Rare Bird: Lémania 5012 SAAF (South African Air Force)

Recently I bumped into a picture of a vintage watch that I had never seen before. It turned out to be a military watch by Lémania, issued to the South-African Air Force (SAAF) in the 1980’s and equipped with an iconic movement. Since it is not a watch you probably see very often, I tried […]

NEWS: Rolex to sponsor the Oscars – and what this means

Image: people.comRolex has announced it’s now the official sponsor of the 89th Academy Awards, to be broadcast live (US time) on Sunday, February 26, and around the globe. When it comes to sponsorship deals, Rolex doesn’t tend to mess around, so it makes sense that the Big Crown – already worn by some of the silver screens most celebrated icons, and with a long history of behind-the-scenes involvement in the industry – has partnered with Hollywood’s premier event. Given the brand is already so prominent on the red carpet (we see you Seacrest), what does Rolex’s attendance mean to those lucky enough to attend, and the rest of us watching at home? Well, here are three theories. The speeches will no longer run over time Forget the swelling orchestra, with Rolex running the show, those gushing acceptance speeches will be guaranteed to run within -2/+2 seconds of allotted length. Make it count people. The Mentor & Protégé Arts Initiative just became more important Since 2002 Rolex has actively been supporting up-and-comers in a variety of creative fields, including filmmaking. Mentors have included Martin Scorsese, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu and, for 2016, Alfonso Cuarón. This latest high-profile commitment to film should indicate that the program is…

LIST: 7 of the toughest watches – the new breed

bremont-mbii-whiteBack in days of yore (AKA 2015), we rounded up nine of the biggest, baddest, most unbreakable timepieces we could find, and created the most fierce gang of watches the world had ever seen. Much like Dolph and JCVD, those guys are still the OG toughies, but in the subsequent years an entirely new generation of invincibles has risen through the ranks. So, without further ado, meet the new breed. Just don’t look them in the eye. Bremont MBII – White Most pilots watches haven’t been built to handle the stresses that come from being shot out of a moving fighter jet in 0.8 of a second. This one has. Bremont developed the MBII in partnership with ejector seat maker Martin-Baker, and last year added a white dialled version (perfect for Iceman). Cool as it is, it’s not quite a match for the MBI, which Bremont will only sell to people who have *actually* ejected from a plane using a Martin-Baker seat. Now that’s an exclusive club. Tudor Pelagos LHD The blue version of the mighty Pelagos made the last edition of this list, but we couldn’t resist including the latest addition to the family, as the LHD has a killer left hook. While…

Hublot Introduces Big Bang Unico Magic Sapphire

First introduced last year, the Hublot Big Bang in clear sapphire returns with a new and improved case construction that’s been simplified and streamlined. Recommended Reading: A Tudor Submariner Reference 7928 Issued To And Used By A U.S. Navy SEAL In Vietnam

One of the things that makes vintage watches potentially so much more interesting than comparable new watches, is that they so often come with a story. In this case, the watch in question is a Tudor Submariner reference 7928 that was issued to a U.S. Navy SEAL team member as a duty watch during his training in the notoriously brutal BUD/S training course (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEALS).

In-Depth: The Seiko Credor Eichi II, Maybe The Most Interesting Time-Only Watch On Planet Earth

For a company based in a country about which one of the prevailing stereotypes is collective uniformity of identity, Seiko is extremely diverse in what it creates – sometimes, and especially for newcomers to watches as a hobby, bewilderingly so. The watches made by Seiko run the gamut from simple, inexpensive quartz watches and the ever-popular Seiko 5, all the way up to what you see here: the Seiko Credor Eichi II, a hand-made, platinum wristwatch with a hand-decorated porcelain dial and a Spring Drive movement finished to within an inch of its life, made in extremely small numbers. This might just be the most interesting time-only watch on planet Earth.

Why I Bought It: A. Lange & Söhne Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon

When the hammer came down at the Phillips auction late 2016 and I had become the new owner of a A. Lange & Söhne Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon, the feeling was one of complete joy, representing the culmination of a multi-year chase. What makes this particular watch so special in so many ways?

IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph In Steel – The Cornerstone Of The 2017 Collection

As we’ve seen yesterday, the story behind the IWC Da Vinci has been eventful and longer than many thought. If the first edition dates back 1969, it’s really in 1985 that the Da Vinci obtained the recognition we know today, with one iconic version, the Ref. 3750 Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, conceived in the mind of genius Kurt Klaus. For 2017, there’s a new Da Vinci collection, which takes inspiration in that vintage model. And this might be the main reason why we heard many collectors praising one edition in particular, the one we believe to be the cornerstone of the 2017 range, the IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph in Steel.
