Throwback To The SIHH 2016 Highlights, While You’re Waiting For The SIHH 2017 Novelties

In less than 2 days, Monday 16th January, 9am (Central Europe Time), will be the official opening of the SIHH 2017, the annual High Mass for watches in Geneva. While we, at the Monochrome-Watches redaction, already have a glimpse of what is about to come (don’t even try to ask, we won’t tell), on this day you’ll be able to discover what the 17 large brands and 12 independent watchmakers exposing there have prepared for their new collections. We’re sure you, watch aficionado and collectors, can’t wait, but to make the suspense a bit less difficult, here is an overview of what the SIHH 2016 had best to show.

Introducing: The Greubel Forsey Signature 1 Now In Platinum – Is This The Ultimate Time-Only Watch?

It was this week last year that Greubel Forsey, makers of arguably the most high-end watches on planet earth, made their most low-end watch. But their most low-end watch turned out to be, in fact, the most high-end time-0nly watch in the world. It’s called the Signature 1, and this time-only was easily in my top three for SIHH 2016 because it took all of the gross over-engineering and attention to detail for which GF is known in its tourbillons and applied it to a relatively simple watch with just hours, minutes, and seconds.

Press Release: Omega Speedmaster automatic and Speedmaster 38mm

The new Omega Speedmaster Automatic. It’s essentially the same watch, but with a new dial, color theme design and a perforated strap. At first glance, the seconds track on the periphery of the dial looked very much like a checkerboard pattern on the race tracks. Although it is not the most pleasant visual stimuli, the design is still pretty…

Five Things I learned When Visiting Seiko in Japan

To most of us Switzerland is the centre of the world, when it comes to watches. The “Swiss Made” sub-title seems to be the best way for brands to make their watches more appealing, however that’s certainly debatable these days. Still, Switzerland is known for precision, fine mechanics and cleanness. Germany is also known for precision, cleanness and fine mechanics, and they also manufacture some very nice watches! Together with the Swiss, the Germans serve to an ever growing clientele who are interested in mechanical wrist watches. And that’s when you realise that there’s another country, on the other side of our globe, that is known for exactly the same qualifications: cleanness, precision and fine mechanics. I’m talking about Japan. Already in 1881 Kintaro Hattori started making watches, and today the company is led by his great grandson Shinji Hattori. Now that’s a proper family business! Recently I had the distinct pleasure of visiting several Seiko manufactures in Japan, and I remained awestruck. Later more about this trip, however we’re going to start with five things I learned about Seiko.

HANDS ON: Chanel vs Chanel – 2 Boy.Friends fight it out for a place in your heart

ChanelBoyfriend2Tune in to any period drama and at some point there’ll be a plot line where two eligible young bachelors vie for the attentions of a damsel; a situation which typically ends in fisticuffs, name-calling (“You blasted cad!”) and the woman not having a say in anything. Happily, our version of events – in which the original Chanel Boy.Friend is pitted against the new kid on the block, the Chanel Boy.Friend Tweed – takes place in far more enlightened times. Our lady of the manor gets to choose however she likes. One. Both. Neither. That’s the way it works, folks. And, with that lesson in healthy relationships crystal clear in everyone’s minds, let the battle commence. The original The Boy.Friend first showed up in mid-2015, offering a feminine twist on masculine style – something Coco famously loved to play with in her designs back in the day. Then there’s the octagonal shape of the case, which is another link to the brand’s heritage – a very sweet nod to the iconic art deco bottle that houses Chanel No.5. The original collection comes in three sizes, on a variety of materials and straps: steel, gold, satin, alligator – with and without…

Hands-On: The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Métropolitane Sélène

Let me introduce you to the Tonda Métropolitane Sélène. It’s an automatic ladies’ piece by Parmigiani Fleurier that was released almost a year ago. I was finally able to spend some time with this watch, and, try as I might, I can’t quite identify with it. Maybe I’m jaded, maybe I’m asking for too much, or maybe I’m just not sure of what I want in a watch. But what I do know is that this watch doesn’t speak to me the way so many others do. Now allow me to explain why.
