We have always said: there are huge analogies between the luxury car industry and the watchmaking industry whether we are talking about marketing, sponsorships, typology of collectors. In terms of products, we can also find similarities. It is extremely common for cars now to have their middle-life facelift, and this happens more and more in watches. Not entirely a new model, however slightly different from the previous version, the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Chronograph Perpetual Calendar goes through this process, with an improved movement (Calibre 1142QP) and a redesigned dial, becoming ref. 5000T.

The Vacheron Constantin Traditionelle Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is one of those quiet but excellent models that has long lived within the collection of Geneva’s oldest manufacture. The watch, which features a manually wound two register chronograph with perpetual calendar, is undoubtedly one of the most attractive and beautiful combinations of complications in the world – or, at least it is to me. While this watch appears similar to the existing references, this new model Reference 5000T-00P, features a new dial color and the latest version of the fantastic caliber 1142 QP, which is a subtly tweaked version of the previous 1141QP that has powered this model since inception. What does that mean? It means you can still buy a Lemania-powered perpetual calendar chronograph new – and that is a wonderful thing.
When learning about the new Vacheron Constantin Traditionelle Chronograph Perpetual Calendar, the first question on my mind was: “just how new is it, really?” In other words, after we saw the manufacture release a number of rather lust-worthy pieces in recent years, how excited will the world of watch enthusiasts and collectors get this time?

Many years ago, a young man wanted to start a watch blog, and, noticing that the naming conventions for watch magazines and websites mostly consisted of leaden wordplay or groan-inducing puns, he decided to pick a word that was as far from the English for “wristwatch” as possible. That man was Ben Clymer, and the word was “hodinky” – Czech for wristwatch. It started as a joke and now we’re stuck with the name, which was something I was reminded of when we got word from H. Moser & Cie that its Swiss Alp Watch – certainly one of the most attention-getting introductions of the 2016 SIHH and, among other things, both a parody of and a reproach to the Apple Watch – was going into regular production.
