special Edition Chronographs

Now managed by Portuguese great Jose Mourinho, Manchester United appointed TAG Heuer official timekeeper last year, rekindling the relationship between the chief executive Jean-Claude Biver and the club. In his other job as chairman of Hublot, Biver dropped the brand’s sponsorship of the Old Trafford club in 2013 after the retirement of legendary coach Alex Ferguson. The […]

HOW TO: Get the watch you want on Valentine’s Day

Screen Shot 2017-02-08 at 10.00.34 pmHoping to unwrap a small box next Tuesday and hear yourself saying ‘Wow!’ with genuine delight and awe and exclamation marks? How did he/she know this was exactly the watch you wanted! Then follow our step-by-step guide to avoid the tears and inevitable relationship breakdown that will result from your significant other choosing the wrong present for your wrist. 1) Harness the power of Instagram Forget the eyes – Instagram is the real window to your soul, so make sure the right people are peering through it, noses pressed to the glass. Unless you’re weirdly devious, your partner will already be aware you’re obsessed with the ‘Gram, but now’s the time for a gentle reminder. First, ensure your recent posts feature enough shots of the watch you have your eye on to be unambiguous. You don’t want her merely thinking, “Oh look, he likes watches. I’ll get him a watch. This one from [insert chunky, gross, quartz monstrosity brand here] will do the trick.” Because it will not. For the next day or two, exclaim loudly every time you get a new like, before humbly insisting it’s not really your camerawork that deserves the praise, but the Tudor/Omega/JLC in the shot. Message still not getting through? Caption your next post, “Almost as beautiful…

Historical Perspectives: The Fascinating (And Totally Geeky) Story Of The Rolex Oyster Bracelet

Why writing on some random stainless steel bracelets that have been around for decades? Trust me, not only to celebrate their 70th Anniversary this year. I decided to do so because I truly believe that the Oyster bracelet and the associated endlinks played a significant role in the legend of Rolex, perhaps as much as the original waterproof case. The simple design of those bracelet blends perfectly with the utilitarian lines of the Submariner or the GMT Master. On the wrist, it wears great, and the deceptively simple clasp works flawlessly. However, it would be a mistake to call the modern Oyster bracelet as we know it today a single stroke of genius. Its creation was more a continuous process of incremental improvements; Rolex patiently made sure that the Oyster bracelet would keep on being the most functional around, with almost invisible touch-ups. As such, this part is highly revealing of Rolex culture, especially its obsession for the details that matter; to me it easily explains the cult status that vintage and modern Rolex eventually reached.
